Background Information:
Book: Jingxue Huijie (Collected Explanations of Acupoints)
Chapter: Limbs Part IV (2/3)
Category: Acupuncture and Moxibustion
Original Text Translation:
Hong Kong Jiao (Gouty Arthritis/Podagra) initially presents with weakness in the feet. One should immediately apply moxibustion to it.
Guanyi (Acupoint): For women, pain in the vagina radiating to the epigastrium and lower abdomen, biting pain, and coldness in the five viscera. Apply 100 moxa cones to Guanyi. The acupoint is located one cun above the lateral side of the knee, in a depression. Source: Qianjin Yaofang (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold).
Commentary: "Five coldnesses" may be an error, likely referring to coldness of the five viscera.
Yingchi Four Acupoints (also known as Yinyang): For women with leukorrhea (red and white discharge), apply 30 moxa cones to the four Yingchi points. The acupoints are located in the pools anterior and posterior to the medial malleolus.
Commentary from Qianjin Yilu (Supplement to Essential Prescriptions): Reads as "pulse above the pool."
Yinyang (Acupoints): For women with leukorrhea and diarrhea, apply moxibustion to Yinyang according to the patient's age (one cone per year of age), repeated three times. The acupoints are located at the junction of white and red flesh on the dorsal aspect of the big toe, within the flexure. Source: Qianjin Yaofang. On both sides of the transverse crease are the two Yinyang acupoints. Divide the crease with the thumbs, look to both sides, and wipe to distinguish Yin and Yang. Treats abdominal distension, diarrhea, obstruction of urination and defecation, and deficiency of the viscera. Source: Mizhi (Secret Instructions).
Commentary: Qianjin Yilu agrees. Mizhi does not mention the big toe, which is likely an omission.
Huangu (Acupoint): Source: Ling Shu (Spiritual Pivot).
Commentary: Appears in the chapter "Si Shi Qi" (Four Seasons Qi). See below for explanation.
Fengshi (Wind Market): Located on the lateral aspect of both thighs. One can lean flat, let hands hang down, and cover the thigh; the tip of the middle finger indicates the location. Press on the large tendon, and it feels comfortable. Source: Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang (Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up the Sleeve). Alternatively, have the patient stand upright with arms hanging down and fingers extended, covering the thighs; mark where the central finger touches on the large tendon of the thigh. Apply 100 moxa cones; more is permissible. For mild cases, do not reduce below 100 cones; for severe cases, up to 500-600 cones at one site. Do not apply all at once; divide into three sessions. Source: Qianjin Yaofang. Standing with hands hanging down, where the middle finger tip falls between the two tendons of the thigh. Source: Wai Tai Mi Yao (Important Prescriptions Preserved from the Outer Cabinet). Seven cun above the knee, between the two lateral tendons. Source: Lei Jing (Classified Classic). From Huantiao, descending to the lateral edge above the knee. Source: Yi Zong Jin Jian (Golden Mirror of Medicine).
Commentary: The chapter "Si Shi Qi" states: For edema without swelling, first select Huangu, three cun below, using a bi needle. Ma Shi comments: According to various classics, there is no Huangu acupoint. It is only found in the depression between the muscles of the Foot Shaoyang channel, which is incorrect. Qianjin Yaofang says: For enuresis, let hands hang over the thighs; where the fingertips find a depression, apply 7 cones. This refers to Fengshi.
Xixia (Below Knee): During the third month of pregnancy, apply 7 cones one cun below the knee. Source: Qianjin Yaofang. For muscle spasms and unbearable tibial pain, apply moxibustion to the lower edge of the knee, on the transverse tendon.
Commentary from Qianjin Yilu: Reads as "lower edge when the knee is flexed."
Kexwai (Lateral Knee): For treating sores, on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month at noon, apply moxibustion to the lateral knee, bending the foot, at the head of the crease, according to age. Apply to both sites simultaneously.
Nvxqi (Woman's Knee): Also known as Zhangmu (Mother-in-law), Nvxu (Woman's Beard), Nvx [missing character]. Source: Guixin Zashi (Records of Guixin). Located behind the heel. Same source.
