On the hard palate and tongue of a newborn, blisters appear resembling boils or shaped like reed tubes. Upon occurrence, immediately wrap a needle with cotton, leaving only the needle tip exposed to the size of a millet grain. Pierce the blister to drain yellowish-red bloody fluid, then wipe clean with light salt water; subsequently, grind Cinnabar (Zhusha) and Borax (Pengsha) (each 0.5 fen), along with Borneol (Bingpian) (a small amount) into a uniform powder, mix with honey, and apply to the affected area. Swallowing it is harmless. If it recurs, repeat the piercing method and application of topical medicine, and the condition will stabilize. Taking Liangge San (Cooling the Diaphragm Decoction) internally is even better.
The ear is the external manifestation of the Kidney. In infants, robust Kidney Qi causes heat to attack upward toward the ears, leading to stagnation of body fluids which transform into purulent discharge. It may also result from bathwater entering the ear, permeating the Qi and Blood to brew infection. If left untreated for a long time, it may develop into hearing impairment (Erzhong).
Main Formula: Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Manjingzi (Viticis Semen), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Decoct in water and take orally.
Ear Powder (Chuiyao): Mingfan (Alumen Usticum), Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi et Humeri), Huangdan (Lithargyrum) (1 qian), Ganyanzhi (Dry Carthami Flos) (1 qian), Shexiang (Moschus) (a small amount).
Grind these ingredients uniformly. First, insert a twisted cotton strip into the ear to absorb purulent discharge until dry, then blow the powder into the ear using a reed tube or goose feather quill.
Another Prescription: Mingfan (Alumen Usticum) (1 qian), Ganyanzhi (Dry Carthami Flos, specifically large red carthamus dried with powder absorption) (3 fen), Shexiang (Moschus) (a small amount). Grind uniformly and apply via blowing as described above.
For ulceration inside and outside the ear: Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Shechuangzi (Cnidii Fructus) (each 1 qian).
Grind into powder, add Qingfen (Calomelas) (2 fen), and grind uniformly. Blow internally into the ear; externally, mix with oil for application.
Heat-toxin acquired in utero or contracted after birth attacks the head and forehead, causing sores that lead to dry, itchy white scales or yellow exudate with ulceration.
Topical Application Formula: Qingxi (Bitumen) (1 liang), Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) powder, Chuanjiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) powder, Shuiyin (Hydrargyrum) (each 5 qian), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) (ground into paste), Baicaoshuang (Carbonis Herba) (each 3 qian).
First, add a small amount of bitumen. Grind Baicaoshuang, Xingren, and Hydrargyrum together until no mercury specks are visible. Then add the remaining herbs and more bitumen, grinding into a paste. Wash the area first with a decoction of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) and Zanthoxylum, or with rice washing water or strong tea. Shave the hair and apply the paste. Avoid stimulating foods (Faqi) and heat-toxin inducing substances.
