According to the *Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold), the point is named "Chong" (Rush/Thoroughfare), which means "Qu" (Road/Path); this is an error. The *Qianjin Fang*, *Qianjin Yifang* (Supplement to Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold), *Waitai Miyao* (Essential Prescriptions from the Imperial Library), and *Zisheng Jing* (Classic of Nourishing Life) all record it as "three cun"; this is also an error. The *Fahui* (Elucidation), *Leijing* (Classified Classic), *Zhenjiu Juying* (Gathering of Acupuncture and Moxibustion Brilliance), and *Zhenjiu Dacheng* (Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion) record it as "two cun behind the hairline at the back of the ear." However, in the side-view Mingtang diagram of the *Qianjin Fang*, Tianchong (Heavenly Rush, GB 16) is clearly located posterior to Xuanlu (Suspended Skull, GB 17) and Xuanli (Suspended Hairline, GB 18), on the upper ear. There are six other points behind the ear when lying prone; this point is not among them. The *Suwen* (Basic Questions) commentary states: "Two on each upper corner," referring to Tianchong (GB 16) and Qubin (GB 7). The *Jiayi Jing* (Systematic Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion) records that starting from the edge of the head along the ear upwards towards Wanggu (Complete Bone, GB 12), it begins with Tianchong (GB 16). Therefore, currently, this point is taken as two cun above the ear, as described previously at the three-fen mark. The *Rumen* (Introduction) records it as one-and-a-half cun posterior to Chengling (Spiritual Support, GV 19); that is Naokong (Brain Hollow, GB 13). The *Yitong* (Medical Orthodoxy) records it as two cun behind the hairline at the back of the ear, similar to the previous three cun. The *Jinjian* (Golden Mirror) records it as moving three fen posterior from Shuaigu (Rate Valley, GB 8) behind the ear, entering the hairline two cun; this is incorrect. Those texts mentioning "behind the ear" are likely errors for "above the ear." Only the *Shengji Zonglu* (General Records of Holy Relief) agrees with the *Jiayi Jing*.
Shuaigu (GB 8) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: One-and-a-half cun above the ear, entering the hairline. Take the point while chewing. [from *Jiayi Jing*] In the depression, where it is hollow. [from *Mingtang*]
Note: *Waitai Miyao* and *Mingtang* record it as "Shuai Gu." *Daqan* or records it as "Shuai Gu." *Fahui* has the phrase "like the previous three fen," but the basis is unknown.
Jiaosun (SJ 20) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: In the middle of the auricle (pinna). Open the mouth to find the hole. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Below the hairline. [Secondary Commentary] Forbidden for needling. [from *Rumen*]
Note: *Qianjin Fang*, *Qianjin Yifang*, *Waitai Miyao*, *Zisheng Jing*, *Shengji Zonglu*, and *Shenyingshengjing* (Miraculous Response Classic) record it as the upper middle part of the auricle. Secondary Commentary records it as the upper middle part of the outer rim of the ear, below the hairline. *Rumen* and Wu Wenbing record it as the upper middle part of the auricle, below the hairline; this is correct. The *Qifu Lun* (Treatise on Qi Passages) states: "One on each upper auricle." Secondary Commentary explains: "Refers to Jiaosun (SJ 20)." In the *Jiayi Jing*, the character "Shang" (Upper) is likely omitted after "Kuo" (Auricle); it is now supplemented.
Qubin (GB 7) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: In the curved corner where the ear enters the hairline. In the center of the depression. When鼓颔 (moving the jaw), there is a gap. [from *Jiayi Jing*]
Note: *Mingtang* and *Daqan* record it as "Qu Fa." Wang Zhizhong said: "Qu Fa" is suspected to be a typo for "Fa Bin" (Hair Temple); "Fa" should be "Bin," and the character is erroneous. *Zhenjiu Juying* records it as "Qu." *Qianjin Fang* and *Qianjin Yifang* lack the character "Ru" (Enter); it should be deleted. Common people take the small curved hairline below the curved circumference anterior to the ear as Qubin (GB 7). The *Jiayi Jing* belongs to the upper ear region. *Qianjin Fang* and *Qianjin Yifang* jointly state it does not belong to the anterior ear. *Rumen* says: cover the front tip with the ear to locate the point; however, this may vary due to ear size.
