(Attachment: Yellow Swelling)
The Classics state: "Urine that is yellow and red, accompanied by a desire to lie down and rest, indicates Jaundice Disease." This is mostly caused by excessive intake of alcohol and food, leading to disharmony of the Zang-Fu organs. The water and grain essences mix together, affecting the Spleen and Stomach, and are further combated by Wind-Dampness pathogens. The resulting stasis and accumulation do not dissipate; heat qi stagnates and steams. Symptoms include feeling hungry shortly after eating, yellowing of the body, face, eyes, fingernails, and urine, along with a frequent desire to lie down. These constitute the manifestations of this disease. There are five types of Jaundice: Huang-Ju (Yellow Jaundice), Gu-Ju (Grain Jaundice), Jiu-Ju (Wine Jaundice), Nü-Lao-Ju (Female Labor Jaundice), and Huang-Han (Yellow Sweat). Although the pathogenic factors of Damp-Heat are similar, they all arise from Dampness generating Heat. The mutual fermentation of Dampness and Heat produces the yellow color. Patients commonly experience difficulty in urination and defecation. Treatment should specifically focus on promoting urination, which is the most expedient and essential method. Once urination becomes clear and abundant, the yellow color will naturally recede. In recent times, herbal medicines are frequently used because they are fresh, cool in flavor, potent in nature, and rapidly effective in promoting flow. For those with a floating pulse, emetic or diaphoretic methods should be used; for those with a deep pulse, purgative or draining methods should be used. If, after seven or eight days, there is a bloody taste in the mouth, purgative therapy is also appropriate.
Main Formula: Yinchen (Corydalis Rhizome, preferring those resembling bells) [1 qian], Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) [1 qian]; Chifuling (Red Poria), Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) [7 fen], Gancao Shao (Licorice Root Tip) [3 fen]. Add twenty stems of Dengxincao (Juncus Effusus), decoct in water, and take on an empty stomach.
If urination is obstructed, add juice of Cheqiancao (Plantaginis Herba) and administer with powder of Huashi (Talcum). For severe cases, add Tinglizi (Lepidii Semen), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), and Caolongdan (Gentiana Scabra).

Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) (See formula under "Middle Cold")
Jianzhong Tang (Establish the Middle Decoction) (See formula under "Cold Damage")
Both treat the syndrome of yellowing caused by internal injury and overwork.
Simple Prescription (Treats Huang-Dan): Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) 1 liang, divided into two doses. Decoct with good wine and take on an empty stomach.
Alternatively, Luobozzi (Brassicae Semen) powdered, taken with warm water, three times daily. Or burn Si Gua Lian Zi (Luffae Fructus cum Semen) to ash. If caused by facial disease, mix with flour soup; if caused by alcohol, mix with wine.
For Jaundice without sweating: Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) [2 qian]. Use less in Spring and Summer. (Decoct in water in Autumn; decoct in wine in Winter.) This also treats yellowing caused by Cold Damage.
For skin and eyes as yellow as gold: Crush Qing Xiaomai (Tritici Fructus Aestivus) or its seedlings to extract juice. Take one cup, warm, on an empty stomach.
Alternatively, decoct Yezhumagen (Boehmeriae Caulis et Folium Radix). Or decoct Gange (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) in wine, and take with ground Baixiudoukou (Cardamomi Rotundus). Or grind Tao Zhi (Persicae Ramulus) and Liu Zhi (Salicis Ramulus), and take with water.
Hei-Dan (Black Jaundice) often leads to death. Urgently crush Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix) to extract juice and take it.
For acute Heart Huang-Dan: Steam Baihe (Lilii Bulbus), mix with honey, and eat.
Alternatively, take one handful of Sheng Maogen (Imperatae Rhizoma), cut finely, and boil with pork meat to extract juice for drinking. Do not eat the meat.
Currently, herbs are used to treat Jaundice: Cheqiancao (Plantaginis Herba), Pingdimu (Ardisiae Japonicae Herba), Xueliqing (Chrysanthemi Indici Herba), Hebao Cao (unknown specific herb, likely local name), Xianren Duizu Cao (unknown specific herb, likely local name). Select any one, crush finely, mix with raw white liquor, squeeze out the juice, and drink.
