While in the womb, the infant is affected by the mother's heat-toxin. After birth, the whole body and face appear yellow, the stool is constipated, the urine is dark red, there is frequent crying, and refusal to suckle milk.
Main Formula (taken by both mother and infant): Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Chishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Chi Fuling (Poria cum Ligno), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Yichen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (equal parts). Decoct in water and take.
This condition often arises after cutting the umbilical cord, due to wind-dampness invading the navel. If wind enters the navel, it causes swelling of the navel and abdominal distension, mouth closure with frequent crying, and inability to drink milk. If the pathogen enters the meridians, it often transforms into epilepsy. If the area around the navel turns blue-black, and the mouth is tightly closed, it indicates internal convulsion. Blackening of the fingernails signifies a fatal prognosis. If heat accumulates in the chest and diaphragm, causing extension and flexion efforts and straining, it also leads to navel swelling. Treatment should utilize Qianjin Longdan Tang (see "Cuokou" section), Xixian San to induce vomiting for phlegm (see "Zhongfeng" section), or administer descending-phlegm medicines dissolved for ingestion.
Main Formula (treating Umbilical Wind): Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (equal parts). Grind into fine powder. Take 2 fen each time, mixed with Dengxin Cao (Junci Medullae Decoction). Alternatively, apply inside the infant's mouth.
Xuanfeng San: Treats post-umbilical-cutting conditions caused by external wind-dampness injury, presenting with cyanotic lips, refusal to suckle, rapid breathing, umbilical wind, and mouth closure. Quanxie (Scorpio) (21 pieces, complete heads and feet, washed, stir-fried with wine without ash, ground into powder); Shexiang (Moschus) (2 fen, separately ground and mixed evenly). Make into powder. Take 2 fen each time, taken with Yinjin Hua (Flos Lonicerae Japonicae Decoction) or Maidong Tang (Ophiopogonis Decoction).
The infant, while in the maternal womb, may have been exposed to wind-heat. After birth, if the blood and qi are not yet regulated, bathing and exposure to wind can cause the disease. Symptoms include foaming at the mouth and cold limbs throughout the body; this condition is invariably difficult to save. This syndrome is most critical. Although there are various manifestations, all stem from internally accumulated and stagnant heat. The heat harasses the intestines and stomach, causing blockage and obstruction, preventing qi transformation, leading to abdominal fullness and distension, visible green veins under the abdomen, mouth closure, and refusal to suckle. The symptoms are extremely urgent. If one does not quickly provide treatment to unblock qi and promote downward drainage, there is no hope for rescue; any delay will result in death.
Main Formula: Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) (straight ones, remove silk, stir-fry and grind, 1 qian); Shutui (Serpentis Ecdysis) (stir-fry and grind, 1 qian); Zhusha (Cinnabaris) (water-triturated, 5 fen); Shexiang (Moschus) (5 li). Mix evenly. Take 2 fen each time, mixed with honey.
Qianjin Longdan Tang: Treats Umbilical Wind and Mouth Closure (Fetal Convulsion). Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (wrapped in wet paper and baked, 1 qian); Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix); Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix); Longdancao (Gentianae Radix); Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (stir-fried); Chishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra); Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (roasted); Fuling (Poria) (each 8 fen). Grind into fine powder. Take 3 fen each time, taken with Heizao (Zizyphi Fructus Decoction); or mixed with Fangfeng Maidong Tang (Saposhnikoviae and Ophiopogonis Decoction).
Cuofeng San (Treating Mouth Closure): Wugong (Scolopendra) (dried, half a strip with red legs, roasted and ground); Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis) (5 fen); Shexiang (Moschus) (2 fen); Quanxie Shao (Scorpio tail tip) (washed, roasted, and ground); Zhusha (Cinnabaris) (water-triturated, each 1 qian). Grind into powder. Take 2 fen each time, taken down with Zhuli (Bambusa Textilis Sap).