Commentary from Zhou Mi's Guixin Zashi: Liu Hanqing suffered from alveolar periostitis. After a long time, his jaw perforated, with pus and blood dripping. Doctors were ineffective. In Weiyang, there was an official named Qiu from Yidu, skilled in acupuncture. He treated Hanqing by needling Weizhong and Nvxqi. That night, the pus and blood stopped. Ten days later, using this method, the jaw bone shed and new bone grew. Later, Zhang Shidao also suffered from this condition and was cured by needling with this method, which is puzzling. Qiu once treated polydipsia by having the patient drink wine yeast soup, resulting in a cure. All these outcomes were unexpected. Weizhong is in the popliteal fossa; Nvxqi is at the heel. Folklore says "Zhangmu" treats abdominal pain by moxibustion on Nvx [missing character] at the heel, which is confused. This is indeed Nvxqi. However, classical moxibustion texts do not list this acupoint. It is also called Nvxu.
Juyang (Great Yang): For lower back pain, apply 7 cones to Juyang of the foot. Juyang is below the lateral malleolus. Source: Qianjin Yaofang.
Foot Taiyang (Bladder Channel): Also known as Guilu (Ghost Road). For retained placenta, needle Foot Taiyang, inserting 4 fen, one cun behind the lateral malleolus, in a depression. Source: Qianjin Yaofang. For heavy body, edema, reluctance to sit or rise, wind-labor leg pain, apply 50 cones to Chitaiyang. Needle insert 3 fen, tonify. Source: Qianjin Yilu.
Commentary: Juyang and Taiyang share the same meaning but should not be merged into one; keep both for future reference. Qianjin Yaofang says: For mania, epilepsy, and ghostly speech, apply 40 cones to Foot Taiyang. Qianjin Yilu says: Foot Taiyang is named Guilu. Qianjin Yaofang's Thirteen Ghost Acupoints note for Guilu: Shenmai, Foot Taiyang. Is it Shenmai? Qianjin Yilu's character "Chi" (Ruler) is likely a typo for "Zu" (Foot).
Shenxi (Kidney Connection): For polydipsia and frequent urination. Yinshi has two locations: above Futu on the knee, ascending 3 cun, near the knee. Or apply 2-3 rows of moxibustion, spaced one cun apart. Named Shenxi. Note: Huangdi Jing says: 2 cun below Futu. Source: Qianjin Yaofang.
Hua Tuo: Treats acute hernia in men with unilateral enlargement of the scrotum. Select the patient's big toe, 5 fen from the nail, at the medial junction of white and red flesh. Source: Mingtang Jing (Illustrated Manual of Acupoints and Moxibustion Points).
Commentary: Qianjin Yaofang says: For carbuncles and swellings, apply moxibustion to the center of the big toes of both feet for immediate relief. For elderly and children with fecal incontinence, apply 3 cones to both big toes, 1 cun from the nail. Also apply 3 cones to Qijian of the big toe. Cheng Jingtong says: Qijian should be Qijian. Zisheng writes Qiji, which is correct. Qianjin Yaofang also says: For ulcers, apply 14 cones (2x7) to Qijian of the big toe. For adults and children with carbuncles, apply to the center of the big toes of both feet for immediate relief, following the affected side. Generally similar to Hua Tuo's acupoint.
Transverse Crease of the Big Toe Joint: Source: Qianjin Yaofang.
Commentary: Detailed under Dadun.
Chengming (Receiving Life): For manic evil, fright, and epilepsy, apply 30 cones to Chengming. Source: Qianjin Yaofang.
Commentary: Detailed under Sanyinjiao.
Shaoyang Wei (Linking Vessel of Shaoyang): One cun behind the medial malleolus, in the moving tendon. Source: Wai Tai Mi Yao.
Commentary: "Tendon" should be "pulse."
Taiyin Qiao (Heel Vessel of Taiyin): Facing downward from below the medial malleolus, in a depression. Source: Wai Tai Mi Yao.
Taiyin (Taiyin Channel): One fu (hand breadth) above the medial malleolus. Source: Qianjin Yaofang.
