Four or five days postpartum, sudden exposure to wind-cold leads to cold limbs (Jue), which is caused by the depletion of both Yang Qi and Yin Blood, compounded by the invasion of external Cold pathogen. Zhuan Jue An Chan Tang (Turn Jue and Secure Birth Decoction) is indicated.
Zhuan Jue An Chan Tang (Turn Jue and Secure Birth Decoction)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata)
Decoct in water and take orally.
Within five to seven days postpartum, forcing oneself out of bed causes damage to Blood and Qi, allowing Wind pathogen to invade due to deficiency. This may result from sexual indiscretion, emotional disturbances such as worry and anger disrupting the harmonious flow of Chong and Ren vessels, or consumption of raw and hard foods damaging the Zang-Fu organs. Initially, symptoms include dry eyes, trismus (lockjaw), and muscle spasms. If it progresses to stiffness and rigidity of the lumbar spine and tendons, it is incurable. This condition arises from patient negligence rather than accidental stroke (Zhong Feng). Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica) three qian, powdered, administered with wine or child's urine yields miraculous results.
Postpartum internal wind occurs due to excessive blood loss, leaving Qi without a master, resulting in cyanotic lips, cold limbs, sweating, vertigo, and coma, indicating imminent death. This is internal wind generated by extreme deficiency. Ji Wei Dan (Rescue Danger Pill) must be taken urgently. Administration of Wind-dispelling herbs will prove fatal.
Ji Wei Dan (Rescue Danger Pill)
Ru Xiang (Frankincense Resin, de-oiled and ground), Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopteri Dung, ground), Liu Huang (Sulfur, ground), Yuan Jing Shi (Natrii Sulfas, ground), E Jiao (Asini Corii Colla, stir-fried with clam powder into pearls), Juan Bai (Serpylli Herba, used raw), Sang Ji Sheng (Taxilli Caulis), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, white pith removed), all in equal proportions.
First, mix the powders of the first four ingredients in a stone or metal vessel, stir-fry lightly until not scorched, then grind extremely fine. Add the remaining herbal powders and mix uniformly. Form pills using juice of Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix). Take 20 pills per dose.
Postpartum cough may result from lochia attacking the Lung Meridian and causing pathogenic invasion; Er Mu San (Two Mother Powder) is indicated to resolve stasis. Cough induced by Wind pathogen accompanied by aversion to cold and fever requires Shen Su Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Drink) to disperse Cold. Cough due to Yin deficiency with hyperactive fire scorching Lung Metal requires Mai Wei Di Huang Tang (Lycium Fruit and Ophiopogon Rehmannia Decoction) to nourish the source of transformation.
