*Ling Shu: Jiu Zhen Lun* (Spiritual Pivot: Discussion on the Nine Needles)
The Yellow Emperor asked, "I wish to hear how the human body corresponds to the 'Nine Fields' (Jiu Ye). What does this mean?" (The term 'Nine Fields' refers to the positions of the Eight Trigrams and Nine Palaces.)
Qibo replied, "Please allow me to explain the correspondence between the body and the Nine Fields. The left foot corresponds to Lichun (Start of Spring), with the heavenly stems and earthly branches days of Wu Yin and Ji Chou. (Here, the left foot corresponds to the Gen Palace, located in the Northeast. After Lichun, it is the seasonal qi of the Northeast. The Yin and Chou days are the day branches of the Northeast. Therefore, their qi all correspond to the Gen Palace. However, Qian, Kun, Gen, and Xun are the four corner palaces; Zhen, Dui, Kan, and Li are the four cardinal palaces. Earth qi prospers at the end of the four seasons; thus, the four corner palaces all correspond to Wu and Ji days, while the four cardinal palaces each have their own ruling element. The following explanations follow this pattern.) The left hypochondrium corresponds to Chunfen (Spring Equinox), with the day Yi Mao. (Here, the left hypochondrium corresponds to the Zhen Palace. The left hypochondrium is due East. After Chunfen, it is the seasonal qi of the East. The Yi Mao day is the central position of the East. Therefore, their qi all correspond.) The left hand corresponds to Lixia (Start of Summer), with the days Wu Chen and Ji Si. (Here, the left hand corresponds to the Xun Palace, located in the Southeast. After Lixia, it is the seasonal qi of the Southeast. Wu Chen and Ji Si days are the day branches of the Southeast. Therefore, their qi all correspond.) The chest (Ying), throat, head, and face correspond to Xiazhi (Summer Solstice), with the day Bing Wu. (The chest is called Ying. The Ying, throat, head, and face correspond to the Li Palace, located due South. After Xiazhi, it is the seasonal qi of the South. The Bing Wu day is the central position of the South. Therefore, their qi all correspond.) The right hand corresponds to Qiuhua (Start of Autumn), with the days Wu Shen and Ji Wei. (Here, the right hand corresponds to the Kun Palace, located in the Southwest. After Qiuhua, it is the seasonal qi of the Southwest. Wu Shen and Ji You days are the day branches of the Southwest. Therefore, their qi all correspond.) The right hypochondrium corresponds to Qiufen (Autumn Equinox), with the day Xin You. (Here, the right hypochondrium corresponds to the Dui Palace, located due West. After Qiufen, it is the seasonal qi of the West. The Xin You day is the central position of the West. Therefore, their qi all correspond.) The right foot corresponds to Lidong (Start of Winter), with the days Wu Xu and Ji Hai. (Here, the right foot corresponds to the Qian Palace, located in the Northwest. After Lidong, it is the seasonal qi of the Northwest. Wu Xu and Ji Hai days are the day branches of the Northwest. Therefore, their qi all correspond.) The waist, sacrum, and lower orifices correspond to Dongzhi (Winter Solstice), with the day Ren Zi. (Here, the waist, sacrum, and lower orifices correspond to the Kan Palace, located due North. After Dongzhi, it is the seasonal qi of the North. The Ren Zi day is the central position of the North. Therefore, their qi all correspond.) The Six Fu Organs (Six Hollow Organs) and the three Zang Organs below the diaphragm correspond to the Central Region (Zhong Zhou). The greatest prohibition is on the days when Tai Yi resides and on all Wu and Ji days. (Here, below the diaphragm corresponds to the Central Palace. Below the diaphragm is the abdomen. The three Zang Organs refer to the Liver, Spleen, and Kidney. The Six Fu Organs and three Zang Organs are all in the abdomen below the diaphragm, so they correspond to the Central Region. The 'greatest prohibition' refers to the days when Tai Yi resides and all Wu and Ji days. Because Wu and Ji belong to Earth, although they prosper at the end of the four seasons, they are essentially the day branches of the Central Palace, so their qi correspondence is also like that of Tai Yi. Note: The meaning of Tai Yi comes from the *Jiu Gong Ba Feng* chapter, detailed in the Luck Category Volume 35, such as residing in the Ye Zhe Palace for 46 days after Winter Solstice, or in the Tian Liu Palace for 46 days after Start of Spring, etc. However, that text only mentions the eight palaces and does not mention the Central Palace. This section mentions the days when Tai Yi resides in the Central Palace. It is speculated that within the calculation of Tai Yi's movement in the eight palaces, any day when Earth qi rules during the four seasons is the period of Tai Yi in the Central Palace. Only scholars can correct this.) In all these nine cases, one should skillfully observe the locations of the Eight Correct Winds (Ba Zheng). (Nine refers to the Nine Palaces. Zheng refers to the Correct Wind. Ba Zheng refers to the locations of the Kingly Qi of the eight directions, which is Tai Yi. Once the Nine Palaces are determined, the qi of the Eight Correct Winds can be observed.) If there is a carbuncle or swelling on any part of the body (left, right, upper, or lower) that needs treatment, do not perform incision and drainage on the day corresponding to that specific location. This is called a 'Heavenly Taboo Day' (Tian Ji Ri). (The directions of the Eight Correct Winds of Heaven and Earth are where the body's qi is prosperous. Therefore, for any carbuncle or swelling on the left, right, upper, or lower body, do not perform incision and drainage on the day it corresponds to, lest it cause leakage of Yuan Qi (Original Qi) and violate the Heavenly Taboo, which is inauspicious. This should be read in conjunction with the chapters *Jiu Gong Ba Feng* and *Ze Feng Xie Qi Cheng Xu Shang Ren*, detailed in the Luck Category Volumes 35 and 36. Diagrams are still available in Volume 2 of *Tu Yi*.)