Commentary: This acupoint, used for treating hernia and named Taiyin, is recorded as Zhongdu in one text and Sanyinjiao in another. Qianjin Yilu says: For breech presentation with foot protruding, needle Foot Taiyin, insert 3 fen, withdraw needle after the foot enters. The acupoint is behind the medial malleolus, at the junction of white and red flesh, in the depression of the bone. Wai Tai Mi Yao says: Two Taiyin acupoints, 8 cun above the medial malleolus, in the depression below the bone, referring to Dizhi. Should be studied together with Sanyinjiao. Wai Tai Mi Yao also says: Huangdi Sanbu Zhenjiu Jing and Tongren Xuejing do not list Shaoyin Wei, Taiyin, or Taiyin Qiao.
Jueyin (Jueyin Channel): For acute [condition missing], apply moxibustion to Foot Jueyin. If on the left, treat the right; if on the right, treat the left. 3 cones. Located between the proximal phalanx joint of the big toe. Source: Qianjin Yaofang.
Commentary: This likely refers to Dadun.
Bafeng Eight Acupoints (Da Cheng): Also known as Baxie. Source: Waike Quan Shu (Complete Book of Surgery). Located between the metatarsals of the five toes. There are eight acupoints on both feet, hence named Bafeng.
Commentary: Ling Shu says: One at each of the five toe spaces, totaling eight. The feet are the same. These are the ancestors of Hand Baxie and Foot Bafeng. Waike Quan Shu says: Foot Baxie, four acupoints between the metatarsals of the five toes on both feet. Chongyang can also be needled. (On the dorsum of the foot, opposite the middle toe near the flexion crease, same on both sides.) Examining Zhenjing, on the foot, also named Bafeng. Since Chongyang is mentioned, they should be studied together.
Qiduan (Qi End): Source: Qianjin Yaofang.
Bachong (Eight Rushes): One fen from the end of the ten toes on both feet, totaling eight acupoints. Cao named them Bachong, very effective for directing Qi downward. The ends of the ten toes are named Qiduan. Apply 3 cones daily to Qiduan and Dashen. For Bachong, apply 7 cones daily until Qi descends. Source: Qianjin Yaofang.
Commentary: Wai Tai Mi Yao quotes Su Gong: If the ten toes are sore, painful, and stifling, gradually spreading to the dorsum of the foot, apply moxibustion to the center of the toe, at the junction of nail and flesh, with 3 cones for recovery. Qianjin Yilu reads: One fen from the odd end of the ten toes.
Bahui (Eight Meetings): For manic running and cursing, apply Bahui according to age. The acupoint is 5 fen below Yangming. Source: Qianjin Yaofang.
Duyin (Unique Yin) (Da Cheng): Also known as Duhui. Source: Yi Jing Xiao Er Bao Jian (Little Essential Prescriptions for Children's Diseases). Transverse crease below the third toe. Apply for external genital swelling. Source: Yi Jing Xiao Er Bao Jian. In the transverse crease below the toe. Source: Lei Jing. Below the second toe. Source: Da Cheng.
Commentary: Da Quan says: For difficult labor in women, Duyin is Zhiyin. Lei Jing says: It is Zhiyin, likely on the little toe. Unclear. Duyin acupoint is between the fourth and fifth toes. Apply 3 cones. Mainly treats irregular menstruation. Yi Jing Xiao Er Bao Jian says: Duhui is in the middle of the transverse crease below the second toe. Also treats difficult labor. Duyin and Duhui are likely the same acupoint.
Nei Anjian (Medial Malleolus Tip): Tip of the medial malleolus bone. Source: Da Cheng.
Commentary: Qianjin Yaofang says: If tendons are tight and walking is impossible, for medial malleolus tendon tightness, apply 40 cones above the medial malleolus. For lateral malleolus tendon tightness, apply 30 cones above the lateral malleolus for immediate recovery. Also says: For masses, apply moxibustion to the depression behind the medial malleolus. For various bad leaks, internal cold, and polyps, apply moxibustion above the medial malleolus.
Wai Anjian (Lateral Malleolus Tip): For acute strangury, apply 7 cones to Wai Anjian. Source: Qianjin Yaofang. For double tongue, apply 3 cones above the lateral malleolus. Same source. Three cun above Wai Anjian.