There are twelve points behind the ear.
[Image: Diagram of Points Behind the Ear]
Luxi (SJ 3) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: Also known as Luxin. [from *Daqan*] In the blue collateral vessels between the ear and the skull. [from *Jiayi Jing*] In the blue vein. [from *Shengji Zonglu*]
Insert needle one fen; excessive bleeding can be fatal. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Forbidden for needling. [from *Zisheng Jing*, *Shengji Zonglu*, *Rumen*]
Note: *Rumen* and *Zhenjiu Juying* write "Xi" as "Xin." *Daqan* and *Baojian* consider it an alias. The character "Jian" (Between) was likely misplaced before "Qing" (Blue/Green) during transcription. *Qianjin Fang* and *Qianjin Yifang* record it in the bone depression; this explanation is close to being correct. Locate the point close to the ear. Mai, Yifeng positions are the same.
Mai Point [from *Jiayi Jing*]: Also known as Zi Mai. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Posterior to the root of the ear, in the chicken-foot-shaped blue collateral vessels. Puncture until blood flows like bean curd dregs. [from *Jiayi Jing*] In the blue vein. [from *Shengji Zonglu*] Forbidden for moxibustion. [from *Qianjin Fang*] Forbidden for needling. [from *Rumen*]
Note: *Qianjin Fang* and *Qianjin Yifang* lack the characters "Hou Luo" (Posterior Collateral). *Waitai Miyao* lacks the character "Mai." Okamoto said: In the midline behind the ear, rising bone like a chicken fist; in the depression; this is another theory. *Shengji Zonglu* says: Bleeding should not be excessive, which implies the meaning of flowing like bean curd dregs.
Yifeng (SJ 17) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: In the depression behind the ear. [from *Suwen*] Pressing causes traction/pain in the ear. [from *Jiayi Jing*] First, have the patient bite twenty copper coins, then search for the point within. [from *Zhenjiu Juying*, citing *Zhenjing*]
Note: *Mingtang* says the sharp angle behind the ear is confused with the Mai point. *Yitong*, Wu Wenbing, and *Zhenjiu Dacheng* follow this. *Rumen* records it behind the earlobe.
Fubai (GB 15) [from *Suwen*]: One cun above the ear, entering the hairline. [from *Jiayi Jing*]
Note: *Qianjin Yifang* commentary says: Anterior to Yifeng (SJ 17), posterior to Qiaoyin (GB 11). *Waitai Miyao* says: Posterior to the lower mandible curve; both are incorrect. Based on Wanggu (GB 12) externally, Fubai (GB 15) is determined superiorly, and Wanggu (GB 12) inferiorly; Qiaoyin (GB 11) is taken in the middle.
Qiaoyin (GB 11) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: Also known as Zhenggu. [from *Leijing*] Superior to Wanggu (GB 12), inferior to the occipital bone. It moves and responds to touch. [from *Jiayi Jing*]
Note: *Zisheng Jing* and *Shengji Zonglu* etc. record "moves with a gap," lacking the text "responds to touch," which seems inexplicable. *Rumen* and *Yitong* record "move ear to create a gap." In *Jiayi Jing*, "movement" refers to the arterial pulse, hence "responds to touch." *Jinjian* records it high behind the ear, inferior to the occipital bone; this is incorrect. It shares the name but differs in location from the Foot-Qiaoyin point. *Shengji Zonglu* calls it Shou-Qiaoyin.
Wanggu (GB 12) [from *Suwen*]: Four fen above the ear, entering the hairline. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Laterally, Wanggu. [Added Note]
Five points descend vertically down the midline of the face from Shenting (GV 24).
