Yang (Male/Female) In autumn, experienced choking cough, especially severe during the Zi and Wu hours. Coughing was violent enough to cause vomiting. Afternoon (Shen hour) brought fever, thirst, and flushed face, with irregular menstruation. This indicates the Lung affected by dryness pathogen, failing to descend properly as the branch (symptom); Metal (Lung) overcome by Fire (Heart), unable to generate Water (Kidney) as the root (cause). Treat the branch first: use moistening agents combined with salty-sinking herbs. Prescribed Xingren (Apricot Seed), Gualou Ren (Trichosanthes Seed), Suzi (Perilla Fruit), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Baihe (Lily Bulb). After three doses, cough and vomiting ceased, appetite returned, and deficient fire subsided. Subsequently, use Yanwo (Swallow's Nest) to clear-nourish Lung Qi, then Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill) ingredients added with Baishao (White Peony Root), Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry), Dancai (Edible Seaweed), boiled into a paste, collected with honey into pills. Cured.
Zhang (Male/Female) Postpartum wind-cold cough, ineffective treatment with mild acrid-dispersing agents. Changed to Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin), Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Lushen (Codonopsis Radix), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Licorice Root), Tian Xingren (Sweet Apricot Seed) stir-fried and ground. One dose brought relief. Thus, it is known that Jupi (Tangerine Peel), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Chuanxiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome), Zisu (Perilla Leaf) should be used cautiously in deficiency constitutions.
Clansman Dry cough without phlegm. While lying down, felt Qi rushing up from Dantian (Lower Abdomen/Kidney area), causing continuous coughing. Must sit up to find slight relief. This indicates Qi Hai (Sea of Qi/Dantian) failing to grasp Qi. Pulse: Right Chi pulse slightly large. Kidney Yang prone to hyperactivity. During sleep, Lung Qi dares not descend to interact with Kidney. Prolonged, this becomes the onset of asthma. Crucial to quickly secure the root. Sancai Guben Wan (Three-Capacity Root-Securing Pill) effective. Note: Lung governs Qi, but Qi roots in Dantian (Kidney region). Thus Lung and Kidney are Mother-Child organs. Only when Kidney Water controls Heart Fire can Fire not punish Metal. Dongguandong (Tian/Mai Dong) clears Lung heat; Dihuang (Shu/Sheng Di) benefits Kidney water; Renshen (Ginseng) supplements Yuan Qi. Qi is the mother of Water.
Mao (Male/Female) Elderly chronic cough. From autumn to winter, aversion to cold, reduced appetite, insipid taste, weak pulse lacking strength. Syndrome of Spleen and Lung both injured, insufficient Middle Qi. Should support Spleen Yang to generate Lung Metal. Prescribed Lushen (Codonopsis Radix), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Zhigancao (Honey-fried Licorice), Shanyao (Dioscorea Rhizome), Huangqi (Astragalus Root), Paojiang (Prepared Ginger), Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry), Hongzao (Jujube), Hulian (Nelumbo Seed). Several doses led to gradual recovery.
Hong (Male/Female) Winter dry cough, worst at midnight. Doctor used Xingren (Apricot Seed), Gualou (Trichosanthes), Jupi (Tangerine Peel), Jiang (Ginger), Sangbai (Mulberry Root Bark), etc., resulting in unceasing shortness of breath. Pulse: Both Chi pulses洪 (Surging) and large. This indicates Yang failing to submerge, Metal fearing Fire scorching. Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) minus Yuzhuyu (Cornus Fruit), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), plus Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry), Baihe (Lily Bulb), Baishao (White Peony Root). Gradually recovered. If treating only the Lung, prolongation leads to Shang Sun (Upper Damage/TB-like condition). Must strengthen Water to control Dragon Fire hyperactivity, so cough calms naturally.
Zhong (Male/Female) Middle-aged Liver-Kidney Yin deficiency, Chi pulse hyperactive, night fever with cough. Medical treatment for months: some attributed cough to fluid retention in Lung, others to external cold pathogen. Progressed to dizziness, vertigo, dry mouth, lower Yuan weakness. Recently aversion to cold, reduced food intake, sallow complexion, soles of feet burning like烙 (branding iron). Pulse/symptom analysis: Likely caused by seminal emission injuring Essence, gradually forming Lao Sou (Consumptive Cough). Now fearful of cold, food tastes bland. Prevent Yin injury affecting Yang, delaying to Xia Sun (Lower Damage) affecting Zhong (Middle). Liuwei Tang using Chao Shudi (Stir-fried Rehmannia), plus Renshen (Ginseng), Wuweizi (Schisandra), Beimu (Fritillaria), Lianzi (Lotus Seed). Seven doses: heat reduced, cough lightened. Then Liuwei Tang minus Yuzhuyu (Cornus), Zexie (Alisma), plus Shihu (Dendrobium), Maidong (Ophiopogon), Beimu (Fritillaria), Wuweizi (Schisandra), Lushen (Codonopsis), Lianzi (Lotus Seed). Decocted several doses, then followed with pills: previous herbs plus Yubiao (Fish Maw), Dancai (Seaweed), honey pills. Cured.
