Grain harvests fail, accompanied by coughing and nasal congestion (biu, nasal obstruction), corresponding in the heavens to Yinghuo (Mars) and Taibai (Venus). If Yangming Dryness-Metal Qi overlays the year's operation, Metal Qi is clear and austere, causing White Dew to fall early, with gathering and killing Qi prevailing, and cold rain damaging all things. However, when Metal overcomes, Fire must decline; when Fire declines, Earth must weaken. Thus, insects infest foods that are sweet in taste and yellow in color (as sweetness and yellow belong to Earth), being eroded by Yin Cold Qi, hence insects arise. Observing that sun-drying can remove insect damage reveals that insects are Yin entities. Therefore, in the human body, Spleen-Earth is likely affected by pathogenic factors. If Metal overcomes without cessation, Fire retaliates, causing red-colored grains to mature late, while Human Heart-Fire becomes prosperous later, overcoming Lung-Metal from above. All white, Metal-associated grains will have their Qi suppressed. "Jin Gu" refers to rice. "Qiu" refers to nasal obstruction. Its celestial correspondence is that when Yinghuo is bright and Taibai is dim, disasters have their specific attribution. Wang Bing stated: Metal destroys Wood, borrowing a path through Earth; the child resides within the mother, which is the image of insects; thus, sweet and yellow foods are eaten by worms. Qiu is pronounced "qiu".
In years of insufficient Fire, Cold prevails largely, the governance of Long Summer is ineffective, objects flourish downwards but not upwards, condensation and desolation become severe, Yang Qi fails to transform, and the glory and beauty of flora are broken. This corresponds to Chenxing (Mercury). (These are Gui years. With insufficient Fire, Water exploits the deficiency, so Cold prevails. With Long governance ineffective, objects cannot flourish upwardly but only downwardly. Condensation and desolation indicate Yang decline, so glory is broken. In its celestial correspondence, Chenxing should be bright.)
The people suffer from chest pain, fullness and distension in the hypochondrium, pain in both hypochondria, pain in the chest, back, scapulae, and inner arms, dizziness and visual obscuration, sudden heart pain and aphonia, abdominal distension, and pulling pain between the hypochondrium and lower back. (Mao refers to a sensation of being covered or obscured, or alternatively, blindness. Insufficient Fire leads to flourishing Yin pathogens and injury to Heart Qi, causing these diseases, which occur along the pathways of the Pericardium Meridian and Heart Meridian. Although these meridians do not traverse the back, the Heart is located above the diaphragm, a Yang organ of the back, so pain radiates to the lower back. The *Treatise on Organ Qi and Timing* states: When Heart Qi is deficient, the chest and abdomen become large, and there is pulling pain between the hypochondrium and waist.) In severe cases, the body bends and cannot straighten, the hips and thighs feel as if separated and unusable. This corresponds to Yinghuo and Chenxing, and the associated grain is Dan-colored (red). (Severe Yin-Cold stagnation prevents Yang Qi from circulating, causing these ailments. Huabi refers to the area between buttocks and thighs. "Ru bie" means feeling as if separated and non-functional. Water exploiting Fire causes Yinghuo to lose light and Chenxing to increase brightness, bringing disaster to the associated constellations; Dan-colored grains fail to mature due to this Qi.)
If a retaliation occurs due to Fire insufficiency, dust accumulates, heavy rain approaches, Black Qi (Water Qi) is suppressed, and diseases include loose stools, abdominal fullness, inability to eat or drink, cold entering the middle causing borborygmus, diarrhea with abdominal pain, sudden spasms, flaccidity, bi-syndrome, and feet unable to support the body. This corresponds to Zhensheng (Saturn) and Chenxing, and black grains fail. (Fire decline and Water hyperactivity lead to Earth retaliation. Earth's transformation is dampness, which invades the Water organ, causing abdominal fullness, poor appetite, borborygmus, diarrhea, flaccidity, and inability to bear weight on the feet. Black Qi is Water Qi. Ru means suppression. , meaning duck. Refers to loose stool resembling duck droppings, caused by cold-dampness. Earth retaliating against Water makes Zhensheng bright and moist, while Chenxing dims, and Xuan-colored (black) grains fail. Pronounced like "mu" or "wu".)
