This is commonly known as "Huang Pang" (Yellow Puffiness). It originates from food stagnation, where dampness accumulates and damages the Spleen. The Spleen Qi becomes deficient and fails, manifesting as a yellow complexion and edema.
Main Formula: Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (each 2 liang), Nongpuo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, stir-fried with ginger juice), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (5 qian), Sharen (Amomi Fructus) (5 qian), Zaofan (Sideritis Ferri Sulfas) (2 liang, prepared as powder by stir-frying).
Grind the above herbs into fine powder. Except for Zaofan which is processed separately, take one sheng of red rice flour. First, stir-fry the Zaofan in a clay pot until the smoke ceases, then add the flour and stir-fry until fragrant and thoroughly cooked. Remove and mix with the previous powder. Boil with vinegar to form a paste, then shape into pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, twice daily, washed down with ginger decoction. Avoid wheat-based foods, raw/cold items, and greasy foods.
Another Prescription: Zaofan (Sideritis Ferri Sulfas) (5 liang), Zao Rou (Date Flesh) (3 liang), Gan Zhengbing (Steamed Biscuit) (3 liang).
Grind the above into powder. Use fresh ginger juice to bind them into small pills. Take 20 pills per dose, three times daily, washed down with rice gruel.
Tuijin Qipi Wan (Remove Gold and Inspire Spleen Pill): Treats Huangzhong (yellow swelling) accompanied by abdominal distension.
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Zhi Fan (Prepared Alum/Iron Sulfate) (each 4 liang), Yichen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, specifically Ling'er variety), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Nongpuo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) (each 3 liang), Ganqi (Kadsurae Longipedunculati Fructus, stir-fried until smoke ceases), Pengzhu (Curcumae Phaeocaulis Rhizoma), Sanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma) (each 2 liang), Chuanjiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 liang).
Grind the above into powder. Boil large black dates once, remove skin and pits, mash thoroughly, and mix with the powder to form pills. If too dry, add appropriate date water to adjust consistency. Shape into pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 50 pills per dose on an empty stomach, washed down with rice gruel or ginger-date decoction. Stop medication when the disease has resolved by seventy percent.
Method for Preparing Fan (Zhi Fan Fa): Lvfan (Green Vitriol/Iron(II) Sulfate Heptahydrate) (10 liang), Xiaomai (Tritici Vulgaris Semen) (1 sheng). Wash clean and sun-dry. Place in a pot with five to six bowls of good rice vinegar and boil until half-dry. Add the Lvfan and boil until dry. Stir-fry until yellow. Break open the wheat; if the interior is yellow, immediately remove from heat. Do not let it burn.
Zao Fan Wan (Date and Iron Sulfate Pill): Treats Shi Lao Dan (Food Consumption Jaundice), where the body and back are both yellow.
Zaofan (Sideritis Ferri Sulfas) (amount不拘/unrestricted, stir-fry in a clay pot until bright red, sprinkle with vinegar to turn reddish), Hongzao (Red Dates, boiled and flesh extracted). Mash together with the iron sulfate and shape into pills. Take 50 pills per dose, washed down with rice gruel or ginger decoction.
