The color of Earth is yellow, corresponding to the Spleen and Stomach. Instead of directly tonifying Earth, this formula clears fire from within the Earth element, purifies Metal (Lung), and controls Wood (Liver) to keep away pathogenic factors, hence named "Yi Huang" (Benefiting Yellow). This refers to Li Dongyuan's statement: "When heat excessively invades internally, use sour substances to astringe." Shao Yao is sour and cold, capable of draining Liver fire and astringing Lung Yin; Huang Lian and Gan Cao enter the Heart meridian to drain Spleen heat. When Metal is prosperous and Fire declines, Liver wind naturally extinguishes, benefiting the Spleen and Stomach. Li Dongyuan used this formula to treat infant slow spleen wind disease, truly a miraculous preparation.