In years of insufficient Earth, Wind prevails largely, transformation Qi does not govern, grass and trees flourish vigorously, swaying excessively, flowering but failing to fruit. This corresponds to Suixing (Jupiter). (These are Ji years. Insufficient Earth allows Wood to exploit, so Wind prevails and Transformation Qi loses command. Wood monopolizes governance, causing lush vegetation. However, growth originates in Wood but matures in Earth; with insufficient Earth Qi, although flowers appear, fruits do not form. Wood's celestial correspondence means Suixing should be bright.)
The people suffer from undigested diarrhea, cholera-like symptoms, heavy body, abdominal pain, trembling of bones and sinews, muscle twitching and soreness, irritability, chaotic organ Qi, early appearance of hibernating insects, and common cold-in-middle disorders. This corresponds to Suixing and Zhensheng, and yellow grains fail. (Yaofu refers to trembling and recurrence. The *Genjie Chapter* states: "Bone yaofu" means shaking. This is the character . , means jumping/twitching. Suan means soreness. These diseases like undigested diarrhea result from weak Spleen and strong Liver. Insufficient Earth Qi leaves Cold-Water unchecked, causing chaotic organ Qi. Early insect appearance reflects organ Qi. Common cold-middle indicates decline of Fire and Earth. Correspondence to Suixing and Zhensheng implies Suixing is bright and Zhensheng is dim. Yellow grains belong to Earth and fail to mature. Pronounced like "yun". sounds like "jin", meaning yellow.)
If retaliation occurs due to Earth insufficiency, the harvesting policy becomes severe, famous trees wither and turn blue-green, sudden chest and hypochondriac pain radiating to the lower abdomen, frequent sighing, insect damage to sweet/yellow foods, pathogenic Qi lodging in the Spleen, reduction of yellow grains, decreased appetite and loss of taste, and damage to green/blue grains. This corresponds to Taibai and Suixing. (Earth decline and Wood hyperactivity lead to Metal retaliation, causing harsh harvesting Qi and tree withering. Chest/hypochondriac pain radiating down is a Liver/Gallbladder issue. Insect damage, Qi in Spleen, and reduced yellow grains indicate Fire/Earth decline. Earth decline weakens Spleen, causing poor appetite and lost taste. Metal victory weakens Wood, damaging green grains. Celestial correspondence: Taibai brightens, Suixing loses color.)
If Jueyin Wind-Liver overlays the year, flowing water does not freeze, hibernating insects emerge, Kidney Qi is inactive, White Qi does not retaliate, corresponding to Suixing, and the people are healthy. (These are Jisi and Jihai years. Overlaying Jueyin places Shaoyang Ministerial Fire in the Earthly Branch, so water doesn't freeze and insects emerge. Fire governing the Earth prevents Water organ Qi from functioning and White Metal Qi from retaliating. Suixing commands exclusively, and people are healthy.)
In years of insufficient Metal, hot fire prevails, Sheng Qi (growth) acts, Chang Qi (long summer) dominates, myriad things flourish, dryness and heat prevail. This corresponds to Yinghuo. (These are Yi years. Insufficient Metal allows Fire to exploit, so hot fire prevails. Metal cannot overcome Wood, so Sheng Qi acts and things flourish. Fire alone reigns, so Chang Qi wins and dryness/heat prevails. Celestial correspondence: Yinghuo shines brightly. Shuo is pronounced "shi zhuo qie".)
The people suffer from shoulder and back heaviness and oppression, nasal congestion and sneezing, blood in stool or profuse diarrhea, delayed harvesting Qi, corresponding to Taibai, and hard-husked grains fail. (Mao means oppression/stuffiness. Qiu means nasal congestion with runny nose. Metal受 Fire pathogen causes these. Delayed harvesting means Taibai has no light; hard-husked grains fail, all reflecting insufficient Metal Qi. Mao pronounced "mao", "wu", "mo". Ti pronounced "di".)