Suliao (GV 27) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: Also known as Mianwang. [from *Jiayi Jing*] At the upper end of the nasal column. [from *Jiayi Jing*] In the depression. [from *Rumen*] Zhuntou. [from *Leijing*] Forbidden for moxibustion. [from *Jiayi Jing*]
Note: Various texts use either "Su" or "Suo." *Waitai Miyao* uses "Su." They are interchangeable due to phonetic similarity. "Suo" is also equivalent to "Su," with no difference in meaning; the following follows this pattern. "Wang" (King): *Waitai Miyao* writes "Yu" (Jade). *Zisheng Jing* writes "Shang" (Upper). *Zhenjiu Juying*, *Yitong*, Wu Wenbing, and *Zhenjiu Dacheng* write "Zheng" (Correct/Center). *Daqan* writes "Tu" (Earth); these are likely copying errors.
Shuigou (GV 26) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: Also known as Birenzhong. [from *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*] Also known as Guigong. Also known as Guiliting. [from *Qianjin Fang*] Also known as Guishi. Also known as Renzhong. [from *Qianjin Yifang*] Below the nasal column, in the Philtrum, take directly under the lip. [from *Jiayi Jing*] In the depression. [from *Leijing*] Below the nasal column, in the center of the groove. [from *Shenyingshengjing*]
Note: *Zhenjiu Juying*, *Yitong*, and *Zhenjiu Dacheng* record it near the nostril; this is incorrect. *Yixue Gangmu* says: At the water protrusion when holding water in the mouth. *Qizhong Leigao* says: Humans reside in the center of Heaven and Earth; Heavenly Qi connects through the nose, Earthly Qi connects through the mouth. Heaven feeds humans with five Qi, received by the nose; Earth feeds humans with five Flavors, received by the mouth. This point is in the center, hence called "Qiao Zhong" (Orifice Center). It is said humans have nine orifices; those above the Renzhong are paired, those below are single; thus it can be named Qiao Zhong. Also, *Laozi Shilue* says: The nose is the Gate of Heaven, the mouth is the Door of Earth, and the Renzhong is between Heaven and Earth.
Duanduan (GV 28) [from *Qianjin Fang*]: At the upper end of the lip. [from *Jiayi Jing*] In the center of the upper lip, at the very tip. [from *Rumen*]
Note: In *Jiayi Jing*, Duanduan is written as Zhuanggu; this is a character error. The table of contents again writes Duigu. *Mingtang* records it below the lower lip of the chin, take with mouth open; that is Chengjiang (CV 24), do not follow. *Daqan* says above the lip tubercle; the character "Zhu" (Tubercle) is meaningless; this is a flaw of forced rhyme composition.
Yinjiao (GV 29) [from *Suwen*]: Inside the lip, above the teeth, in the gum seam. [from *Jiayi Jing*] In the tendon of the gum seam. [from *Zisheng Jing*]
Note: "Above the teeth": *Leijing* writes "Upper Teeth." *Qianjin Fang* and *Waitai Miyao* lack the character "Zhong" (Middle). *Jinjian* and *Zhenjiu Dacheng* write "Yin," meaning is the same. *Neijing Jizhu* says: The Yinjiao point is in the gum seam below the teeth inside the lip. Perhaps in ancient times there were two Yinjiao points: the Governing Vessel's Yinjiao enters the upper teeth, and the Conception Vessel's Yinjiao enters the lower teeth. Because the upper and lower gums and teeth intersect, it is named Yinjiao. It is unknown what book this is based on; it cannot be followed. Lu Fu's *Yizhongzi* says: Monk Huirong of Shu entered Zhe, traveled to Kuaiji, treated a rickets patient by acupuncture, making him lie down, taking the Yinjiao point; the bone joints gradually extended, and he recovered soon. This point is the Well point of the Governing Vessel. The spinal bone joints are governed by the Governing Vessel; once Qi mechanism penetrates, bones naturally extend, resembling the Xuanmen Zhuanheche method, capable of opening gates and intersecting, leading to longevity, let alone extending bone joints. This method is not recorded in books; Huirong realized it in meditation.
