Huangdi said: I wish to hear how pathogenic factors (Yin Xie) diffuse and spread. (Full text from *Ling Shu: Yin Xie Fa Meng Pian*. "Yin Xie Pan Yan" refers to strange pathogens causing dreams, with infinite variations.) Qibo said: Zheng Xie (Righteous Pathogens/Normal Pathogens) invades the interior from the exterior but has no fixed residence; instead, it contaminates the Zang organs, lacking a fixed location, moving together with Ying Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi), and flying along with Hun and Po (Soul and Corporeal Soul), causing restless sleep and frequent dreaming. (Zheng Xie does not refer to normal wind; it refers to any external influence of Yin-Yang or labor/rest, or internal stimulation by sounds, colors, desires, or cravings that interfere with the body and mind. Since these changes are elusive and have no fixed residence, they internally contaminate the Zang organs, disrupting Ying, Wei, Hun, and Po, leading to dreams corresponding to these stimuli.) When Qi overflows into the Fu organs, there is excess externally and deficiency internally; (Excess of Yang Qi.) When Qi overflows into the Zang organs, there is excess internally and deficiency externally. (Excess of Yin Qi.) Huangdi asked: Do excess and deficiency have specific manifestations? Qibo replied: When Yin Qi is excessive, one dreams of wading through large waters and feeling fear; (Because Yin overcomes Yang, dreams often feature Yin imagery.) When Yang Qi is excessive, one dreams of great fires burning; (Because Yang overcomes Yin, dreams often feature Yang imagery. Fan, pronounced like Rui.) When both Yin and Yang are excessive, one dreams of killing each other; (Conflict arises from mutual excess, hence dreams of combat.) When the upper part is excessive, one dreams of flying; (Yang dominance relates to ascending.) When the lower part is excessive, one dreams of falling; (Yin dominance relates to descending.) Extreme hunger leads to dreams of taking things; (Due to deficiency.) Extreme fullness leads to dreams of giving things; (Due to excess.) Liver Qi excessive leads to dreams of anger; (The emotion associated with the Liver is Anger.) Lung Qi excessive leads to dreams of fear, crying, or flying; (The emotion associated with the Lung is Worry/Sorrow, hence fear and crying. The Lung governs Qi, hence flying.) Heart Qi excessive leads to dreams of joy, crying, terror, and fear; (The emotion associated with the Heart is Joy; its pathological change involves Sorrow.) Spleen Qi excessive leads to dreams of singing and music, and a heavy body unable to move; (The Spleen enjoys music, its sound is song, and it governs muscles.) Kidney Qi excessive leads to dreams of the waist and spine feeling disconnected. (The waist is the mansion of the Kidney, so it feels as if the waist and spine are not connected.) For these twelve types of excess conditions, applying draining methods upon their arrival will cure them immediately. (Yang excess results in Fu organ excess; Yin excess results in Zang organ excess. By observing the location of the pathogen and using acupuncture to drain it, the condition resolves.)
When Jue Qi (Rebellious Qi) lodges in the Heart, one dreams of hills, mountains, and smoke/fire. (The Heart belongs to Fire.) Lodging in the Lung, one dreams of flying and seeing strange objects like gold and iron. (The Lung belongs to Metal.) Lodging in the Liver, one dreams of forests and trees. (The Liver belongs to Wood.) Lodging in the Spleen, one dreams of hills, large marshes, ruined houses, wind, and rain. (The Spleen belongs to Earth and governs Dampness.) Lodging in the Kidney, one dreams of approaching abysses and being submerged in water. (The Kidney belongs to Water.) Lodging in the Bladder, one dreams of traveling. (The Bladder is the Foot-Taiyang Meridian, belonging to the exterior of the Three Yang.) Lodging in the Stomach, one dreams of eating and drinking. (The Stomach is the Sea of Water and Grain.) Lodging in the Large Intestine, one dreams of fields. (The Large Intestine is the official of transmission; its twists and capacity for waste resemble fields.) Lodging in the Small Intestine, one dreams of crowded cities and thoroughfares. (The Small Intestine is the official of reception and containment; where substances gather, resembling cities and roads.) Lodging in the Gallbladder, one dreams of fighting, litigation, or self-disembowelment. (The Gallbladder governs decision-making and has a rigid nature. Ku means to disembowel, pronounced Ku.) Lodging in the neck, one dreams of beheading. (This represents the reach of terror.) Lodging in the shins, one dreams of walking but unable to advance, or dwelling in deep cellars. (Jue-ni pathogenic factors are located in the lower body. Wan is synonymous with cellar.) Lodging in the thighs and arms, one dreams of performing ceremonial bows and rising. (Caused by fatigue and strain.) Lodging in the Bao (Bladder/Uterus), one dreams of urination and defecation. (Bao refers to the urinary bladder. , refers to the Large Intestine. If anterior, dreams of urination; if posterior, dreams of defecation. Bao is pronounced Pao. is pronounced Zhi.) For these fifteen types of deficiency conditions, applying tonifying methods upon their arrival will cure them immediately. (One should follow the respective meridians and use acupuncture to tonify.)
Abundance of short parasites leads to dreams of gathering crowds. (*Su Wen: Mai Yao Jing Wei Lun*. This symbolizes prosperity.) Abundance of long parasites leads to dreams of mutual striking and injury. (Long parasites contend with each other, causing internal damage, hence the dream omen reflects this. Regarding the text of this chapter, passages identical to previous chapters are not repeated, so only these two items remain. Note: The *Rites of Zhou* describes six types of dreams: 1. Zheng Meng (Correct Dream): Dreams arising without external cause; 2. E Meng (Nightmare): Dreams caused by sudden fright; 3. Si Meng (Thinking Dream): Dreams arising from reflection and memory; 4. Wu Meng (Waking Dream): Dreams arising from actions performed while awake; 5. Xi Meng (Joyful Dream): Dreams arising from preferences; 6. Ju Meng (Fearful Dream): Dreams arising from terror. Guan Yinzi said: Those who love benevolence often dream of pine, cypress, peach, and plum trees; those who love righteousness often dream of gold, knives, soldiers, and iron; those who love propriety often dream of ritual vessels like Gui, Bi, Bian, and Dou; those who love wisdom often dream of rivers, lakes, and marshes; those who love trustworthiness often dream of mountains and plains. All are subject to the Five Elements, and none are exceptions. These are all causes of dreaming. As for the infinite variety of dreams, such as Duke Zhao of Song dreaming of becoming a bird, Zhuang Zhou dreaming of becoming a butterfly, Emperor Guangwu dreaming of riding a red dragon to heaven, and Tao Kan dreaming of growing eight wings to fly into the Heavenly Gate—what are the causes of these? The transformation of the Five Elements is inherently infinite, yet dreams are created by the Heart, sharing a single principle. Because the Heart is the Sovereign Official and the residence of Shen (Spirit), when Shen moves within the Heart, the Spirits of the Five Zang organs respond. Thus, where the Heart goes, Shen follows; where Shen goes, the Heart follows. However, when the Heart is controlled by emotions to produce dreams, it is due to attachment, which becomes an obstacle to the Heart. When Shen guides the Heart to produce dreams, it can foreshadow events invisibly, demonstrating the spiritual efficacy of Shen. The spirituality of the human heart reaches everywhere; thus, the bizarre images in dreams are also seen everywhere, truly indescribable by words. Only sages can control external objects with the Heart and regulate the Heart with Nature (Xing). In such cases, the Heart aligns with Creation, and how could the Five Elements enslave it? Therefore, the Perfect Person (Zhi Ren) has no dreams.)