If retaliation occurs due to Metal insufficiency, cold rain arrives suddenly, followed by hail, frost, and snow killing plants. Yin reversal and gridlock occur, Yang Qi floats upward, causing headache at the back of the head extending to the vertex with fever. This corresponds to Chenxing, Dan-colored grains fail, people suffer mouth ulcers, and in severe cases, heart pain. (Metal decline and Fire hyperactivity lead to Water retaliation, causing sudden cold rain, hail, frost, snow, and plant damage—this is the change of Cold. Jue means reversal. Ge means rejection/gridlock. Cold dominating below causes Yin reversal repelling Yang upward, called "rootless fire," causing head/mouth/heart diseases. Celestially, Chenxing should be bright. Terrestrially, Dan grains fail. Note: Here Water retaliates against Fire decline; it should say Yinghuo and Chenxing correspond; omitting Yinghuo is a textual lacuna. Bao pronounced "bo".)
In years of insufficient Water, dampness prevails largely, Chang Qi acts inversely, transformation is rapid, summer heat and rain come frequently. This corresponds to Zhensheng. (These are Xin years. Insufficient Water allows Earth to exploit, so dampness prevails. Water decline leads to Fire-Earth synergy, so Chang Qi acts inversely and transforms rapidly. Corresponds to Zhensheng's brightness.)
The people suffer from abdominal fullness, heavy body, damp diarrhea, cold ulcers weeping fluid, lumbar and thigh pain onset, difficulty in thighs/knees, vexation and depression, foot flaccidity and cold reversal, sole pain, and in severe cases, edema. Organ Qi fails to govern, Kidney Qi is unbalanced. This corresponds to Chenxing, and black grains fail. (Excessive Earth-Dampness injures Kidney Yin, causing these. Cold ulcers weeping fluid are Yin erosion/ulcers. Fenyuan is vexation/depression. Qingjue is cold reversal. zhong is edema. Zang Qi here refers to Water Qi. Heng means balance. No governance/balance indicates Water Qi decline. Corresponds to dim Chenxing and failed grains. refers to black millet.)
If Taiyin Damp-Earth overlays the year, great cold occurs frequently, hibernating insects hide early, ground accumulates hard ice, sunlight is subdued. People suffer lower-body cold diseases, severe abdominal fullness and edema. This corresponds to Zhensheng, governed by black grains. (Xinchou and Xinwei years. Taiyin Damp-Earth ruling Heaven places Taiyang Cold-Water in Earth. Great cold occurs, sunlight is subdued. Severe fullness/edema is Damp-Earth victory injuring Kidney Qi. Correspondence: Zhensheng brightens. Below: Black grains succeed.)
If retaliation occurs due to Water insufficiency, great storms erupt, grass bends, trees shed leaves, growth is not fresh/vivid, facial color changes intermittently, sinews and bones contract and deviate, muscles twitch, vision blurs (KT KT), objects crack due to wind, skin rashes erupt, Qi gathers in the diaphragm causing heart/abdominal pain, Yellow Qi diminishes, grains fail. This corresponds to Suixing. (Water decline and Earth hyperactivity lead to Wood retaliation, causing storms, fallen grass/trees, and mistimed growth lacking vividness. Intermittent color change indicates Liver Qi movement. Bing means contraction. Pi means deviation/lateral paralysis. Ruan yuan means twitching/spasm. KT KT means unclear vision. Wen means cracking due to wind. Liver Qi outside causes skin rashes; inside causes heart/abdominal pain, all due to Wood victory. Thus Yellow Qi (Earth) damages and Earth-grains fail. Celestially, only Suixing should be bright. Commentary: Five Movements have excess and deficiency, generating winning and retaliating. Excess wins without check, causing great harm. Deficiency lacks retaliation, leading to extreme chaos. This cycle is natural and inevitable. In heaven, five stars correspond; in earth, ten thousand things wax/wane; in humans, organs disease. E.g., Wood strong overcomes Earth, Suixing bright, Zhensheng dim. Earth (mother) insulted, Child (Metal) retaliates to save Earth, so Taibai