Chengjiang (CV 24) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: Also known as Tianchi. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Also known as Guishi. [from *Qianjin Fang*] Also known as Xuanjiang. [from *Zisheng Jing*] Also known as Chujiang. [from *Shengji Zonglu*] Below the chin and lip, take with mouth open. [from *Jiayi Jing*] In the hollow below the lower lip. [from *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*] Below the lower lip. [from *Qianjin Fang*] Below the ridge of the lower lip. [from *Mingtang*] In the depression. [from *Fahui*]
Eight points descend vertically down the second row of the face from Qucha.
Canzhu (BL 2) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: Also known as Yuanzai. Also known as Shiguang. Also known as Yeguang. Also known as Mingguang. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Also known as Yuanzhu. [from *Yitong*] At the eyebrow head, also called Meiben. [from *Suwen*] In the depression. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Forbidden for needling and moxibustion. [from *Rumen*]
Note: "Yuanzai": *Zisheng Jing* writes "Yuanzhu." *Baojian* and *Zhenjiu Dacheng* write "Yuanzhu"; "Zai" is likely a writing error. "Mingguang": *Zisheng Jing* and *Zhenjiu Dacheng* write "Guangming." "Shiguang": *Zhenjiu Juying*, *Yitong*, and Wu Wenbing write "Shiyuan."
Jingming (BL 1) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: Also known as Lekong. [from *Jiayi Jing*] (*Waitai Miyao* writes Lekong; Lei and Kong are the same character) Also known as Lekong. [from *Zhenjiu Juying*] Inner canthus of the eye. [from *Suwen*] Inner and outer canthi. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Forbidden for moxibustion. [from *Zisheng Jing*] Forbidden for needling. [from *Rumen*]
Note: *Qianjin Fang* writes "Jingming"; "Jing" and "Jing" are phonetically interchangeable. *Leijing* says: One fen between the inner and outer canthi, in the hollow. *Rumen* says: In the red flesh depression; this is incorrect.
*Jiayi Jing* and Secondary Commentary both say: Moxa three zhuang. *Yitong* says: Someone asks why Jingming, Yingxiang, Chengqi, and Sizhukong are all forbidden for moxibustion? Answer: These four points are near the eye; the eye fears fire, hence forbidden for moxibustion. By inference, Jingming can be moxaed; Wang Bing's commentary is wrong. Yet, under the Jingming point, *Yitong* notes "Moxa three zhuang," which is contradictory.
Yingxiang (LI 20) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: Also known as Chongyang. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Lateral margin of the nasal cavity. [from *Suwen*] Superior to Heliao, below the nose, beside the nostril. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Not suitable for moxibustion. [from *Waitai Miyao*]
Note: "Kong" (Nostril): *Waitai Miyao* erroneously writes "Ru" (Breast/Nipple). *Qianjin Fang* writes "One cun above He Liao, beside the nostril"; this is incorrect. *Rumen*, Wu Wenbing, and *Zhenjiu Dacheng* write "One cun above Heliao." *Shenyingshengjing* writes "Five fen beside the nostril"; all are incorrect. See discussion below.
