If during pregnancy one consumes excessive amounts of pungent, hot, and toxic foods, heat accumulates within the fetus, causing fetal restlessness. The fetus moves its hands and feet chaotically, attacking upward to the Pericardium, causing great distress to the mother. It is appropriate to use Tiao Zhong He Qi Yin (Regulate the Middle and Harmonize Qi Decoction) or Sheng Hong Wan (Defeat Red Pill).
Tiao Zhong He Qi Yin (Regulate the Middle and Harmonize Qi Decoction):
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (each 1 qian); Bing Lang (Arecae Semen), Zhi Qiao (Aurantii Fructus, stir-fried with bran), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (each 8 fen); Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (6 fen); Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) (5 fen); Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) (3 fen).

Hong Hua Zi (Carthami Flos, ground and oil removed, 10 grains); Bai Cao Shuang (Soot from Chimney) (1 qian).
Grind into fine powder, make pills using rice paste, and swallow with Scallion Decoction.
If during pregnancy one consumes excessive amounts of cold and raw foods, combined with invasion of Wind-Cold pathogens lodging in the Stomach and Lung, phlegm-induced wheezing and tightness of breath occur, leading to restless sleep at night. It is appropriate to use Zi Su An Tai Yin (Perilla Fetus-Calming Decoction).
Zi Su An Tai Yin (Perilla Fetus-Calming Decoction):
Zi Su (Perillae Folium), Zhi Qiao (Aurantii Fructus, stir-fried with bran), Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus, heart removed), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 8 fen); Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (each 3 fen).

When a woman becomes pregnant, the Spleen's transport and transformation functions are hindered. If delayed, dampness generates; if dampness persists, heat generates; if heat generates, blood becomes prone to reckless movement; if blood moves recklessly, the fetus becomes unstable. This is like wind shaking a tree, causing a person to break its branches.
Fire possesses the natural principle of consuming things; therefore, causes of spontaneous abortion (Tai Duo) are often due to Deficiency or Heat. Treatment should focus on clearing heat and nourishing blood. For those with a history of habitual miscarriage (Ban Chan), Jin Kui Dang Gui San (Jin Gui Danggui Powder) is appropriate. For those with Spleen Deficiency accompanied by Blood Heat, Si Sheng San (Four Saints Powder) is appropriate. For those with Liver and Kidney Deficiency accompanied by Blood Heat, Liang Tai Yin (Cool the Fetus Decoction) is appropriate (formula see previous section "Heat-Induced Fetal Restlessness"). For those with Liver and Spleen Deficiency accompanied by Blood Heat, Gu Yin Jian (Solidify Yin Decoction) is appropriate (see previous section "Deficiency-Induced Fetal Restlessness"). For those with innate weakness, or during periods of epidemic heat, or after recovering from a heat-pathogen disease where the fetus remains unstable, Qin Shu Tang (Scutellaria and Atractylodes Decoction) is appropriate. (Huang Qin and Bai Zhu are considered sacred herbs for calming the fetus, specifically referring to cases of fetal instability due to Blood Heat).
Jin Kui Dang Gui San (Jin Gui Danggui Powder):
Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, honey-fried), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (each 1 liang).

Zi Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, honey-fried, 1.5 qian).
