Patient Bao: Asthma attacks every ten days, coughing with phlegm worse at night, pulse indicates deficiency-cold. Previously treated with Liuwang Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) to nourish yin, which was inappropriate and ineffective. It is proposed to treat deficiency asthma by supplementing middle qi, using Lushen (Codonopsis Radix), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber), Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), Yuzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fried), Xingren (Prunus Seed), Wei Jiang (Baked Ginger). Effective after several doses.
A child: Long-term asthma in winter and spring, unresponsive to treatments for wind-phlegm. Pulse diagnosis revealed weak spleen unable to transform milk dampness. Prescribed Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) plus Yiyiren (Coicis Semen), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Guya (Milii Germens), all stir-fried, and Zhi Banxia (Prepared Pinelliae Tuber). Cured after several doses.
Mrs. Tang: Chronic asthma flaring in autumn, with cough, vomiting, and shortness of breath; summer-dampness obstructed by new cold pathogen. Should use acrid-p平和 dispersing method, using Jupi Banxia Tang (Tangerine Peel and Pinellia Decoction) plus Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Xiangbei (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus), Xingren (Prunus Seed), Fuling (Poria), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Xiangru (Elsholtziae Herba), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger). Calmed after several doses.
Mr. Wang: Zhu Danxi treated asthma focusing on phlegm, often inducing vomiting and avoiding cooling agents, considering it "cold wrapping heat." This patient has had a chronic root since youth, flaring in midsummer, with shortness of breath, sweating upon coughing, inability to lie flat, weak pulse, and large beating left chi pulse. Unable to tolerate induced vomiting due to labor injury. Temporarily prescribed calming qi and dispersing phlegm; after asthma and cough subside, true yuan will be secured. First, Sangbaipi Tang (Morus Bark Decoction) without Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber), using Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex, honey-fried), Tian Xingren (Sweet Prunus Seed, stir-fried and ground), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Suzi (Perillae Fructus, stir-fried and ground), Bo Juhong (Thin Tangerine Peel). After several doses, take Shengmai San (Generating Pulse Powder), Lushen (Codonopsis Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), plus Haifushi (Aragonitum), Hai Piaoxiao (Sepiae Endoconcha), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), Fuling (Poria).
Witch Woman: Chronic asthma frequently recurring during plum rain season, with excessive phlegm, wheezing, and coughing, clearly indicating damp-phlegm郁 heat obstructed by cold pathogen. Temporarily used Modified Mahuang Tang (Modified Ephedra Decoction) to warm and disperse. Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 3 fen), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 5 fen), Xingren (Prunus Seed, 2 qian), Suye (Perillae Folium), Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber, prepared, each 1 qian 5 fen), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 1 qian), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, 8 fen), Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice, 3 spoons). After two doses, subsequently used descending qi and dispersing phlegm: Gualoupi (Trichosanthis Pericarpium), Sangpi (Mori Cortex, both stir-fried, each 1 qian), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Xingren (Prunus Seed, both stir-fried and ground, each 2 qian), Haifushi (Aragonitum, 3 qian), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus, each 8 fen), Suzi (Perillae Fructus, stir-fried and ground, 6 fen), Fuling (Poria, 2 qian), Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice, 3 spoons). Asthma and cough eliminated after several doses.
