The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: "If food and drink intake doubles, the intestines and stomach will be injured." It also says: "Improper diet combined with fatigue and overwork injures the Spleen; when the Spleen is injured, the nine orifices internally become obstructed, muscles externally become congested, and Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) scatters and dissolves. This is called self-injury, leading to the depletion of Qi." It further states: "Ability to digest grain leads to prosperity; inability to digest grain leads to demise." The Spleen belongs to Yin Qi. Although it resides in a state of Yin stillness, it possesses Yang vigorous function, thus governing digestive commands. It is crucial to regulate diet to nourish the Spleen, allowing nourishment to permeate the interior and exterior, just as abundant Earth Qi causes all things to flourish. If one eats until overly full, various diseases arise. A tight and excess pulse at the Cun Kou (Inch Position) on the right hand indicates Food Injury; a deep and slow pulse at the Guan (Bar) position on the right indicates Spleen-Stomach Deficiency-Cold; a deep and slippery pulse at the Guan position indicates indigestion; a wiry and large pulse at both Guan positions indicates Spleen-Stomach fullness and distension.
