Various swellings and fullness caused by dampness all belong to Spleen Earth.
The substance of the earth is Earth. When heat becomes extremely abundant, it causes obstruction, swelling, and fullness; this is also true for objects that become wet. Therefore, the late summer season belongs to Earth, at which time myriad things flourish abundantly.
Various Qi stagnations, depressions, and flaccidity syndromes all belong to Lung Metal.
"Man" refers to chest oppression and fullness. "Yu" refers to the rushing and pressing sensation of Qi. "Wei" refers to flaccidity and weakness of the limbs, with insufficient strength for movement. Generally speaking, the Lung governs Qi. Qi belongs to Yang, and Yang governs lightness, clarity, and ascending. Thus, the Lung resides in the upper jiao. When diseased, its Qi becomes obstructed and rushes upward without being able to ascend properly, leading to flaccidity and weakness of the limbs, unable to grasp or support. This occurs because Lung Metal is inherently dry; disease caused by dryness results from a deficiency of blood and fluids, which fail to nourish the entire body. The Classic states: "Fingers can grasp when they receive blood; palms can grip when they receive blood; feet can walk when they receive blood." Therefore, when Autumn Metal Qi is vigorous, mist becomes dense and stagnant, causing grass and trees to wither and fall; this is the manifestation of disease. "Wither" (Wei) is similar in meaning to "flaccidity" (Wei).
Various contractions and pullings caused by cold all belong to Kidney Water.
Contraction and pulling/tightness are the functions/actions of Cold. Thus, during the cold of winter, the body becomes contracted and shriveled.
Various sudden cases of rigidity and stiffness, pain in the joints/limbs, twisting of sinews, internal urgency, and shortening of tendons all belong to Wind. (Jueyin Wind-Wood corresponds to the Qi of the Liver and Gallbladder).
"Bao" means sudden or violent. "Qiang" means strong, powerful, and not soft/flexible. "Zhi" means sinews are rigid and strong. "Zhi tong" refers to supporting firmly; sinews are cramped, inflexible, and painful. "Ruan li": "Ruan" means contraction/shrinking; "Li" means deviant or contrary. It refers to diseases where sinews contract, there is internal urgency, and normal function is deviated. However, Dry Metal governs tightness, contraction, shortening, and sharpness. When Wind-Wood causes disease, it may instead manifest the transformation of Dry Metal, due to the principle that excess leads to harm, requiring restraint to maintain balance. Moreover, Wind can overcome Dampness and transform into Dryness. There are also cases in the tenth month where severe Wind disease leads to flaccid sinews, which is an extreme manifestation of Dryness. Therefore, severe Wind diseases often combine with Dryness.
Various diseases such as wheezing, vomiting, acid regurgitation, sudden diarrhea, tenesmus, muscle cramps (turning of tendons), turbid urine, abdominal distension large and drum-like upon percussion, carbuncles, ulcers, sores, rashes, tumor masses, nodules, cholera with vomiting and diarrhea, mental confusion, Qi depression/stagnation, swelling, nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, epistaxis, hemorrhage, hematochezia, strangury, [text missing], fever with aversion to cold, shivering, fright, bewilderment, sadness, inappropriate laughter, delirium, mania, epistaxis, contempt, bloody sweat, all belong to Heat. (The Heat of Ministerial Fire of Hand-Shaoyin corresponds to the Qi of the True Heart and Small Intestine).
