Liu: Yin malaria (a type of malaria characterized by chills and irregular onset) had persisted for a long time and temporarily healed, but after childbirth, improper recuperation led to skin pruritus with gooseflesh, bone tremors, and lingering alternating chills and fever. The deficiency of both Yin and Yang resulted in the failure of these two Qi to govern and protect the body. Treatment employed the method of warming Yang and securing Yin: Lu Jiao Shuang (Deer Horn Frost), Buguzhi (Fructus Psoraleae), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (each 1 qian); Lushen (Radix Codonopsis Pilosae), Gouqi (Fructus Lycii Chinensis), Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae Tenuifoliae) (each 2 qian); Fushen (Poria with Hostwood) (3 qian); Sheng Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, raw) (8 fen); Zhi Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis, honey-fried) (6 fen); Xiaomai (Frumentum Tritici Vulgaris) (0.5 he); Hongzao (Fructus Jujubae) (5 pieces). After ten doses, various symptoms gradually subsided. However, the right pulse was deep and small, and the left Cun position was deficient. Lu Jiao, Gouqi, and Buguzhi were removed from the original prescription, and herbs tonifying the Heart and Spleen were added: Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae Oppositae), Zaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae), Lianzi (Semen Nelumbinis), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (all stir-fried). After several doses, appetite improved, and chills and fever disappeared. Subsequently, the condition changed, presenting with upward deviation of the eyes (fanmu), rebellious Qi with coughing, aphonia, and dull complexion. This indicated the daily depletion of the Zhen Qi (True Qi) of the Zang-Fu organs and the internal loss of spiritual brilliance; clearing the Lung and regulating cough must be strictly avoided. Quickly administer Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis), Shanyao, Fushen, Lushen, Gouqi, Hetaorou (Semen Juglandis), Hezipi (Pericarpium Terminaliae Chebulae), Lianzi, and Hongzao. After dozens of doses, cough ceased, and voice returned. Later, through regulatory and tonic treatment, full recovery was achieved.
Yin: The pulse was fine and choppy, indicating a chronic deficiency of Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi. In autumn and winter, the back felt cold and the calves were cold. Menstruation was delayed, and pregnancy had never occurred. This signifies deficiency of the Chong, Ren, and Du meridians, with an old ailment dragging on into a severe stage of Laoqie (Consumptive Disease). Recently, there has been coughing with copious sputum, worsening at midnight and early morning. It is presumed that Phlegm accumulated in the Spleen is stirred by respiration during wakefulness, causing incessant choking coughs. First, administer Ping Sou Decoction (Cough-Calming Decoction), then prescribe a medicinal paste specifically targeting the Extraordinary Vessels. Chuanbei (Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii), Tian Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, sweet), Loupi (Pericarpium Trichosanthis) (all stir-fried and ground), Fuling (Poria), Qianhu (Radix Peucedani), Juhong (Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae Rubrum), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Zhi Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis, honey-fried), Lushen, Sangpi (Cortex Mori, honey-fried), Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), and Zao (Fructus Jujubae) decocted together. After three doses, cough settled. Loupi and Qianhu were removed, and Lianzi, Shanyao, Wuweizi, and Gouqi (all stir-fried) were added. Several more doses were taken. Once the cough healed, the medicinal paste was administered: Buguzhi, Gouqi, Shayuan (Semen Astragali Complanati), Guishen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, root portion), Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae Ulmoidis), Tusibing (Semen Cuscutae, cake), Hetaorou, Qianshi (Semen Euryales), Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae, wine-steamed), Shouwu (Radix Polygoni Multiflori Preparata), Fushen, Yuzhu (Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati) boiled together, using double the amount of Lujiao Jiao (Colla Cornus Cervi) to set the gel. Taken five qian daily, the chronic ailment gradually improved.
