The Spleen disease presents with a sallow complexion, frequent belching (Yi), pain around the umbilicus, abdominal distension and fullness, indigestion, heavy body sensation with joint pain, lethargy and desire to lie down, and weakness of the four limbs unable to hold objects.
The Lung disease primarily presents with a pale complexion, frequent sneezing, sadness and melancholy, desire to cry, pain on the right side of the umbilicus. Pathological manifestations include wheezing and coughing, and aversion to cold with shivering (Sa Xi) alternating with fever.
The Kidney disease primarily presents with a dark complexion, fearfulness, pain below the umbilicus, cold extremities (Jue Ni), acute pain in the lower abdomen, diarrhea with a sensation of heaviness in the rectum, cold feet, and frequent rebellious Qi (Qi Ni).
When Jueyin Wind Wood Qi arrives, Earth suffers disaster. The people suffer from multiple diseases; Water fails to arrive. Symptoms include heart pain, fullness in the stomach region and hypochondrium, and obstruction and closure of the throat, making it difficult to open.
When Taiyin Damp Earth Qi prevails according to the season, the people suffer from headache and bone Bi syndrome. Symptoms include stiffness of the neck, low back pain resembling fracture, and thigh pain resembling fracture. These are all due to the lack of smooth flow in the Kidneys.
When Shaoyin Ministerial Fire Qi descends upon the body, the people suffer from mental restlessness, frequent dry retching, hypochondriac pain, headache, occasional cough and wheezing, aversion to cold, confusion and oppression, palpitations, and fright.
When Shaoyang Ministerial Fire Qi governs Heaven (Si Tian), the year dominated by its overcoming element sees Heart disease first. Symptoms include chest fullness, epistaxis, hypochondriac distension, wheezing, coughing, and abdominal distension, characteristic of Fire pathology in that year.
When Yangming Dry Metal Qi overcomes, Wood suffers disaster. Symptoms include dull headache, injury to the left hypochondrium. In men, tendons are injured leading to floating edema; in women, abdominal pain and mental mania occur.
Taiyin Cold Water brings disaster to the Heart. The people suffer from headache, alternating chills and fever, abdominal pain, elbow contracture, acute tendon pain, yellowish complexion, dry throat, dry mouth, and restlessness.
\rOld Chart of the 72 Pentads\pt166a22.bmp\r
Calculating from the first day of the first month of the Jiazi year in the 12th year of Kaiyuan (Jiyou New Moon), accumulating to the 4th year of Mingchang in the current era, a total of 470 years have passed. Subtract one, multiply by the Solar Year (365.25 days), and divide by the respective fraction, obtaining 171,299 days, 24 fen, and 84 miao. Remove the Heavenly Cycle base, designate Jiyou as the starting point, and calculate outward to find the Wushen day as the Jiaosi (transition) day and its fractions (subtract multiples of sixty). There is an external blank. Place the Dashu (Major Cold) solar term at 59 days, 24 fen, and 84 miao. Add the Houce (pentad measure) of 5 days, 7 fen, and 28 miao. Discard amounts reaching sixty. For example, if Dashu in the Guichou year transitions: 59 days, 24 fen, 84 miao plus 5 days, 7 fen, 28 miao equals 64 days, 32 fen, 12 miao. Designating Jiyou as the start yields the Guichou day. This corresponds to the pentad "Vicious Birds Act Fiercely" (Zhi Nuo Li Ji). The Major Cold Qi descends, and chickens begin to incubate eggs. "Vicious Birds Act Fiercely" refers to the fifth day after Major Cold.
The Classic states: What is Qi? Qibo replied: It is kept secret by the Supreme Lord and transmitted by former masters. Five days constitute one pentad (Hou); three pentads constitute one Qi (Solar Term segment); six Qis constitute one Season (Shi); four Seasons constitute one Year (Sui). One Year is called one Period (Qi); four Periods constitute one Small Cycle; fifteen Small Cycles constitute one Great Cycle, which is sixty years. All these numbers are governed by Nine and Six. Thus, the Classic says "Six-Six Sections and Nine-Nine Convergence" are used to correct the degrees of Heaven and the count of Qi. The Degrees of Heaven regulate the movement of the Sun and Moon; the Count of Qi governs the functions of generation and transformation. Heaven is Yang, Earth is Yin; Sun is Yang, Moon is Yin. Movement refers to the division and recording of cycles. The cycle has principles: the Sun moves one degree per day; the Moon moves thirteen degrees and a fraction per day. Thus, large and small months sum to 365 days, curving to form one year, accumulating the surplus of Qi to fill and moisten. However, within day and night, the Sun moves one degree in Heaven, and the Moon moves thirteen degrees and nineteen fen afterwards. (This method is recorded in the section on acupuncture tonification and sedation, originating from the *Ba Zheng Shen Ming Lun*.) The Five Planets belong to Earth but follow the celestial sphere moving to the right. Facing South, they turn East; facing North, they move West. Thus, it is said that Heaven follows Earth rotating to the Left, and Earth receives Heaven moving to the Right. This means the Sun moves slowly and the Moon moves quickly.
In one Solar Year of 365 days, the Sun moves one degree per day, completing one circuit of Heaven in a year. The Moon moves thirteen degrees and a fraction per day, completing one circuit of Heaven in 29 days. At this point, the Sun has only moved 29 degrees. Compared to the Moon, the Moon has already completed one circuit of 365 degrees, plus an additional 22 degrees of Heaven, falling short by 7 degrees compared to the Sun. Adding half a day brings them into the same palace, forming one lunar month. The *Yin Yang Shuo* states: The Moon's movement has front and back, slow and fast distinctions. With a constant standard for the celestial circle, there are differences between full (Da Jin) and incomplete (Xiao Jin) months. The base is 365 and one-quarter days. Jing Pu stated: Since the celestial circle is 365 and one-quarter degrees, the Sun moves one degree per day, and the Moon moves thirteen degrees and a fraction. The Moon completes one circuit in 27 days. After another two and a half days, the Sun and Moon meet, forming one month. Calculating 29.5 degrees of the Sun, corresponding to 29.5 days in human time, totaling 29.5 degrees, together with 59 days, explains why the Moon has full and incomplete months. In one year, the Sun travels 354 degrees, calculated as 354 days in human time. The celestial circle of 365 and one-quarter degrees constitutes one human year. Now it only travels 354 degrees, calculated as 354 days. The remainder is 11 and one-quarter degrees, counting as 11 days and three double-hours (Chenxi). Therefore, there is a leap year every three years, a second leap every five years, and seven leaps in nineteen years to complete one Chapter (Zhang). Upon reaching eighty chapters, the numbers of waxing and waning exhaust themselves and restart.
