As stated in the *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon): The Kidney corresponds to the bones, and its flourishing manifests in the hair. Excessive consumption of sweet flavors leads to bone pain and hair loss. It is also said: At the age of seven, a woman’s Kidney Qi becomes substantial; her teeth change, and her hair begins to grow. Around the age of thirty-five (five times seven), the Yangming channel declines; her face begins to wither, and her hair starts to fall out. At the age of eight, a man’s Kidney Qi becomes substantial; his hair grows, and his teeth change. Around the age of forty (five times eight), his Kidney Qi declines; his hair falls out, and his teeth become dry. It is further said: Beards that are yellowish-red indicate excess heat and Qi; white beards indicate deficient Blood and Qi; black beards indicate abundant Blood and deficient Qi. Those with beautiful eyebrows have abundant Blood in the Taiyang channel; those with full sideburns and chin beards have abundant Blood in the Shaoyin channel; those with beautiful chin beards have abundant Blood in the Yangming channel. This is determined by the timing of meridian Qi and Blood abundance. Generally, the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder channel manifests its flourishing in the beard; the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney channel manifests its flourishing in the hair. Therefore, when Qi and Blood are abundant, the beard and hair are black and beautiful; if Qi and Blood decline, the beard and hair turn white and fall out. It is difficult to restore what has already declined, but protection can be maintained before deterioration occurs. After the age of thirty, regularly taking tonics for Kidney Yin nourishment prevents withering.