Commentary: Moxibustion and acupuncture above the medial and lateral malleoli are very effective. Qianjin and Wai Tai record many cases. Detailed in the treatment section. Some mention the junction of white and red flesh, on blue veins. Men: 37 cones on medial malleolus; Women: 37 cones on lateral malleolus. Gang Mu quotes Dongyang: For chronic leaking sores, apply 3 to 6 cones one cun above the medial malleolus.
Tongli (Connecting Reason): Two cun above the little toe. Mainly treats uterine bleeding and excessive menstrual blood. Needle insert 2 fen, apply 14 cones (2x7). Source: Bao Jian.
Under the Big Toe Nail: For corpse-like fainting with pulse still beating, needle the medial side under the big toe nail, 3 fen from the nail. Source: Qianjin Yaofang.
Commentary: Qianjin Yaofang also says: Bian Que said: For sudden attack of evil wind, chest stuffiness, irritability, and impending death, urgently apply moxibustion to the transverse crease under the big toe according to age for immediate recovery. Now, under the big toe nail is one of the Thirteen Ghost Acupoints, Guilei, referring to Yinbai.
Guangu (Hip Bone): Above the kneecap, beside Liangqiu, opening outward one cun. Source: Lei Jing. Three cun above Weizhong, in the hip pivot, take while standing with hands hanging down. Source: Da Cheng. One cun 5 fen outward from both sides of Liangqiu, four acupoints on both feet. Source: Da Cheng.
Commentary: The three descriptions differ. Yi Jing Xiao Er Bao Jian also mentions Wanggu.
Wanggu (Wrist Bone): Four Wanggu acupoints, 1.5 cun outward from Liangqiu, for leg pain. Source: Yi Jing Xiao Er Bao Jian.
Commentary: Same location as Guangu. Gu and Wang might be a typo for one another.
Kuagu (Cross Bone): Is Liangqiu. Source: Da Cheng.
Weihui (Meeting of Links): Three cun above the lateral malleolus. This is Yuquan. Source: Da Cheng.
Commentary: Yang Jizhou says: These two explanations cannot both belong to extra-classic acupoints; keep both for experts to decide.
Qian Chengshan (Front Chengshan): For infants with backward curvature of the foot, pressing and rubbing this acupoint for a long time is effective. Source: Mizhi.
Commentary: No acupoint description, but the diagram shows it opposite Chengshan in front.
Xiedai Xue (Shoelace Acupoint): For infants with backward extension, press here. Source: Mizhi.
Commentary: No acupoint description, but the diagram shows it on the dorsum. Wai Tai Mi Yao quotes Wen Zhong: For consumption, stand at the transverse crease of the shoelace area. Use four fingers to measure the tibia from the crease; press where the middle segment of the four fingers meets the outer tibia. There is a small acupoint. Take a strand of hemp, thin it out, tie it loosely around this point, and apply moxibustion until the hemp breaks.
Shuwei (Mouse Tail): For scrofula acupoint method. Use a blade of grass. For men, compare with the left hand; for women, with the right hand. Measure across the four limbs using the transverse crease of the middle joint. At the end of the crease, compare intersections. Apply moxa cones; deeper years require more moxibustion. Also says: Ershuwei is on the large muscle of the arm. This is the acupoint. Source: Chuang Yang Jing Yan Quan Shu (Complete Book of Experience in Treating Sores and Ulcers).
Nei Kunlun (Inner Kunlun): Treats foot spasms. Needle Nei Kunlun, located in the depression behind the medial malleolus, insert 6 fen, drain when Qi arrives. Source: Qianjin Yilu.
Commentary: Qianjin Yilu also says: For hardness and fullness of the lower abdomen like a plate or bowl, chest and abdominal distension, indigestion, and women's masses with emaciation, apply moxibustion to the depression behind the medial malleolus according to age.
Shang Kunlun (Upper Kunlun): Source: Zisheng.
Xia Kunlun (Lower Kunlun): Shang Kunlun, needle 5 fen. Xia Kunlun, one cun below the lateral malleolus, under the large tendon. Source: Zisheng quoting Mingtang Jing.
