Peach Kernel (Tao Ren) 3 liang, Cinnamon Heart (Gui Xin) 3 liang, Biota Seed (Bai Zi Ren) 3 liang, Cornus Fruit (Shan Yu Rou) 3 liang, Poria (Fu Ling) 3 liang, Licorice Root (Gan Cao) 1 liang 2 qian, Asarum (Xi Xin) 8 qian.
The above herbs are chopped, boiled in 9 sheng of water until reduced to 5 sheng, the dregs are removed, and the decoction is divided into three doses for administration.
In the *Jutong Lun* chapter of the *Suwen*, there are thirteen types of Jue pain (pain due to rebellious Qi), only two of which are heat patterns, while the rest are cold patterns. Among those pains caused by cold-heat Jue Qi invading the Stomach, the Liver organ is most frequently involved. Since the Liver belongs to Wood and the Stomach to Earth, Wood overacts on Earth; thus, Liver pathogenic factors easily invade the Stomach, and acrid-flavor herbs should be used to guide and disperse them.
Maoshan Atractylodes Rhizome (Cang Zhu) (used raw), Chuan Banxia Phellodendron Bark (Huang Bo) (stir-fried until charred).
The above herbs are ground into powder. Fresh ginger is crushed, and the powder is taken with boiling water. This corresponds to the Er Shen Tang (Two Divine Decoction) from the *Jisheng Fang*, using 5 qian of each herb, decocted in water and taken on an empty stomach.
Er Miao San (Two Marvels Powder) is a small formulation within the category of Ou Fang (even-numbered formulas). Raw Cang Zhu enters the Yangming Meridian and can induce sweating to resolve the pathogens of the Two Yangs; stir-fried Huang Bo enters the Taiyin Meridian and can clear damp-heat from the extreme Yin.
Ginseng Root (Ren Shen) 3 qian, Purple-skin Walnut Meat (Hu Tao Rou) 1 liang (including skin and septum).
The above herbs are ground into powder. Each dose consists of 3 qian, decocted in one zhan of water until reduced to 8 fen, and taken after meals.
*Ri Hua Zi Bencao* states: "If eating sour foods causes tooth discomfort, chewing walnuts thoroughly will relieve it." Some people eat too many plums, causing phlegm-fluids to condense in the diaphragm due to the astringent-cold nature clashing and agitating. The dispersing Qi of walnuts can resolve this stagnation.
Aconite Root (Wu Tou) 3 qian, Prepared Aconite Child Root (Fu Zi) 3 qian, Tiger Palm (Hu Zhang) 3 qian, Costus Root (Mu Xiang) 8 fen.
Add 2 zhong of water, decoct to 1 zhong. It may be taken warm or cold.
"San Sheng" (Three Raw) refers to using three parts from the same source without processing or preparation, hence the name. This is the formula known as San Jian Tang (Three Establishments Decoction) in the *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*. *Da Ming Bencao* states that its power... is forceful, draining... moving straight up and down, acting like a battering ram breaking through gates. It should not be used lightly unless the patient suffers from cold-phlegm and Qi Jue, unconsciousness, and a pattern leaning towards excess. However, later practitioners substituted Arisaema Cum Bile (Nan Xing) for Hu Zhang because Nan Xing is also called Hu Zhang; this is a long-standing error, as they are not the same substance.
Ginseng Root (Ren Shen) 1 liang, Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit (Yi Zhi Ren) 1 liang, Five-flower Dragon Bone (Wu Hua Long Gu) 1 liang, Fuling Spirit (Fu Shen) 5 qian (woody core removed), Poria (Fu Ling) 5 qian, Polygala Root (Yuan Zhi Rou) 5 qian (prepared with Licorice).
The above herbs are ground into powder. Each dose is 2 qian, taken on an empty stomach mixed with warm wine. Decocting in water is also acceptable. The *Liang Fang* adds Costus Root (Mu Xiang) 2.5 qian and Musk (She Xiang) 1 qian.
Miao Xiang San (Wonderful Fragrance Powder) treats nocturnal emission with dreams. The classics state that Jue of the Hand-Shaoyin (Heart) and Foot-Shaoyin (Kidney) meridians causes delirious dreaming. The *Liang Fang* adds Mu Xiang and She Xiang to unblock the Shen (Spirit), preventing dreams of lewdness, thereby avoiding the loss of essence. Its efficacy lies in these two fragrant herbs. Wang Jinggong's formula lacks these two ingredients yet is still named Miao Xiang San; what is the rationale? Or perhaps textual omission occurred during transmission. Essence is stored in the Kidney, controlled by the Spleen, but during the time of discharge, it obeys the Heart. Therefore, Fu Ling and Yuan Zhi are used to unblock the Kidney and drain pathogenic fire; Ren Shen and Yi Zhi Ren are used to secure the Spleen and retain true essence. Fu Shen calms the spirit, Cinnabar (Zhu Sha) stabilizes Qi, and Dragon Bone (Long Gu) secures essence; these three are herbs that calm and anchor the Heart Meridian. Roasted Licorice (Zhi Gan Cao) harmonizes Yin and Yang, so that the Heart has mastery and essence does not fluctuate. The two fragrant herbs can purify dream states...
