It is stated that human life depends on the essence of the five grains, which transforms the flavors to nourish the body, thereby generating the physical form. The Classics state: "Flavors nourish the form." If flavors are damaged or imbalanced, they can also injure the form. Currently, diet often exceeds moderation; the intestines and stomach cannot bear it, and Qi is insufficient for transformation, thus causing injury. The Classics state: "Excessive Fire consumes Qi, while Qi feeds upon Mild Fire; Excessive Fire scatters Qi, whereas Mild Fire generates Qi." The *Bi Lun* (Treatise on Bi Syndrome) states: "If food and drink exceed by double, the intestines and stomach will be injured." Or, failing to follow seasonal regulation, one becomes diseased. The Classics state: "A tight pulse at the Qi Kou indicates injury from food; fullness in the chest and heart with a tasteless mouth corresponds to this pulse at the Qi Kou." The Qi Kou pulse is an external manifestation of the Spleen; therefore, when the Spleen and Stomach are injured, the Qi Kou pulse becomes tight and vigorous. Such injuries vary in degree and severity. If the Qi Kou pulse is one-fold stronger than normal, with six beats per respiration, the injury affects the Jueyin Meridian, representing a mild injury, treated primarily with *Binglang Wan* (Areca Nut Pill). If the Qi Kou pulse is two-fold stronger, with seven beats per respiration, the injury affects the Shaoyin Meridian, representing a heavier injury, treated with *Zhuhuang Wan* (Boiled Realgar Pill) and *Noupo Wan* (Magnolia Bark Pill). If the Qi Kou pulse is three-fold stronger, with eight beats per respiration, the injury affects the Taiyin Meridian, presenting as chest blockage and confusion, severe epigastric and gastric pain, nausea with desire to vomit, relief after vomiting, commonly known as "Food Intoxication Wind" (Shi Mi Feng). The Classics state: "When there is a pulse above but none below, the person should vomit; if not, death ensues." It is appropriate to induce vomiting using *Gua Di San* (Melon Sepal Powder). If vomiting cannot occur, there is no treatment. The Classics state: "For pathogenic factors high in location, use the method of evacuation upwards (vomiting); for those low in location, guide them to exhaustion downwards (purging)." This is the principle.
