The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: Tumors and scrofula-like masses all belong to heat syndromes. This is primarily due to Qi stagnation transforming into fire, causing accumulation and obstruction that becomes hard and firm, resembling a fruit pit. It does not require ulceration or suppuration; once the Qi disperses, the condition resolves spontaneously.
When these masses occur in the neck, nape, arms, and hypochondrium, they are mostly located between the skin and the fascia. The flow of damp-phlegm and excessive injury from the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Sorrow, Fear, Fright) can both cause this ailment. Women often suffer from this because, regardless of wealth or poverty, there is much emotional depression. If one sleeps on an improper pillow while experiencing sorrow, distress, or anger, the condition forms. If masses in the neck do not dissipate, they transform into *luoli* (scrofula); if those in the axilla do not resolve, they become *madao* (a type of scrofula). Early treatment is essential. Since this disease accumulates over months and years, medication must be taken for a long duration. One must strictly avoid fresh pork and foods with hot-toxic properties.
Main Formula (for cervical and axillary masses): Juhong (Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae), Nanting (Arisaema Cum Bile), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Praeparatum with Ginger Juice), Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis), Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Qianhu (Radix Peucedani), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Pengzhu (Rhizoma Curcumae), Manjingzi (Fructus Viticis), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae). All ingredients are used in equal parts. Add five slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Rhizoma Zingiberis) and thirty stalks of Dengxincao (Papyrus Medulla). Decoct in water. When taking the medicine, lie down without a pillow with the affected area facing downward, slowly inhale the steam, and swallow the decoction carefully.
Sanjie Wan (Scrofula-Resolving Pill): Treats masses that have persisted for a long time without resolving. Also use the Wei Fang (Surrounding Formula) (see the Phlegm section).
Ingredients: Juhong (mixed with salt water), Chifuling (Poria with Hostwood), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei boiled with wine), Lianqiao (each 1 liang), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae stir-fried with wine), Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae stir-fried, each 8 qian), Banxiaqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata Bisce cum Herba), Jiegeng, Gualouren (Semen Trichosanthis), Muli (Concha Ostreae calcined and quenched with child’s urine), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), Tianfen (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae - note: likely refers to Tianhuafen/Trichosanthes Root here contextually, but literal is Angelica), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus washed, each 7 qian), Gancaojie (Node of Licorice Root, 4 qian).
Grind the above into powder, make pills using water as a binder, sized like radish seeds. Take 2 qian per dose, swallowing with plain warm water while lying down.
Gutan Wan (Phlegm-Rolling Pill) (Formula see Phlegm section): Take 5 fen per dose, swallowed with green onion and salt water before sleep. For long-term use, take 3 fen, mixed with honey and held in the mouth before sleep.
Simple Formula: Jiangcan (stir-fried), Dahuang (soaked in wine), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), Dansheng (Arisaema Cum Bile). Grind equal parts into powder, make pills with honey, and dissolve in the mouth.
Another Method: Use seven Sesamum indicum seeds (Bimazi, remove shell), grind them into a paste, roll in paper, insert into a chicken egg, seal with paper, soak in water until wet, and bake until cooked. Remove the paper shell and eat only the egg. Take one egg morning and evening; effectiveness appears within ten days. Alternatively, grind Shegan (Radix Belamcandae), mix with wine, and take orally; this is also effective.
