Qi and blood become knotted and fail to circulate, thus the patient's condition resembles that of a corpse. (Since this arises from Jue [reversal cold/loss of consciousness], it is sometimes called Shi Jue [Corpse Jue].) Puncture the medial side of the big toe, at the corner of the nail, approximately as wide as a leek leaf from the end. (This refers to Yinbai [SP1], the Jing-Well point of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Insert one fen deep, retain for three breaths, moxa three zhu.) Subsequently puncture the sole of the foot. (This refers to Yongquan [KI1], the Jing-Well point of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. The puncturing method is the same as that for Yongquan.) Subsequently puncture each of the nails on the middle toe of the foot once. (This refers to the second toe, which corresponds to the Jing-Well point of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian; the puncturing method is the same as that for Lidui [ST45].) Subsequently puncture the medial side of the thumb, approximately as wide as a leek leaf from the end. (This refers to Shaoshang [LU11], the Jing-Well point of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Insert one fen deep, retain for three breaths, moxa three zhu.) Subsequently puncture the Pericardium Meridian of the Hand-Jueyin. (This refers to Zhongchong [PC9], the Jing-Well point of the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian. Insert one fen deep, retain for three breaths, moxa one zhu. Note: The New Corrections state: "The *Jia Yi Jing* does not mention puncturing the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium. Examining the count of these five collaterals, it also does not include the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium, yet here it is punctured, resulting in six collaterals. Wang Bing followed and annotated this without clear differentiation, which is quite strange.") And puncture each end of the sharp bone of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian once. (This refers to Shenmen [HT7], located in the depression at the end of the styloid process of the ulna, the Shu-Stream point of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Insert three fen deep, retain for three breaths, moxa three zhu.) Effect will be immediate. If there is no improvement, blow air into both ears using a bamboo tube. (This means to introduce air into the ears to internally assist the Qi of the five collaterals, allowing the Qi to flow freely again. One should insert the tube into the ear, seal it tightly with the hand to prevent leakage, and blow forcefully until the Qi becomes compressed, thereby unblocking the collateral vessels. Note: The New Corrections state: "Tao Hongjing said: 'Blow forcefully into the left ear three times, then forcefully into the right ear three times.' This is an excellent method for treating Jue.") Burn and powder one square cun of hair from the left corner of the head, and drink it down with one cup of fine wine. If the patient cannot drink, force-feed it. Effect will be immediate. (Hair from the left corner of the head is the surplus of blood from the five collaterals; hence it is burned and powdered, and taken with fine wine. Wine is used to promote the action of medicine; its nature is ascending and it enters the Heart internally. Since the Heart governs the vessels, fine wine is used to administer it. Note: "Fan" is synonymous with "fen," meaning to shave or cut hair with a knife.) In all cases of acupuncture, first observe the meridians, palpate and follow their course, carefully assess their excess or deficiency, and regulate them accordingly. If they remain unregulated, use Jing-Meridian needling. If there is pain but the meridian itself shows no pathological signs, use Miao-Stimulation (Miao Ci). Simultaneously, observe the skin regions for any blood collaterals and puncture them all to release blood. This is the principle of Miao-Stimulation.
