(Ye, the pharynx, is the passage for swallowing food and drink, located posterior to the larynx. The old annotation stating it is anterior to the larynx is incorrect.) It belongs to the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Channel (Zu Taiyin Pi Jing) and the Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel (Zu Yangming Wei Jing) (*Ling Shu* states: The regular branch of the Foot-Taiyin ascends and knots at the pharynx. *Su Wen* states: The pharynx governs Earth Qi; Earth Qi connects with Ye. The Foot-Taiyin channel spreads in the stomach and links with the pharynx, hence abdominal fullness and dry throat occur. It also states: The Foot-Yangming channel connects with the Heart, follows the pharynx, and ascends to the mouth.) It also belongs to the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Channel (Shou Taiyang Xiaochang Jing) and the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Channel (Shou Shaoyin Xin Jing) (*Ling Shu* states: The Hand-Taiyang channel links with the Heart, follows the pharynx, and descends through the diaphragm. When this channel is disturbed, it causes pain in the pharynx and swelling of the chin, making it difficult to turn the head. It also states: The branch of the Hand-Shaoyin channel arises from the Heart system, ascends, and flanks the pharynx. When this channel is disturbed, it causes dry throat, heart pain, thirst, and desire to drink. Shen Chengzhi says: The area flanking the pharynx is the intersection of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Channel and the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Channel.) It also belongs to the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Channel (Zu Shaoyin Shen Jing) (*Ling Shu* states: Diseases generated by the Foot-Shaoyin include heat in the mouth, dry tongue, swollen pharynx, ascending Qi, dry and painful Ye. *Su Wen* states: When pathogenic factors invade the collateral of the Foot-Shaoyin, it causes pain in the pharynx, inability to ingest food, unprovoked irritability, and Qi rushing upward to Benmen. Note: Ben refers to the diaphragm. Ben-shang refers to the cardiac orifice (Benmen). *Nan Jing* states: The Stomach has the Benmen. It also states: If there is swelling in the pharynx, inability to swallow saliva, and inability to expectorate saliva at times, needle the anterior aspect of Ran Gu, which is the site of the collateral of the Foot-Shaoyin.) It also involves the Foot-Jueyin Liver Channel (Zu Jueyin Gan Jing) and the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Channel (Zu Shaoyang Dan Jing) (*Ling Shu* states: The regular branch of the Foot-Shaoyang, diverging, ascends to flank the pharynx and emerges in the center of the jaw and chin. *Su Wen* states: The Liver is the general; decisions are made by the Gallbladder, and the pharynx serves as its envoy. It also states: When the Yin-Yin and Yang-Yang channels alternate and cease, this indicates Yin Qi reaching the Heart, moving up and down without constancy, entering and exiting without awareness, leading to dry throat and pharynx. The disease is in Spleen-Earth. Note: Yin-Yin refers to the Jueyin channel; Yang-Yang refers to the Shaoyang channel, both associated with Wood Qi. Wood overacts on Earth; therefore, although throat diseases manifest in Spleen-Earth, they are actually caused by the Liver and Gallbladder. Zhu Danxi says: Manifestations arising from the combination of Hand and Foot Yin and Yang channels are called swollen pharynx, involving the Foot-Shaoyin and Jueyin channels.)
