Hundred diseases often involve phlegm; therefore, treating disease should prioritize resolving phlegm. Those skilled in treating phlegm simultaneously regulate Qi (vital energy); when Qi flows smoothly, phlegm is easily discharged. For phlegm with a floating and slippery pulse (Fuping Huamai), descending methods are suitable; for a floating and excess pulse (Fushi Mai), emetic methods are suitable; for a deep and small pulse (Chenxiao Mai), emetic methods are not suitable due to the fear of damaging healthy Qi (Zhengqi). In general, treating phlegm disorders should not rely entirely on diuretic/damp-draining herbs, as excessive use weakens Spleen Qi (Pipi), which may cause phlegm to be generated more easily and abundantly. If phlegm is generated due to Spleen deficiency, one should employ methods to strengthen the Spleen and dry dampness (Jianpi Zaoshi), combining tonification with draining. Chenpi (Tangerine Peel) and Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) serve as adjuncts. Phlegm is a turbid substance; it is suitable to use Zhuli Datan Wan (Bamboo Juice Pill for Expelling Phlegm, capable of guiding phlegm out through the Large Intestine without damaging Yuan Qi [Original Qi], with miraculous effects).
Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) 2 liang (processed seven times, soaked thoroughly in Shengjiang juice [Fresh Ginger Juice], dried, sliced, and roasted on tiles); Baifuling (Poria) 2 liang; Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, white pith removed, cleaned) 2 liang; Zhigancao (Prepared Licorice Root) 1 liang; Renshen (Ginseng Root) 1 liang; Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome, soaked in wine until penetrated, then dried) 3 liang; Jiu Huangqin (Scutellaria Root processed with wine) 3 liang; Chenxiang (Aquilaria Wood) 5 qian; Mengshi (Calamine) 1 liang (mixed evenly with 1 liang of Yanxiao [Saltpeter], placed in a silver jar, covered with a tile, sealed with salt mud, dried, and calcined in charcoal fire until golden yellow).
The above ingredients are ground into fine powder. Add half a bowl of Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) and two zhong of Shengjiang juice (Fresh Ginger Juice), boil in a pot for one ke (approx. 15 minutes), then mix the powder with the liquid and pound thoroughly. Store in a porcelain jar and dry. Repeat the pounding and drying process seven times using Zhuli and Shengjiang juice as before. Finally, mix with Zhuli to form pills the size of small beans. Take 100 pills per dose, washed down with rice water after meals. (From *Wanbing Huichun*)
Wind-phlegm causing dizziness (accompanied by vomiting/nausea, vertigo, greenish-yellow complexion, and wiry pulse [Xianmai]):
Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) 1 liang; Sheng Nanting (Raw Arisaema Rhizome) 1 liang; Hanshuishi (Calcitum) 1 liang; Tianma (Gastrodia Rhizome) 5 qian; Xionghuang (Realgar) 3 qian; Xiaomai mian (Wheat flour) 3 liang.
Grind into powder, mix with water to form cakes, boil in water until they float, remove, pound into pills. Take 50 pills per dose, washed down with ginger soup. Extremely effective. (From *Gufa Jiyao*)
Cold-phlegm causing asthma/wheezing:
Take one piece of Qingjupi (Green Tangerine Peel), unfold it, insert one Badou (Croton Seed), tie tightly with hemp thread, roast over fire until "preserving nature" (charred but retaining efficacy), grind into powder. Mix with Shengjiang juice (Fresh Ginger Juice) and wine to take. Li Han from Tiantai recorded that this cured Scholar Mo's immediate-onset asthma. (From *Zhangguo Yishuo*)
Phlegm-fire disorder:
Huafen (Trichosanthes Root) 1 jin, sliced. First, mix with one zhong of Lizi (Veratrum Juice) and dry in the sun; second, mix with one zhong of Luobozhi (Radish Juice) and dry in the sun; third, mix with one zhong of Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) and dry in the sun. Grind into powder. Take 1 qian per dose, washed down with good tea. (From *Huaide Tanglu*)
Another prescription: Sangbaipi (Mulberry Root Bark) 4 liang; Kuandonghua (Farfara Flower) 2 liang; Bohe (Mint Herb) 4 liang; Gancao (Licorice Root) 2 liang; Yacha (Sprouted Tea Leaves) 4 liang; Chen Xiangyuan (Dried Citron Fruit) 4 liang; Bobzi (Radish Seed) 5 qian; Xingren (Apricot Seed) 5 qian; Eguan Shi (Avicenniae Fructus or similar mineral) 5 qian. Form pills with water and white sugar. (From *Weisheng Beiyao*)
