Within one hundred days after birth, if the infant feels cold in the mouth and abdominal pain, the body exhibits *cold shivers* (寒粟), and there are occasional tremors. The legs are flexed, fists are clenched, and the infant cries day and night. Alternatively, the jaw may be locked (*mouth clenching*), with drowsiness, difficulty suckling, and diarrhea. This is caused by the mother contracting cold-dampness, overconsumption of raw or cold foods, or ingestion of cooling medicines. If untreated, it may develop into *slow convulsion* (慢惊). Treatment is suitable with Danggui San (Angelica Decoction). For infant diarrhea, Shenling Baizhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) should be administered (formula see "Diarrhea").
Main Formula: Rougui (Cinnamon Bark), Muxiang (Aucklandia Root), Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), Paojiang (Prepared Ginger), Chuanxiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Gancao (Licorice Root) (equal parts). Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take 3 fen per dose, mix with breast milk, and apply to the inside of the infant's mouth. Administer twice daily.
After birth, the infant has thick muscles and the entire body is red as blood color. After one month, the muscles gradually emaciate, the sclera shows red veins, there is heat in the five centers (*five-palm heat*), difficulty in defecation, and frequent spitting of saliva. Treatment is suitable with the bathing method.
Bathing Formula: Tianma powder (1 qian), Quanxie (Whole Scorpion, two pieces, finely ground), Baijian (Alum), Chantui (Cicada Slough) (each 3 qian), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis, 2 qian), Shexiang (Musk, 2 fen, mixed evenly with Qingdai). Use three bowls of water and a handful of peach branches. Boil half of the above herbs for ten boils, then add Qingdai and Shexiang for bathing. Do not bathe the back.
After birth, the infant's face lacks luster, muscles are thin, stools are watery and white, the body lacks blood color, there is frequent choking breath and hiccups, and the spirit is dull. Treatment is suitable with the aforementioned bathing method. For diarrhea, administer Shenling Baizhu San (formula see "Diarrhea").
While in the womb, due to maternal fright palpitations or physical shock from bumps and falls, the fetus inherits the mother's qi disturbance. After birth, the spirit is unrefreshed, and the complexion is pale and deficient. Initially, there is mild fever; later, the cheeks become red and the infant is easily frightened. Slight movement causes fear, and loud noises cause palpitations. The area between the eyebrows (*Yintang*) appears cyanotic. During sleep, there are startles, convulsions of the hands and feet, stiffening of the body, and upward deviation of the eyes. This constitutes *Jingxian* (Fright Epilepsy).
Main Formula: Renshen (Ginseng), Nanxing (Arisaema Cum Bile), Niudan (Ox Gallstone, prepared), Tianma (Gastrodia Rhizome), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Baifuzi (Typhonii Rhizoma, processed) (each 1 liang), Zhusha (Cinnabar, water-triturated, 2 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 1.5 qian), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis, 1 qian), Shexiang (Musk, 5 fen). Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Make pills using refined honey, sized like Euryale Seed (*Qianshi*). Dissolve and administer with a decoction of Gouteng (Uncaria Ramulus cum Uncis) and Zaojiazi (Gleditsiae Fructus Spina).
Zhuru Gao (Pig Milk Ointment): Treats various syndromes of fetal fright and epilepsy.
Quanxie (Whole Scorpion, one piece, roasted and ground), Hupo (Amber, 1 fen), Zhusha (Cinnabar, 2 fen).
Grind the above ingredients into an extremely fine powder. Take 2 fen per dose, mix with a decoction of Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), and add pig milk for better efficacy.