brightens, Suixing dims. Qi appearing above brings disaster below. Constellations injured, rebellion worse. Five Movements win/retaliate reciprocally. In disease, Wood victory strengthens Liver, injures Spleen-Earth. Unchecked Liver victory, Dryness retaliates, injuring Liver. Unchecked Dryness victory, Fire retaliates, injuring Lung. Five Zang reciprocally wax/wane. Heavenly movement excess/deficiency equals human body deficiency/excess. Deficiency allows strength to win; victory invites retaliation. No decline, no win; no win, no retaliation. No win/retaliation means peaceful Qi, no disease. Arrogance exhausts Yuan Qi, leading to deficiency. Thus: Victory brings retaliation; no victory, no retaliation. Small victory, small retaliation; great victory, great retaliation. Severity depends on change magnitude, having no constant rule. As detailed in *Liyuan Zhengji*, explaining heavenly/earthly/human principles. Like I Ching's 64 hexagrams and 384 lines, revealing subtle Dao, teaching seeking principle via hexagrams, knowing change via images. Confucius said: Books don't fully express words, words don't fully express intent. This aligns with this text. Heavenly Dao is profound, hard to measure; even sages don't know all. Readers of I Ching should know changes exist, not limit them. Readers of Yunqi should know principles exist, not rigidify them. Changes are unpredictable, but Yi captures nuances; Heavenly Dao is hard to measure, but Yunqi captures wonders. Since gaining knowledge, I used 5-6 meanings to predict Qi shifts; 70-80% matched. Minor mismatches are frog-in-well views, not invalidating Heavenly Dao. Ignorant people ignore constant/change, wax/wane, master/guest positions, sticking to text, harming meaning, trying to bound infinite Dao with finite years. This is narrow. Others like Ma Zongsu fake Zhang Zhongjing's name for Shanghan texts, using Yunqi for prescriptions, rigid and erroneous. Yet others deny Yunqi, asking what good it is for medicine, claiming diseases can't be treated by Yunqi. I reply: Such views suggest Yunqi isn't needed, but Yunqi Dao is hard to speak! Yearly Qi flow relates to safety/danger. Epidemics cause widespread wind-warmth; cold injuries cause diarrhea/dysentery; smallpox/measles vary in fortune; carbuncles follow yin/yang types; coughs affect villages; joint pains plague many; strokes or phlegm-fire prevail. Many suffering same disease proves Yunqi influence. Li Dongyuan created Puji Xiaodu Yin in Yuan Dynasty to save lives during epidemics—wasn't this Yunqi? Obvious Yunqi is easy to see; subtle ones are hidden. People differ in constitution, climate varies, benefits/harms differ due to Qi intersection. Solar person meeting Liuyan (Water) Qi; Taiyin person meeting Hexi (Fire) Era. Strong checked, weak supported, Qi balanced, no disease. Strong Yang meets Fire, intense heat arises; Yin Cold meets Water, frost/ice forms. Heaven has Tianfu, Years have Suihui, how can Humans not harmonize? Foreseeing prevention is superior wisdom; handling based on signs is bright medicine; denying existence is inferior folly. Whether Yunqi is essential need not be debated; lament is scarcity of those who know it. Rigid thinkers aren't wise; ignorant aren't talented; both are flawed. Wise ones observe Yunqi by following Heaven, seeking Qi through change. Du Yu on calendar: Observers follow Heaven to match, don't force Heaven to match observer. Same for Yunqi. Grasping meaning reveals win/retaliate/wax/wane logic. Responding to signs applies usefully. Dai Ren said: If disease doesn't match current year's Qi, look to other years' Yunqi. Seek living methods from that year, find them in Zhizhen. Though imperfect, it approximates Yunqi intent. pronounced "yun". Ruan pronounced "chi". KT pronounced "huang". Wen pronounced "wen".)
The Emperor said: Good. I wish to hear about their timing. (Below discusses insufficient years, where governance/transformation/win/retaliate have specific times. Excess years don't discuss win/retaliate, so only insufficient years do.)
