Damp-heat in the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner) stagnates and fails to circulate, leading to sweating in the genital area and scrotum. The treatment should focus on promoting diuresis and draining dampness.
Main Formula: Huashi (Talcum), Longdancao (Gentian Root), Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alisma), Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) (each 1 qian), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) (3 fen), plus Dengxincao (Juncus Effusus Achenes) (20 pieces). Decoct in water and take orally.
Simple Prescription: Roasted garlic mashed with Danshichi (Prepared Soybean) into pills, coated with Zhusha (Cinnabar). Take 30 pills on an empty stomach, washed down with Dengxincao tea.
Another Method: Calcined Gefen (Margarita Shell Powder) and Muli (Oyster Shell) are ground into extremely fine powder, placed in a silk bag, and applied as a dusting powder.
Damp-heat invading the Spleen Meridian causes sweating in the palms and soles. In winter, when Yang Qi is stored internally, sweating increases further.
Main Formula: Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Fuling (Poria), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Huashi (Talcum) (each 1 qian), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome) (7 fen), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 3 fen). Decoct with Dengxincao (Juncus Effusus Achenes) and take orally.
Simple Prescription: Decoct Baifan (Alumen) and Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) in water, and wash frequently.
Another Method: Grind Muli (Oyster Shell), Tuoseng (Zinc Oxide), Kufan (Calcined Alumen), and Huangdan (Red Lead) into powder, and sprinkle it between the toes.
The Classic states: "All spasms, rigidity, and retained fluids belong to Dampness." Thick and turbid substances are Phlegm (Tan), associated with Lung Fire; clear and thin fluids are Fluid Retention (Yin), associated with Spleen Dampness. There are five types of Phlegm: Wind-Phlegm, Damp-Phlegm, Food-Phlegm, Fire-Phlegm, and Wine-Phlegm.
Wind-Phlegm arises from cold exposure and drinking cold liquids, external contraction with internal stagnation; the phlegm is clear, white, and abundant in saliva, potentially leading to paralysis.
Damp-Phlegm results from consuming raw, cold, and damp foods that accumulate and fail to dissipate, causing fatigue and weakness, or swelling of the face and abdomen.
Food-Phlegm stems from rich, greasy, spicy, and fried foods, combined with excessive warmth, often forming masses.
Fire-Phlegm occurs when fire flares up in various meridians, scorching the Lung Metal, thickening body fluids, and potentially forming abscesses or atrophy.
Wine-Phlegm is caused by excessive alcohol consumption without proper metabolism, leading to vomiting the next day and lung injury with accumulation.
Qi and Blood flow continuously without interruption; any stagnation leads to heat accumulation and the generation of Phlegm. Although some cases arise from Cold, most diseases originate from Phlegm. Examples include stroke with locked jaw, slurred speech, drooling, immobility, bowel/bladder dysfunction, dizziness, palpitations, sudden collapse, loss of consciousness, leukorrhea in women, infantile convulsions, and various systemic diseases.
There are four types of Fluid Retention (Yin): Tan Yin (Phlegm-Fluid), Xuan Yin (Hanging Fluid), Yi Yin (Overflowing Fluid), and Zhi Yin (Supporting Fluid).
Tan Yin: When a person becomes emaciated after being obese, with water moving in the intestines making gurgling sounds.
Xuan Yin: Water accumulating under the ribs, causing pain upon coughing and spitting.
Yi Yin: Water entering the limbs, causing body pain due to lack of sweating.
Zhi Yin: Coughing, wheezing, swelling, shortness of breath, and inability to lie flat.
These fluid disorders are often caused by drinking cold liquids after alcohol consumption. A slippery pulse indicates Phlegm; excess fullness in the middle and right pulses with Phlegm above the diaphragm suggests using emesis. Dark circles under the eyes indicate Phlegm. A liver pulse that is soggy, scattered, wiry, and floating indicates Fluid Retention. Treating Phlegm requires clearing the Lung and benefiting Qi; treating Fluid Retention requires strengthening the Spleen and drying Dampness.
Main Formula (Er Chen Tang / Two-Aged Decoction): Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) (each 3 qian), Fuling (Poria) (2 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root) (1 qian), add San Pian Jiang (Three slices of Ginger) and Yi Li Zao (One Date). Decoct and take.
To promote Qi movement, add Zhike (Bitter Orange Fruit) and Jiegeng (Platycodon Root). For excess Fire, add Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), and Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit). To clear the Lung, add Sangbaipi (Mulberry Root Bark) and Xingren (Apricot Seed). For Wine-Phlegm, add Gegen (Kudzu Root), Sharen (Amomum Fruit), and Wumei (Mume Fruit). For nodules in the throat, add Haishi (Floating Stone) and Mangxiao (Mirabilite). For Cold-Phlegm, add Guigui (Cinnamon Bark) and Ganjiang (Dried Ginger). For Damp-Phlegm flowing and causing swelling, add Ke (Bitter Orange Fruit), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Jiu Huangqin (Wine-processed Scutellaria Root), Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), Muxiang (Vladimiria Root), Honghua (Carthamus Flower), Zhuli (Bamboo Sap), and Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice). For Stagnant Phlegm and Flowing Fluids, add Nanxing (Arisaema with Bile), Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), Muxiang (Vladimiria Root), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), and Gualou Shi (Trichosanthes Seed). For all Fluid Disorders, add Xuansu Hua (Inula Flower), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alisma), and Rougui (Cinnamon Bark).
