Lin Huifu suffered from hematuria (blood in urine). A physician prescribed Bazheng San (Eight-Ingredient Decoction for Rectification) for him to take. After taking the medicine, he found it unbearable; pain in the lower abdomen and anterior genitalia intensified. Another physician advised him to take Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), after which his condition slightly improved. Later, he took Tusizi Shanyao Wan (Dodder Seed and Chinese Yam Pill); as his Qi and Blood gradually became sufficient, the disease finally healed. My fellow townsman, Prefect Zhang Gang, suffered from intestinal toxin bleeding (hematochezia caused by damp-heat toxins in the intestines) for over ten years. Long-term use of cooling agents yielded no effect. However, after taking Xiaotusizi Wan (Small Dodder Seed Pill), the disease was cured upon finishing the medication. This serves as another verification. Therefore, I record the preceding account as evidence.
Yong Hui suffered from hematochezia (blood in stool). He had tried all kinds of medicines; the bleeding would temporarily stop but then recur. The condition persisted for fifteen years without healing. Someone taught him to take Renshen Pingwei San (Ginseng and Stomach-Pacifying Powder), administering one dose daily. After more than a month, his fifteen-year illness was cured. Alas! Seeking widely and visiting extensively is merely a waste of previous efforts; the Way is near, yet one seeks it far away. This is precisely what is meant by this saying (from *Qingbo Zaji*).
Lunhui Jiu (Reincarnation Wine) refers to human urine. Patients with Fire pathologies may drink a cup occasionally and rinse their mouths with wine; long-term use is effective. It is especially suitable for those suffering from chest distension and stuffiness due to falls and bruises. For women postpartum, decocting it with wine immediately after delivery can prevent various postpartum diseases. Zhang Lun, Vice Minister of Personnel Affairs in Nanjing, was imprisoned in the Jinyiwei (Embroidered Uniform Guard) prison for six or seven years. During this time, he did not take any medicine, yet when he experienced chest discomfort, eye pain, headache, and fever, drinking this substance always proved effective. Additionally, Wang Ting, Chief Clerk of the Prince of Shen’s mansion and later Director of Studies at the Imperial Academy, suffered from severe hematochezia that was critical. One day, while in a昏愦 (confused/comatose state), he heard someone say, "Taking medicine is wrong; drinking small water (urine) is good." Trusting this, Wang Ting drank a bowl of urine and instantly revived. Drinking it daily, his condition gradually improved (from *Shuyuan Zaji*).
Li Sili's *Tongju Fang* (Formulas for Carbuncles and Ulcers) records: Zhao Jixiu traveled alone on horseback to assume office as Magistrate of Longquan. At that time, it was midsummer. Soon after, he developed Bi Nu (epistaxis/nosebleed), losing approximately one sheng of blood per day. Li Sili instructed him to take Ou Zhi Dihuang Gao Fang (Lotus Root Juice and Rehmannia Paste Formula). Zhao Yunmou recounted that in previous years, while rushing to the Ministry of Personnel for selection, he walked quickly several times before the provincial offices. His mind was restless, he contracted Heat pathogens, and suddenly developed epistaxis. He consulted a famous physician in Lin'an, took medicine, and recovered. He rewarded the physician with 50,000 coins. Upon parting, the physician repeatedly warned, "Fear that seasonal epidemics will arise later; do not easily trust physicians to prescribe cold-natured herbs like Sheng Dihuang (Raw Rehmannia Root) and Ou Zhi (Lotus Root Juice), as they will damage your Spleen and Stomach, rendering you incurable." Half a month later, he changed doctors, but it was ineffective. Thus, he adopted this formula, concealing the ingredients, and had Zhao Jixiu take it. The illness healed in three days. Zhao asked, "The medicine is so effective; is it not the same as the medicine from the Lin'an physician?" Li smiled and said, "It is exactly the formula mentioned earlier." Zhao sighed, "The former doctor devised a deceitful scheme that nearly cost me my life. Had it not been for your treatment, I would have become a ghost." I believe that ancient sages only sought to benefit others and aid all living beings. Modern physicians, however, often envy the talented and virtuous, frequently using deceitful means to extort heavy bribes, slandering renowned formulas, and corrupting their own moral character. These individuals are great thieves harming sentient beings and sinners against Confucian ethics.
