For patients with blood loss, a rapid (Shu), large (Da), and forceful pulse indicates hyperactivity of Yang heat; a choppy (Se) and fine (Xi) pulse indicates deficiency of blood; a fine and rapid pulse indicates depression of Yin fire within the blood; a boggy (Kou) pulse, hollow like a green onion stalk, signifies blood loss; a wiry (Xian) and tight (Jin) pulse accompanied by hypochondriac pain indicates stagnation of blood. A large pulse at the Cun position and a faint pulse at the Chi position indicate latent fire in the Lungs; an excessive pulse at the Chi position and a deficient pulse at the Cun position indicate rising Yin fire due to Kidney deficiency; a slippery (Hua) and rapid (Ji) pulse at the Chi position indicates blood deficiency with internal heat; a deficient and large pulse on the Right side indicates Fire in the Spleen and Stomach; a rapid and excessive pulse on the Left side indicates Fire in the Liver and Gallbladder. If the pulse in blood loss is weak, small, and harmonious, it is easy to treat; if the pulse is flooding (Hong), rapid, excess-large, wiry-tight, or if it is small but feels hard and sharp like touching a blade upon deep pressure, or if there is epistaxis with body heat, a pulsating pulse, hematemesis with chest fullness radiating to the back, or a small and rapid pulse, these are all difficult to treat or incurable. Coughing up white blood resembling flesh or lung tissue, light red in color, indicates a fatal prognosis; wheezing cough with blood loss, rebellious Qi, a wiry-tight-fine-rapid pulse, heat, and inability to lie flat indicate a fatal prognosis. Vomiting or spitting blood with a fine-weak pulse suggests survival, whereas a solid-large pulse suggests death.