Commentary: Zisheng says: Mingtang has Shang Kunlun and Xia Kunlun. Tongren only lists Kunlun and does not record Xia Kunlun. Is Tongren incomplete? Or are the names different? Upper Jing says: Nei Kunlun is one cun below the lateral malleolus. Lower Jing says: Nei Kunlun is 5 fen behind the medial malleolus. Unknown which is correct. I believe since it is called Nei Kunlun, it should be behind the medial malleolus. The acupoint in the Lower Jing, Tong Shang Kunlun, is on the lateral malleolus.
Fugui (Hidden Ghost)
Feichang (Calf Muscle)
Luxi (Deer Creek)
Commentary: The above three acupoints are recorded in Qianjin Yaofang, Chapter on Fright and Epilepsy, under fourteen moxibustion sites on the foot. Their exact locations are unclear.
Cimen (Mercy Gate): Source: Qianjin Yaofang.
Commentary: Qianjin Yaofang says: For sad crying, evil speech, ghostly busy singing and crying, apply 30 cones to Cimen. Qianjin Yilu says: For manic evil and ghostly speech, apply moxibustion to Cimen.
Xiaman (Lower Fullness): Source: Qianjin Jin Ji Pian, Qianjin Yilu Zhuan Jin Tiao.
Dayou (Great Dark): Source: Qianjin Feng Xian Pian, Qianjin Yilu same.
Huma (Hu Pulse): Source: Qianjin Yilu Za Liao Pian.
Leihu (Rib Door): For canine epilepsy, with clenched hands and contracted limbs, apply 1 cone to both palms, 1 cone to Foot Taiyang, 1 cone to Leihu. Source: Qianjin Yaofang.
Shimen (Food Gate): From Wai Tai Mi Yao, Yin Zhu Note.
Commentary: The above six acupoints have no annotations; their locations are unclear.
Quchi (Crooked Ruler): Duan Ju Fang says: Located on the dorsum of one foot, below the tibia, at the curved junction connecting the wrist, opposite the thenar eminence, in the depression between the two tendons in front of the ankle. Source: Yi Xin Fang.
Thirteen Ghost Acupoints of Bian Que
(Guigong, Guixin, Guilei, Guixin, Guilu, Guizhen, Guichuang, Guishi, Guilu, Guitang, Guicang, Guichen, Guifeng)
Qianjin Fang says: The sources of all evil diseases are diverse. They have various forms indicating the beginning of madness and evil. Some are silent, some talk excessively, some sing, cry, chant, or laugh. Some sleep or sit in ditches, eating filth. Some expose their bodies. Some wander day and night. Some curse endlessly. Some are guided by demons, with chaotic hands and urgent eyes. Such types of mad people are now treated with acupuncture and herbal medicine. Diviners also attribute wind to ghosts. (Qianjin Yilu lacks the last ten characters.)
Bian Que said: For diseases caused by hundred evils, there are thirteen needle acupoints. The order of needling starts from Guigong, then Guixin, then Guilei, then Guixin. It is not necessary to needle all; stopping at five or six acupoints is sufficient. If it is the spirit of evil poison, it will speak about its origin. Past verification shows reality, obtaining spirits immediately. It is not necessary to kill them; seek to remove them. For men, start needling from the left; for women, from the right. If several places do not speak, needle all acupoints. (Qianjin Yilu reads "needle all without acupoint character.") Follow the mantra for acupuncture and other treatments, and prepare to master them. (Qianjin Yilu lacks the following fifty characters.) Still need to follow the palm mantra to treat. Ten thousand times, not one mistake. Huangdi Palm Mantra is a secret art of practitioners, binding ghosts, prohibiting robbery of Five Mountains and Four Rivers, mountain spirits, and ghosts, completely prohibiting them. There is a pattern in the joints of the ten fingers of both hands. First, needle Renzhong, named Guigong. Insert from left, exit right. Second, needle the nail of the hand big toe [character missing] (i.e., Yinbai). Insert 2 fen into flesh. Fourth, needle the transverse crease of the palm, named Guixin. Insert half cun. (Note: i.e., Taiyuan. Qianjin Yilu reads "jie" instead of "cun".) Fifth, needle the junction of white and red flesh below the lateral malleolus, Foot Taiyang, named Guilu. Fire needle seven times, three drops. (Note: i.e., Shenmai.) Sixth, needle 1 cun into the hairline above Dazhui, named Guizhen (i.e., Fengfu). Fire needle seven times, three drops. Seventh, needle the depression in the hairline in front of the ear. (Qianjin Yilu lacks "upper seven characters"). 