Heliao (LI 19) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: Also known as . [from *Waitai Miyao*] Also known as Changpin. [from *Zisheng Jing*] Directly below the nostril, flanking Shuigou, five fen lateral. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Forbidden for moxibustion. [from *Rumen*]
Note: " ": *Mingtang* writes "Liao," likely due to phonetic similarity. *Zhenjiu Dacheng* writes " ". "Changpin": *Daqan* writes "Chang ". *Zhenjiu Juying* writes "Chang Jia." Also, *Daqan* says: Heliao is also known as He ; the character is the same, so it is not taken. The character "Xi" under "Xia" is redundant. *Qianjin Fang* etc. do not have it, which is correct; it should be deleted. Heliao is five fen lateral to Shuigou. Yingxiang is above Heliao, below the nose, beside the nostril; thus Yingxiang is taken close to the nostril. *Qifu Lun* says: Lateral margin of the nostril, this is what is meant. *Qianjin Fang* says: Yingxiang is one cun above Heliao (He was originally a typo for He); this enters the nostril. *Shenyingshengjing*, *Zisheng Jing*, *Fahui* etc. note that Yingxiang five fen beside the nostril is incorrect. Meridian flow circulates right-left, left-right, passing through Shuigou, over the lateral margin of the nostril upwards; this can prove it. *Zisheng Jing* says: *Tongren Jing* has two Heliao points, five fen lateral to Shuigou below the nostrils. *Mingtang Xiajing* writes "He," which is " "; *Shangjing* writes "He Liao," all stating five fen lateral to Shuigou below the nostrils; thus it is one point. However, *Tongren* has two Heliao points in the Hand-Shaoyang meridian, in the depression of the hairline anterior to the ear; these points are far apart. It is feared that *Mingtang Shangjing* mistakenly wrote "He" instead of "He."
Twelve points descend vertically down the third row of the face from Linqi above the eye.
Yangbai (GB 14) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: One cun above the eyebrow, aligned with the pupil. [from *Jiayi Jing*]
Note: *Rumen* writes "Yang" as "Yang"; this is a character error. *Zisheng Jing* and *Shengji Zonglu* write "Aligned with the pupil."
Chengqi (ST 1) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: Also known as Xi Xue. Also known as Mian . [from *Jiayi Jing*] Seven fen below the eye, aligned with the pupil. [from *Jiayi Jing*] In the depression. [from *Zisheng Jing*] Take with eyes looking straight ahead. [from *Jinjian*] Forbidden for moxibustion. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Moxa three zhuang. [from *Zisheng Jing*] Forbidden for needling. [from *Zisheng Jing*]
Note: "Xi": *Waitai Miyao* writes "Xi." *Qianjin Yifang* says: Seven fen below the eye, under the orbital bone. *Waitai Miyao* Zhen Quan says: Eight fen below the eye; both are incorrect. *Jinjian* says: Below the eye eyelid.
Sibai (ST 2) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: One cun below the eye, facial bone, cheekbone hollow. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Aligned with the pupil. [from *Fahui*] Take with eyes looking straight ahead. [from *Leijing*] Forbidden for moxibustion. [from *Leijing*, *Rumen*]
Note: " ", "Quan", " ", " ": Meaning unclear. " " sounds like Kui. *Yupian*: Facial cheekbone. *Guangyun*: Bone between cheeks. *Jiyun*: Same as " ". HT " " sounds like Kui. *Jiyun*: Says facial " ". *Shuowen*: Quan. *Jiyun*: Cheekbone. Also means thick. Or written as " " sounds like Zhuo, facial prominent bone. *Boya*: Quan, " ". All mixed as synonymous. However, one bone with multiple names is suspicious. Upon investigation, " " is the general name for the bone between the cheeks; the other characters are names within the " " bone. Why? " " refers to Emperor Gaozu of Han, whose "Long Yan" (Dragon Face) is recorded in *Shiji* as "Long Zhun." "Zhun" sounds like Zhuo. *Jiyun*: Facial cheekbone. *Zhuangzi* "Sang Ran," commentary: Appearance of high forehead and beautiful hair. *Erya* "Bo Er ," commentary: Wide in the center, sharp at both ends; this is the prominent, sharp, high appearance of the " " bone. Gaozu's " " bone is high and prominent next to the nose, connecting to the cheekbone, hence called Dragon Face. "Cong Chu," means protruding/high. From this perspective, in the hollow below the eye, only one finger fits, which is one cun. Among them, seven fen takes Chengqi, the remaining three fen reaches the high point of the " " bone, which is the Quan (cheekbone). Under the note for Quan , Ji said Dui Gu, which can be seen. "Mian" was formerly written as "Xiang." *Qifu Lun* says: Facial Qiu bone hollow, one each. Wang Bing said: Refers to Sibai point. Also, the note for Quan below has the character "Mian " bone. *Neijing* originally did not divide sections, hence said "Mian." *Jiayi Jing* based on *Neijing*, thus used "Mian" character; transcription error made it "Xiang," hence now corrected. *Qianjin*, *Waitai* etc. lack the five characters below "Mian." "Qiu" is not recorded in dictionaries, likely an ancient character for " ". *Jingmai Pian* says: Yellow eyes, dry mouth, Qiu Nosebleed. Also says: Tearing, Qiu Nosebleed. Radical Nine sounds like Qiu. *Shuowen*: Nasal obstruction due to cold. Qiu. Qiu easily confused, hence recorded.