Mao (Male/Female) Chronic cough worse at night, morning expectoration of old sour phlegm. Pulse: Right Xu/Ruo (Deficient/Soft), Left Fu/Chang (Floating/Long). Resembles Wood Qi penetrating Diaphragm attacking Lung. Caused by arm pain, drinking Guiji/Zhuchuanwu (Cinnamon Twig/Sichuan Aconite) medicinal wine. Lung is delicate organ, cannot tolerate acrid-hot nature. Choking cough worsened, asthma and upward Qi rush. This is "treating disease adding disease." Principle: Acrid-moistening main, Sour-astringent assistant. Classic says: "Lung dislikes Qi rebellion, tonify with Sour, drain with Acrid." Qingfei Yin (Clear-Lung Drink) minus Jiegeng (Platycodon), plus Baishao (White Peony), Suzi (Perilla Fruit), Sangbai (Mulberry Root Bark, honey-fried). Several doses: phlegm/cough thinned, asthma settled, but poor appetite. Use Pei Tu Sheng Jin (Nourish Earth to Generate Metal) method. Remove Sangbai, Wuweizi. Add Shanyao (Dioscorea), Yimi (Coix Seed, stir-fried), Lushen (Codonopsis), Fushen (Poria), Lianzi (Lotus Seed), Zhigancao (Honey-fried Licorice), Nanzao (Southern Jujube), Jingmi (Rice). Decocted several doses: appetite improved.
Wang's Child Autumn coolness, wind invasion, night fever, paroxysmal barking cough. Lying down causes sitting up, bending waist immediately. Shortness of breath, foaming saliva, sweating, rattling phlegm. Wind pathogen invaded Feishu (BL13), bound by new coolness, Phlegm-Qi obstruction. Method: Acrid-disperse pathogen, Bitter-descend rebellion. Jiegeng (Platycodon), Zisu (Perilla), Xingren (Apricot Seed), Qianhu (Peucedanum), Juhong (Tangerine Red Peel), Danjiang (Light Ginger). Heat/cough reduced. Surgeon thought Autumn Dryness, used Shengdi (Rehmannia), Wuweizi (Schisandra), Baishao (White Peony), Beimu (Fritillaria). I said: Wind stored in Lung, can it be astringed? Phlegm blocking Qi, can it be cloying-moistening? Even single cup Ginger Juice, warm drink works. Frequent spoon-feeding cured.
Li (Male/Female) Spring warmth, Phlegm-Fire congesting Lung. Night cough with upward Qi, unable to lie on pillow, mental confusion. Pulse Floating/Surging, Tongue Crimson, dry mouth, red urine. Treatment: Regulate Taiyin (Lung), assist removing irritability. Xingren (Apricot Seed), Gualou Ren (Trichosanthes Seed), Jiegeng (Platycodon), Beimu (Fritillaria), Douchi (Fermented Soybean), Shanzhi (Gardenia), Lianqiao (Forsythia), Pipaye (Loquat Leaf), Zhezhijie (Sugarcane Juice). Two doses: cough thinned, slept. Due to guest fatigue/spirit consumption, Heart Ying (Nutrient) damaged. Added Yangying Anshen (Nourish Ying Calm Spirit): Shengdi (Rehmannia), Baihe (Lily Bulb), Zaoren (Jujube Seed), Xingren (Apricot Seed), Fushen (Poria), Beimu (Fritillaria), Shashen (Glehnia), Gancao (Licorice). Two doses: spirit calm, Stomach Yin restored, expected better appetite. Later, internal family conflict caused Qi stagnation generating Phlegm. Changed to Wendan Tang (Warm Gallbladder Decoction). Cured.