5 fen below the earlobe, named Guichuang (i.e., Jiache). Fire needle seven times, three drops. Eighth, needle Chengjiang, named Guishi. Exit from left to right. Ninth, needle 3 cun above the transverse crease of the hand, between the two tendons, named Guilu. (Note: i.e., Laogong. Qianjin Yilu adds "Jianshi" four characters.) Tenth, needle straight above the nose, 1 cun into the hairline, named Guitang. Fire needle seven times, three drops. (Note: i.e., Shangxing.) Eleventh, needle the seam below the genitals, apply 3 cones. For women, it is the clitoris, named Guicang. Twelfth, needle Chi Ze, at the outer end of the transverse crease. (Qianjin Yilu reads "middle of transverse crease, inner and outer crease ends.") Connect to the junction of white and red flesh, named Guichen. Fire needle seven times, three drops. (Note: This is Quchi.) Thirteenth, needle 1 cun into the tongue, at the lower seam of the middle of the tongue, pierce through to the top of the tongue, named Guifeng. Place a board horizontally across the mouth to fix the needle head, preventing tongue movement. Previously, if hands and feet are opposite, needle two acupoints. If isolated acupoints, needle singly. According to Qianjin Yilu, the text is largely the same with minor differences. Sentences above and below with the same meaning are not noted.
Eight Moxibustion Acupoints for Hong Kong Jiao
Qianjin says: Whenever Hong Kong Jiao initially presents with foot weakness, apply moxibustion quickly. Also take Zhuli Tang. After moxibustion, take Bafeng San; there is no case that does not recover. Treat urgently. If one only applies moxibustion but does not take the powder, or takes the powder but does not apply moxibustion, such cases are half recovered, half dead. Even if recovered, it may recur in one or two years. Upon feeling it, quickly apply moxibustion according to this method and take the powder. Ten out of ten cases are cured. This disease, even if mild and not immediately dangerous, if treated improperly and the root is not removed, will eventually lead to death. One must pay careful attention.
First, moxibustion on Fengshi. Next, moxibustion on Futu. (Qianjin Yilu lacks "moxibustion" character, same below.) Next, moxibustion on Dubi. Next, moxibustion on Xiyan (Qianjin Yilu reads Ximu.) Next, moxibustion on Zusanli. Next, moxibustion on Shanglian. Next, moxibustion on Xialian. Next, moxibustion on Jiegu.
For the eight sites: First, Fengshi acupoint. Let the patient stand upright with arms hanging down. (Qianjin Yilu reads "hands.") Extend ten fingers straight down, covering the thighs. Mark where the central finger touches (Qianjin Yilu lacks "when" and "central" characters) on the large tendon of the thigh. (Qianjin Yilu lacks "is" character.) Apply 100 cones; more is permissible. (Four characters in Qianjin Yilu read "apply moxibustion according to severity.") For mild cases, do not reduce below 100 cones; for severe cases, up to 500-600 cones at one site. Do not apply all at once; divide into three sessions. Good. Second (Qianjin Yilu lacks the following ten characters from "do not"): Futu acupoint. Let the patient sit upright on a stool. Use the patient's hand to cover horizontally (Qianjin Yilu reads "cover horizontally") the upper and lower sides of the knee, aligning with the bent knee head. On the upper side, at the side edge, in the center, is the spot. Apply 100 cones. Can also be 50 cones. Third, Dubi acupoint. On the upper edge of the patella, at the outer bone edge (bone edge in Qianjin Yilu reads "angle"), level place. Press with hand to feel the joint separation, then it is correct. One (Qianjin Yilu has "method" character) says: Below the knee head, near the outside, among the three bones' basket heel. Move the foot, press with hand, feel the hole separation, then it is correct. Apply 50 cones. Can reach 100 cones. Fourth, Xiyan (Qianjin Yilu reads Mu.) acupoint. On both sides below the knee head bone, in the depression. (Qianjin Yilu has "apply 100 cones" three characters.) Fifth, Zusanli acupoint. One fu below the knee head bone joint, attached to the outside of the tibia. One (Qianjin Yilu has "method" character) says: At the knee head