Qibo said: Thorough question! If Wood is insufficient, Spring has gentle breeze and smooth growth transformation, then Autumn has fog/dew and cool governance. If Spring has cruel/harsh winning Qi, then Summer has blazing heat retaliation. Disaster in East, organ Liver, disease internal to hypochondrium, external to joints. (Harmony is transformation/governance, normal operation. Disharmony is win/retaliate, Qi variation. If Wood insufficient, Metal should overcome. If Metal doesn't win, Wood unharmed, Spring has gentle growth, Autumn has cool governance without retaliation, this is Harmony. If Spring shows Metal's cruelty, Wood generates Fire, Fire overcomes Metal, Summer has blazing retaliation, this is Variation. Win/retaliate stem from Wood, so disaster in East. Organ Liver, internal hypochondrium, external joints, hence these diseases. Next sections similar. Fan pronounced "fan". Shuo pronounced "shi zhuo qie". Sheng pronounced "sheng".)
If Fire is insufficient, Summer has bright/light transformation, then Winter has solemn/frost-cold governance. If Summer has cruel/freezing winning Qi, then irregularly there is dusty/dark heavy rain retaliation. Disaster in South, organ Heart, disease internal to chest/hypochondrium, external to collaterals. (Insufficient Fire, Water should exploit. If Water doesn't insult Fire and Summer has this transformation, Water has no retaliation, Winter has this governance. If Water ignores virtue and Summer has this win, Fire generates Earth, Earth overcomes Water, irregularly this retaliation occurs. Disaster South, organ Heart, Fire correspondence.)
If Earth is insufficient, Four Corners have dusty/cloud-moist transformation, then Spring has gentle breeze drumming governance. If Four Corners have shaking/tearing/swirling variations, then Autumn has肃杀 (solemn-killing) and continuous rain retaliation. Disaster in Four Corners, organ Spleen, disease internal to heart/abdomen, external to muscles/limbs. (Four Corners: Chen/Xu/Chou/Wei months/directions. Insufficient Earth, Wood should win. If Wood doesn't insult Earth and Four Corners have this transformation, Wood has no retaliation, Spring has this governance. If Wood wins Earth and Four Corners have this variation, Earth generates Metal, Metal overcomes Wood, Autumn has this retaliation. Disaster Four Corners, organ Spleen, Earth correspondence. La pronounced "la". Yin pronounced "yin".)
If Metal is insufficient, Summer has bright/oppressive-steam order, then Winter has strict/cold-solid response. If Summer has blazing-fire variation, then Autumn has hail/frost/snow retaliation. Disaster in West, organ Lung, disease internal to chest/hypochondrium/shoulder-back, external to skin/hair. (Insufficient Metal, Fire should win. If Fire is correct and Summer has this order, Water has no retaliation, Winter has this response. If Fire insults Metal and Summer has this variation, Metal's child Water overcomes Fire, Autumn has this retaliation. Disaster West, organ Lung, Metal correspondence. Note: These two sections mention Fire/Earth control before Metal/Water origin, differing from first three sections, merely stylistic variation, meaning identical.)
If Water is insufficient, Four Corners have rushing/moist-dusty transformation, then irregularly have gentle wind/generating response. If Four Corners have dusty/dark sudden rain variations, then irregularly have swirling/shaking retaliation. Disaster in North, organ Kidney, disease internal to waist/spine/marrow, external to valleys/knees. (Insufficient Water, Earth should win. If Earth doesn't oppress and Four Corners have proper transformation, Wood has no retaliation, irregularly proper response. If Earth oppresses and Four Corners have variation, Water's child Wood overcomes Earth, irregularly this retaliation. Disaster North, organ Kidney, Water correspondence. Tuan pronounced "tong guan". same as .)
The governance of Five Movements is like a scale: High is suppressed, low is lifted, transformation responds, variation retaliates. This is the principle of growth, transformation, maturation, storage, collection—the norm of Qi. Deviation causes heaven and earth to block. (Heaven-earth Yin-Yang Dao is like a scale's balance, cannot tolerate slight loss...)