Wu's Niece Age 14, dry cough, rapid pulse, red cheeks, night fever no sweat. Deficient Yang rising, Lung Metal scorched.若不 (If not) nourishing Source of Transformation, Yin daily dries, damage root潜伏 (latent). Menarche not yet arrived, frequent leukorrhea. Confirmed True Yuan insecure. Used Lushen (Codonopsis), Shanyao (Dioscorea), Fushen (Poria) to support Spleen Yuan; Baishao (White Peony), Mudanpi (Moutan) to drain Yin Fire; Tian Xingren (Sweet Apricot), Baihe (Lily) stop cough; Wuweizi (Schisandra), Hezi (Chebula) astringe Lung; Zhigancao (Licorice), Hongzao (Jujube) harmonize Middle/Nourish Ying. One dose: cough lightened. Added Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia), Shihu (Dendrobium): steaming heat retreated. Then remove Baihe, Hezi, Shihu. Add Qianshi (Euryale Seed), Lianzi (Lotus Seed), honey pills. Regular use effective.
Mi (Male/Female) Sixty years old, history of bleeding. This winter warmth with deficiency, Phlegm-cough Qi obstruction. Cough causes hypochondriac pain, sweating, heat/irritability, dry mouth, intermittent pulse. Doctor used dispersing drugs, Phlegm-cough worsened. Another doctor used Chao Zhu (Stir-fried Atractylodes), Banxia (Pinellia), Houpo (Magnolia Bark), Chaihu (Bupleurum). I said: Zhu/Ban are守 (retaining) and dry; Hou/Chai are warm and ascending. Contraindicated here. Constitution is Yin deficient, warming promotes dryness. Should use Acrid-Moistening to benefit Lung Qi for peace. Xingren (Apricot Seed), Gualou (Trichosanthes), Beimu (Fritillaria), Sangbai (Mulberry Root Bark, honey-fried), Chuanpi (Tangerine Peel), Chaihu (Dendrobium - *Note: Text says 钗斛 which is Chaihu/Shihu variant*), Qianhu (Peucedanum), Chifuling (Red Poria). One dose: peaceful sleep, cough gone 80-90%, hypochondriac pain reduced, pulse harmonized. Then Yanwo Soup decocting Lushen (Codonopsis), Fushen (Poria), Xingren (Apricot Seed), Beimu (Fritillaria), Shanyao (Dioscorea), Gualou (Trichosanthes), Sangbai (Mulberry Root Bark). Further doses: more comfortable, free movement.
Grandnephew Fatigue/Internal Injury cough. Used Jie (Platycodon), Su (Perilla), Xuanfu (Inula) formulas, disease worsened. Pulse Small/Rapid. Right Chi slightly large. Yin deficiency causing cough. Avoid exterior-dispersing. Wuweizi (Schisandra), Tian Xingren (Sweet Apricot), Baishao (White Peony), Beimu (Fritillaria), Lushen (Codonopsis), Gouqi (Goji), Fuling (Poria), Lianzi (Lotus Seed), Zao (Jujube). Two doses: cough reduced. Three more doses: added Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia), Shanyao (Dioscorea). Chi pulse converged.
Li (Male/Female) Winter Yang fails to submerge, Dragon Flame disturbs/scorches Lung. Choking cough with blood, severe at night. Youthful shortness of breath, Deficient/Rapid pulse, fearful cold, night fever. Consumption/Qi deficiency established. Likely reading caused Yang rising, nocturnal emissions during sleep. Heart-Kidney non-interaction, Essence gate insecure. Insipid taste, reduced appetite. Lower damage affecting Spleen. No logic for simple clearing-cough/phlegm treatment. Yanwo (Swallow's Nest) clear-nourishment, hoping cough stops/phlegm clears. Fear early spring Qi interaction, fearful cold will increase, how can cough reduce? Benefit Spleen/Lung, connect Heart/Kidney, regulate properly. Cold/heat stop, choking cough calms. Lushen (Codonopsis), Shanyao (Dioscorea), Fushen (Poria), Sheng Huangqi Pi (Raw Astragalus Peel), Sangbai (Mulberry Root Bark, honey-fried), Tian Xingren (Sweet Apricot), Wuweizi (Schisandra), Pipaye (Loquat Leaf), Lianzi (Lotus Seed), Zaoren (Jujube Seed), Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin), Longgu (Dragon Bone). Several doses: cough reduced, cold stopped, phlegm/blood lost. Remove Pipaye, Longgu, Ejiao. Add Chao Shudi (Stir-fried Rehmannia), Mudanpi (Moutan). Heat gradually retreated. Subsequently: Lushen (Codonopsis), Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia), Shanyao (Dioscorea), Fushen (Poria), Yuanzhi (Polygala), Huangqi (Astragalus, honey-fried), Longgu (Dragon Bone), Baishao (White Peony), Zaoren (Jujube Seed), Wuweizi (Schisandra), Longyanrou (Longan Aril) boiled into paste. Two supplies fully cured.
