The Heart governs fright. In excess conditions, there is crying and shouting with fever, and convulsions when drinking water; in deficiency conditions, there is palpitations and restlessness. Heat in the Heart manifests as a preference for lying in cool places, warm breath during sleep, upward deviation of the eyes, shaking of the head, and grinding of teeth; these are all signs of Heart Heat, treated primarily with Daochi San (Ledger Decoction). A preference for lying on the back is treated with Xiexin Tang (Drain the Heart Decoction).
The Liver governs Wind. In excess conditions, there is straightening of the eyes, loud crying, yawning, neck stiffness, and sudden stuffiness; in deficiency conditions, there is teeth grinding and frequent yawning. Heat in the Liver manifests as picking at clothes and aimlessly fiddling with objects. If Wind affects the Liver, causing eyelid twitching without convulsions, it is treated with Xieqing Wan (Drain the Green Pill). If heat is severe, resulting in opisthotonos (body arching backward) and fixed gaze, indicating a struggle between Wind and Fire, Daochi San (Ledger Decoction) is used in conjunction.
The Spleen governs lethargy. Disease presents as drowsiness, diarrhea, and lack of appetite for milk or food. In excess conditions, there is excessive sleep, body heat, and thirst; in deficiency conditions, there is vomiting and diarrhea, treated primarily with Yihuang San (Benefit the Yellow Powder).
The Lung governs wheezing. In excess conditions, there is chest oppression, agitation, and rapid breathing; in deficiency conditions, there is sighing and long exhalation. Heat in the Lung manifests as pinching the eyebrows, eyes, nose, and face. If Lung Qi is abundant and complicated by Wind-Cold, there is chest fullness, shortness of breath, cough, and phlegm. One should first dissipate Lung Heat, then dissipate Wind-Cold. For excess heat in the Lung, Baixie San (Drain the White Powder) is used.
The Kidney governs deficiency and has no excess conditions. Deficiency arises from incomplete prenatal Qi, leading to insufficient Spirit. Manifestations include prominent whites of the eyes, open fontanelles, pale complexion, downward-gazing eyes with photophobia, hot feet, and aversion to being covered by clothing. This is due to deficiency of Kidney Water allowing Heart Fire to invade; Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) is indicated.
One must thoroughly understand miscellaneous diseases in infants, regardless of gender. Excessive sleep stems from Liver issues; night terrors and crying arise from accumulated Heat in the Heart. Crying with cold sweat is due to pain from parasites; alternating chills and fever indicate accumulation in the Spleen. Red face and mouth ulcers indicate Heat in the Heart and Lung; flaccid convulsions with drooping limbs indicate deficient Wind. Cold and slippery stools damaging the Spleen lead to frequent dysentery; stool resembling pus and blood without cessation indicates severe accumulation. Abdominal distension with visible fluid movement, wheezing, and yellow sallow complexion require medical attention. Heavy eyelids, salivation, and urgent head nodding warn against a slow and faint pulse. It is laughable that fools consult ghosts instead of seeking good medicine and skilled physicians.
Rearing children requires careful nursing and protection; do not be negligent. Excessive milk damages the Stomach; food stagnation injures the Spleen. Thick quilts are not beneficial; light clothing is appropriate. When there is no wind, expose the child frequently to sunlight; adapt to the changes of cold and heat according to the seasons.
