All wind-induced tremors and dizziness belong to Liver Wood.
"Tiao" refers to shaking or trembling. "Xuan" refers to vertigo, confusion, and a sensation of spinning. This is because the nature of Wind is movement. When excessive Wind causes dizziness and vertigo in the head and eyes, it is due to the exuberance of Liver Wood. This inevitably implies that Metal (Lung) is deficient and unable to control Wood, leading Wood to generate Fire. Both Wind and Fire belong to Yang; they often transform into one another. Since Yang governs movement, the collision of two moving forces results in rotation. Thus, Fire inherently possesses motion; when flames encounter Wind, they naturally rotate. For instance, from the Spring Equinox to the Beginning of Summer (Xiaoman), this is the second Qi phase, corresponding to the position of Ministerial Fire. From Great Cold (Dahan) to the Spring Equinox, spanning seventy-three days, is the first Qi phase, corresponding to the position of Wind Wood. Therefore, after the Spring Equinox, the interaction between Wind and Fire frequently generates whirlwinds, commonly known as cyclones, which occur throughout the four seasons. Due to the myriad changes of the Five Movements and Six Qis, with their surging impacts and endless derivations, how can one claim their absence merely because they do not manifest at a specific time? There are only degrees of severity. If a person experiences vertigo while riding in a carriage, on horseback, in a boat, or while dancing in circles, it is because their movement is not straight but rather winding and curved. Hence, the *Classic* states: "Bending and stretching, shaking and moving—these are the functions of Wind." Vertigo accompanied by vomiting is caused by excessive Wind-Heat.
All pain, itching, sores, and ulcers belong to Heart Fire.
When people approach fire, slight heat causes itching, intense heat causes pain, and close proximity causes burning and the formation of sores; all these are manifestations of Fire. Itching and pain resembling light needle pricks are akin to being scorched by flying sparks. Itching is considered a milder pathological state. Thus, Fire is prosperous in summer, causing all things to grow luxuriantly and beautifully. If applying heat via moxibustion or soaking in hot water exacerbates itching, it is due to the effect of slight heat. Conversely, if itching subsides, it is because heat relaxes the skin, opens the interstices (Couli), allows Yang Qi to dissipate, and thus the heat scatters and departs. In cases where summer skin itching persists despite washing with cold water, it is because Cold has a contracting nature, closing the interstices and causing Yang Qi to stagnate internally without dispersing, thereby generating constrained Heat within. Scratching provides relief because scratching generates frictional heat (Fire transformation); mildly, it may induce itching, but severely, it relieves itching because the resulting sensation is pungent/spicy, belonging to the Metal transformation. Pungency promotes dispersion; thus, when Metal characteristics appear, the Fire energy divides and resolves. Some argue that pain indicates Excess and itching indicates Deficiency; however, this does not mean Deficiency equates to Cold, but rather refers to the intensity of Heat. One might question why sores and ulcers, attributed to Fire-Heat, sometimes rot and discharge pus and fluid. This is analogous to flesh, bone, fruit, or vegetables: when subjected to extreme heat, they rot, ulcerate, and turn into foul liquid. Ulceration and putrefaction represent the transformation of Water. The principle of the Five Elements dictates that when a force reaches an extreme, the element that controls it counteracts it. Therefore, when Fire-Heat reaches an extreme, it may exhibit characteristics of Water transformation. Similarly, salt preserves objects and prevents rotting because its salty-cold Water nature suppresses Fire-Heat, preventing it from reaching extremes, thus ensuring longevity. This applies to all things.