Juliao (ST 3) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: Eight fen lateral to the nostrils, aligned with the pupil. [from *Jiayi Jing*]
Note: "Ju": *Qianjin Yifang* and *Zisheng Jing* erroneously write "Chen." *Zhenjiu Juying*, Wu Wenbing, *Yitong*, and *Zhenjiu Dacheng* all say level with Shuigou; this is incorrect. *Zhenjiu Dacheng* cites *Zhenjiu Juying* saying: Juliao is also known as Ju . Now this is not seen in current texts. *Daqan* also considers it an alias " ", meaning is the same; now not taken.
Dicang (ST 4) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: Also known as Huiwei. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Four fen lateral to the mouth, as if near the lower aspect. [from *Jiayi Jing*] There is a slight pulse movement; if suffering from wind disease for a long time, the pulse may also be immobile. [from *Benshi Fang*]
Note: "Hui": *Waitai Miyao* and *Baojian* write "Wei." *Qianjin Yifang* says: One leek-leaf width at the corner of the mouth, near the lower arterial movement. *Zisheng Jing* and *Benshi Fang* have the character "Wen" (Corner) after "Kou" (Mouth). Have the character "Wai" (Outside) after "Fen" (Fen). *Fahui* lacks the three characters "Ru Jin Xia" (Like Near Lower).
Daying (ST 5) [from *Suwen*]: Also known as Suikong. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Below the mouth, corresponding to the shoulders. [from *Suwen*] One cun and three fen anterior to the curved mandible, in the bone depression, arterial pulse. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Diagonally backward from Dicang to the upper mandible bone. [Added Note] Note: "Three fen": *Qianjin Fang*, *Qianjin Yifang*, *Waitai Miyao*, *Zisheng Jing*, *Shengji Zonglu*, and *Zhenjiu Dacheng* write "Two fen." All subsequent texts agree with *Jiayi Jing*.
Six points descend vertically down the fourth row of the face from Benshen.
Sizhukong (TE 23) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: Also known as Ju . [from *Jiayi Jing*] Also known as Mu . [from *Waitai Miyao*] Posterior to the eyebrow. [from *Suwen*] In the depression. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Posterior to the tail of the eyebrow bone. [from *Rumen*] Arterial pulse. [Added Note] Forbidden for moxibustion. [from *Jiayi Jing*]
Note: "Mu ": *Daqan* writes "Yue ". "Ju ", likely a character error. *Rumen* omits the character "Kong."
Tongziliao (TE 23 / GB 1) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: Also known as Taiyang. Also known as Qianguan. [Commentary in *Qianjin Fang*] Also known as Houqu. [from *Waitai Miyao*] Five fen lateral to the outer canthus of the eye. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Arterial pulse. [Added Note] Forbidden for needling and moxibustion. [from *Rumen*]
Note: *Zisheng Jing* says: Qianguan is half a cun posterior to the eye, also named Taiyang point. Also says: *Tongren* has Shangguan and Xiaguan, two points each. *Suwen* is the same. *Mingtang* Upper and Lower Classics have Shangguan but no Xiaguan. Only the Upper Classic has Qianguan point, which is not the same as Xiaguan; it is below Shangguan, likely different. It is itself the Qianguan point, also named Taiyang point, indispensable for treating wind-red eyes, headache, dizziness, dry eyes, etc., so it is appended after Xiaguan. Now, according to *Qianjin Fang*, Qianguan and Taiyang are aliases for Tongziliao. *Zisheng Jing* considering them separate points is incorrect.
