The Yellow Emperor asked: What qi causes scrofula (Luo Li, cervical lymphadenitis) accompanied by aversion to cold and fever in the neck and axilla? Qibo replied: These are all caused by the toxic qi of mouse scrofula (Shu Luo) and cold-heat pathogens remaining in the meridians without dissipating.
The Yellow Emperor asked: How can they be removed? Qibo said: The root of mouse scrofula lies within the Zang organs, while its manifestations emerge upward between the neck and axilla. If the pathogen floats within the vessels and has not yet deeply attached to the muscles, but only forms pus and blood externally, it is easy to remove. "Luo Li" refers to continuous tubercles; those shaped long like clams are called "Ma Dao" (scrofulous abscesses on the side of the neck). These conditions invariably originate from the Shaoyang meridian. If taboos are not observed, the disease extends to the Yangming meridian. Generally, this originates from a deficiency of Qi and Blood, compounded by anger causing Qi rebellion, worry and thought causing stagnation, and wind-heat pathogenic factors internally assaulting the Liver. Rich flavors in food generate toxicity, wind, and heat, which fall into these three categories, inducing transformation and disease. One must distinguish between excess and deficiency patterns. Excess patterns are easier to treat, while deficiency patterns require simultaneous tonification. This is due to the flourishing of Minister Fire in the San Jiao (Triple Burner), characterized by abundant Qi and scarce Blood. Women suffering from this condition experience irregular menstruation and the generation of alternating chills and fever; if the condition lingers and transforms into tidal fever symptoms that gradually subside, it is commonly known as "Qie Disease" (consumptive disease/tuberculosis). It is suitable to apply garlic-separated moxibustion and administer Baidu San (Poison-Destroying Powder) for ten doses. If it does not resolve, administer the subsequent formula. One must strictly avoid anger, reduce desires, and eliminate rich and greasy foods to achieve a cure. For a floating and rapid pulse, clear heat and cool blood; for a deep and hidden pulse, disperse stagnation and move Qi. The Classic states: "When Fire excess prevails, treat with salty-cold methods." First, stir-fry one or two taels of salt until hot, add several bowls of running water, and drink frequently. Use a goose feather to induce vomiting in the throat, expelling two or three bowls of saliva. First, administer Wuxiang Lianqiao Yin (Five-Aromatic Forsythia Decoction) with Oyster Shell (Muli). For patients with solid constitutions, add Rhubarb (Dahuang) by several qian. If purgative action causes pain and heat, subsequently use resolving medications. Follow with blood-cooling and meridian-unblocking medicines, combined with Yuzhu San (Jade Candle Powder), Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) (see Gynecology section), Liangge San (Cool the Chest Powder), and Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxicity) (see Fire Section).
Main Formula: Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Licorice Root (Gancao, roasted), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), Sargassum (Haizao), Kelp (Kunbu) (each 5 qian); Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao), Bupleurum Tip (Chaihu Shao), Spiny Echinops Root (Sanleng), Gentian Root (Longdan Cao), Scutellaria Root (Tiao Qin, half raw/half wine-soaked), Curcuma Zedoary Rhizome (Pengzhu) (each 3 qian); Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), White Peony Root (Baishao), Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai, wine-fried), Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu, fried), Tianfen, Kudzu Root (Gegen) (each 3 qian); Cimicifuga Rhizome (Shengma), Angelica Sinensis Tail (Danggui Wei) (each 5 qian).
Crush the above herbs. Take one liang per dose, add two zhong of water, soak for half a day, decoct until one zhong remains, and strain. Lie down without a pillow, head resting on the mat, affected area facing downward, legs elevated high. Sip one mouthful while hot, swallowing in ten portions. The subsequent formulas are taken using the same method. Prepare another batch, water-pelletized to the size of mung beans. Retain a mouthful of the previous decoction, swallow the pill immediately, then lie quietly so the medicinal qi remains in the throat.

It can be relied upon for deficiency patterns; for excess patterns, it moves and disperses. Combined with moxibustion, it yields results. The herb grows about one chi high, with dense branches, purple flowers, and withers at the Summer Solstice.