Daotan Tang (Expelling Phlegm Decoction): Treats excessive Phlegm with Qi stagnation.
Main Formula adds Nanting (Arisaema with Bile) and Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit).
Wendan Tang (Warm the Gallbladder Decoction): Calms the Spirit, resolves Phlegm, and stops vomiting.
Main Formula adds Zhuru (Bamboo Spindle) and Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit).
Juantan Shuqi Tang (Dispersing Phlegm and Regulating Qi Decoction): Treats all Phlegm diseases and Lung Qi obstruction. Take this decoction during the day and Gun Tan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill) at night.
Qianhu (Peucedani Radix) [For those prone to depression and anger, first use Chaihu (Bupleurum Root) for several doses], Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) (each 2 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Root) [Use for deficiency; contraindicated in Phlegm-Fire], Kuqin (Scutellaria Root), Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Nanting (Arisaema with Bile), Zhike (Bitter Orange Fruit), Zisu (Perilla Leaf), Boheye (Mint Leaf), Houpo (Magnolia Bark), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 5 fen), add Wu Pian Jiang (Five slices of Ginger). Decoct in water and take. Add Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens) for stroke. Remove Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) if there is no heat.
Gun Tan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill): Treats Phlegm generated by Fire flaring up, which overcomes Lung Metal and scorches body fluids, causing continuous day and night coughing and expectoration. It treats all Excess-Heat conditions, cough with excessive phlegm, mania, paralysis, wind-toxic swelling of cheeks and jaws, neck nodules, wandering pain throughout the body, headache, toothache, hiccupping with acid regurgitation, chest oppression and Qi masses, salivary fluid regurgitation, palpitations and fright, Yin-Yang blockage, chronic Phlegm asthma, throat closure with red eyes, scrofula, amenorrhea in women, pediatric cough with heat, Phlegm-asthma with convulsions. Its effects are too numerous to list. It also treats post-stroke slurred speech and limb flaccidity, and strange diseases. Contraindicated in diarrhea and pregnancy.
Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome) [Select Jinwen variety, cut, mix with good wine, steam nine times over rice, then dry], Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) [Select withered slices, remove rot, process with Bamboo Sap] (each 8 liang), Mengshi (Limonite) [Select nitre-gold color, water-grind and re-grind heavily] (1 liang), Chenxiang (Agarwood) [Select purple variety, genuine if oil beads form upon heating] (5 qian).
Grind all into powder, make pills with water the size of mustard seeds. Robust adults take 1 qian; weak or elderly take 5-7 fen; children take 2 fen. After dinner, swallow with a mouthful of tea soup, ensuring the pill passes the throat, then lie supine immediately to allow the medicine to attack the Phlegm in the throat from top to bottom. The next morning, if stools are not passed, reduce the dose. If Phlegm is not expelled, increase the dose. Those prone to Phlegm with dry bowels should take 3 fen every night to prevent stroke. Mixing with honey and sucking is excellent.
Sanhua Shenjing Wan (Three-Flower Divine Essence Pill): Treats all damp-heat accumulation, Phlegm-Fluid Qi stagnation, and resulting diseases. Or wind-heat dryness stagnation, limb numbness, wandering pain and swelling, wind-Phlegm asthma, Qi-Blood blockage, hydrops, distension, fullness and obstruction, and constipation.

Mix evenly, make pills with water the size of mustard seeds. Take 1 fen per dose, morning, noon, and evening. Once bowels are loose, take once daily.
This is a harsh formula for breaking accumulations and resolving Fluid Retention, causing severe reactions (mingxuan). It must be used appropriately to hit the target accurately. The key is to assess deficiency and excess, eliminate old pathogenic factors to generate new healthy Qi, smooth the Three Jiao, and regulate the Five Zang organs. It is a divine prescription. For infants with abdominal distension and constipation, take 3 li per dose.
Niuhuang Huotan Wan (Calculus Bovis Resolving Phlegm Pill): Treats stroke with mania, convulsions, stiff collapse, unconsciousness. Excessive Phlegm-saliva and tight jaw. For men, women, old, and young with excessive Phlegm causing asthma and fullness, especially in critical conditions. If Phlegm is resolved, peace ensues; if not, it is difficult to treat.
Danning (Stir-fried Pinellia with Betel Nut Juice), Tianzhuhuang (Himalayan Honeydew), Shu Dahuang (Prepared Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) [Withered, each 5 qian], Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb), Heiqiu (Black Morning Glory Seed) [Finest powder], Xuanmingfen (Mirabilite), Baifu Zi (Typhonium Rhizome), Tianma (Gastrodia Rhizome) (each 3 qian), Xionghuang (Realgar), Zhusha (Cinnabar), Mengshi (Limonite) [All water-ground, each 1.5 qian], Chenxiang (Agarwood) [Genuine, 1 qian], Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) [Genuine Shaanxi variety, 5 fen], Shexiang (Musk), Bingpian (Borneol) (2 fen).
Grind each into extremely fine powder, weigh and mix evenly. Make pills with honey the size of a bean, coated with Jinbo (Gold Foil). Take one pill per dose. For children, adjust dosage.