Quanliao (SI 18) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: Also known as Dui Gu. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Inferior to the Qiu bone. [from *Suwen*] In the depression at the lower margin of the facial " " bone. [from *Jiayi Jing*] End of Dui Gu. [from *Waitai Miyao*] Forbidden for needling and moxibustion. [from *Rumen*]
Twelve points descend vertically down the fifth row of the face from Touwei.
Hanyan (GB 7) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: Above the anterior angle of the ear. [from *Suwen*] Upper margin of the temporal region in the curved circumference. [from *Jiayi Jing*] Directly below Touwei, entering the hairline. [Added Note] Forbidden for deep needling. [Secondary Commentary]
Note: *Yixue Gangmu* says: "Zhou" should be "Jiao" (Angle); this is incorrect. "Qu Zhou" (Curved Circumference) refers to the area from the frontal angle down to the hairline anterior to the ear, shaped curved; the upper margin of the temporal region. *Zisheng Jing* and *Daqan* both say the upper margin of Naokong; this is incorrect. Commentators often mistake "Ni" for Naokong; perhaps because Naokong is also named "Ni," they became confused. Since there is language like "upper margin," it is not a point name, which is evident. It is commonly known as "Mi Jiao" (Rice Chewing). Emerging from the hair onto the face, the upper margin of the temporal region is Hanyan; the center is Xuanlu; the lower margin is Xuanli; all are taken from the hairline, hence called "Qu Zhou." *Qianjin Shanghan Pian* says: The "Ni" point is in the tail of the eyebrows and eyes; there are ascending and descending collateral vessels above and below in the middle; this shows it is not Naokong. *Waitai Miyao* writes "Qu Jiao." Secondary Commentary, *Yitong* write "Below Qu Jiao." *Zisheng Jing*, *Shengji Zonglu*, *Fahui*, *Zhenjiu Juying*, Wu Wenbing, *Baojian* write "Below Qu Zhou." *Leijing* writes "Anterior angle of the ear." *Rumen* writes "Opposite the external frontal angle of the ear." *Jinjian* writes "Upper margin of the curved angle of the two Taiyang points." *Zhenjiu Dacheng* writes "Above Qu Zhou"; the more precise, the more doubtful. There are two "Jiao" (Angles): one formed by the frontal hairline, one formed by the hairline anterior to the ear. Thus, *Neijing* refers to Touwei as the frontal angle, and Hanyan, Xuanli as the anterior ear angle. It also mentions "Qu Zhou," which is the curved hairline below the frontal angle. It mentions the anterior ear angle, which is the hairline curved circumference further out forming another angle. Thus, *Neijing* has language of "angle upper" and "angle lower." Naokong point is in the hollow of the brain bone, hence called Naokong, also named "Ni," not the same as this "Ni." Therefore, readers of classical texts must know this. Various families do not understand the meaning of "Jiao" and "Naokong," and arbitrarily change them; how can one not be cautious? Those texts saying "below Qu Zhou" refer to speaking downwards from the hairline above the eyebrows. Xuanlu and Xuanli, saying "above Qu Zhou," refer to speaking upwards from the hairline anterior to the ear diagonally towards the outer canthus. The characters "Upper" and "Lower" are hard to explain, causing much doubt among common people; thus, we follow *Jiayi Jing* and *Qianjin* together. "Qu Jiao" and "Qu Zhou" refer to the so-called small frontal angle.
Xuanlu (GB 8) [from *Jiayi Jing*]: Also known as Suikong. [Commentary in *Suwen Zhijie*] Below the anterior angle of the ear. [from *Suwen*] Middle of the temporal region in the curved circumference. [from *Jiayi Jing*]
Note: *Gukong Lun* says: Suikong
