(Attachment: Rectal Prolapse)
The Classics state: "Due to overeating, the sinews and vessels become loose and relaxed, leading to intestinal dysentery which manifests as hemorrhoids." This is mostly caused by exertion after full meals, or indulgence in rich and strong-flavored foods; sexual activity while drunk and full, causing heat-toxin to accumulate; forcibly retaining semen or overusing astringent medicines, causing stale essence to stagnate and settle in the anus; anger stirring up Liver Fire, where Fire insults Dryness-Metal (Lung/Large Intestine), causing toxin to gather in the anus; or Damp-Heat in the Spleen and Stomach pressing downward into the Large Intestine. There are countless other causes, compounded by the Six Evils (Wind, Cold, Summer-heat, Dampness, Dryness, Fire) and Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Pensiveness, Sadness, Fear, Fright).
There are seven types of hemorrhoids: Flesh nodules at the anal margin with intermittent pus and blood discharge are called *Mu Zhi* (Male Hemorrhoid); anal sores swelling and protruding with bleeding appearance are called *Pin Zhi* (Female Hemorrhoid); continuous dripping of blood from sores, alternating pain and itching, are called *Mai Zhi* (Vein Hemorrhoid); swollen nodes prolapsing from the anus accompanied by alternating chills and fever are called *Chang Zhi* (Intestinal Hemorrhoid); resembling *Chang Feng* (Wind in the Intestines) with fresh blood intermittently discharged, are called *Xue Zhi* (Blood Hemorrhoid); formed due to excessive drinking, are called *Jiu Zhi* (Wine Hemorrhoid); triggered by worry and anger, are called *Qi Zhi* (Qi Hemorrhoid); chronic ulceration with prolonged discharge of pus, blood, and water, are called *Zhi Lou* (Hemorrhoidal Fistula). To treat these, one must abstain from sexual intercourse, avoid rich flavors, and control anger. A pulse that is deep, small, and solid indicates an easy cure; a pulse that is surging, large, weak, and soft indicates a difficult cure.
Main Formula (For Various Hemorrhoids): *Dang Gui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), *Lian Qiao* (Forsythiae Fructus), *Sheng Di* (Rehmanniae Radix), *Shao Yao* (Paeoniae Radix Alba), *Fang Feng* tips, *Jing Jie* (Schizonepetae Spica), *Bai Zhi* (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), *Zhi Zi* (Gardeniae Fructus), *Tiao Qin* (Scutellariae Radix), *Di Yu* (Sanguisorbae Radix) (equal parts); *Gan Cao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (half dose).
