Huangdi asked Qibo: How should moxibustion be performed for hemiplegia caused by wind-stroke? Qibo replied: Generally, one to two months or three to five months before the onset of wind-stroke, if there is a sudden sensation of soreness, heaviness, numbness, and hypoesthesia in the lower legs and shins during non-seasonal times, this is a precursor sign of wind-stroke. At this time, emergency moxibustion should be applied to four acupoints: Zusanli (ST36) and Juegu (GB39), three moxa cones at each point. Afterwards, wash the affected area with a decoction prepared from mint, scallion, peach leaves, and willow leaves to drive out the pathogenic wind qi through the moxibustion sores. Regarding the moxibustion sores, it is better to perform moxibustion in spring than in autumn; it is advisable to maintain sores on both feet. If people do not believe in this method, have unregulated diet, and indulge excessively in alcohol and sexual activity, they may suddenly suffer from this wind pathogen, resulting in slurred speech and hemiplegia. In such cases, moxibustion should be simultaneously applied to seven acupoints, three cones per point. If the wind pathogen is on the left side, moxa the right side; if on the right, moxa the left. The seven acupoints are: Baihui (GV20), hairline anterior to the ear, Jianjing (GB21), Fengshi (GB31), Zusanli (ST36), Juegu (GB39), and Quchi (LI11). The efficacy is miraculous and cannot be fully recorded; as long as one follows this method, recovery is guaranteed. (From *Yi Shuo Xu Bian*)
Xu Ping suffered from wind-stroke and lost consciousness. The Chief Clerk of Taoyuan performed moxibustion on his umbilicus for one hundred cones (i.e., Shenque CV8; extensive moxibustion is beneficial. Before moxibustion, fill the acupoint with salt.) He eventually regained consciousness. However, several months later, he passed away. Zheng said: A relative of mine suffered from wind-stroke. The physician moxibusted him for five hundred cones, after which he recovered and lived to be over eighty years old. If Xu Ping had undergone three to five hundred cones of moxibustion, who knows if he would not have enjoyed longevity? (Ibid.)
Fan Zimo began suffering from facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eye) in May of the Renwu year. Moxibustion on three acupoints including Tinghui (GB2) corrected the deviation immediately. Numbness and weakness in the right hand and foot were cured by moxibustion on seven acupoints including Baihui (GV20) and the hairline. In August of the following year, he experienced Qi obstruction and phlegm surging, unable to speak. After taking four and a half pills of Jinhu Dan and Nifen (Calomel), his Qi remained obstructed, phlegm did not descend, and the medicine flowed out from his nose. His soul seemed to fly, as if falling into a lake, and he was on the verge of death within moments. Moxibustion on twelve acupoints—Baihui (GV20), Fengchi (GB20), and Jiache (ST6) on both sides—unblocked his Qi. He vomited approximately one bowl of phlegm, followed by more than ten bowel movements. After lying in bed for over half a month, he stabilized. Later, he felt slight abnormalities in his mental state and restlessness in his heart. Immediate moxibustion on Baihui (GV20) and Fengchi (GB20) produced immediate results.
*Ben Shi Fang* states: The so-called twelve acupoints refer to Tinghui (GB2), Jiache (ST6), Dicang (ST4), Baihui (GV20), Jianyu (LI15), Quchi (LI11), Fengshi (GB31), Zusanli (ST36), Juegu (GB39), Faji (hairline), Dazhui (GV14), and Fengchi (GB20). Using these acupoints yields immediate effects. (Ibid.)
A person in my hometown suddenly felt intense heat in his heart and abdomen. He rushed to a pharmacy and described his symptoms. The pharmacist believed this was a precursor to wind-stroke and administered wind-dispelling herbs, but no wind-stroke occurred. I kept this in mind. Upon arriving at Yiling, I met a prefect who suddenly suffered from severe heat in summer. He could not help but sprinkle water on his mat, lie on it, and have someone fan him. The next day, he suddenly suffered wind-stroke and died a few days later. People blamed him for lying on the wet mat and using a fan. Upon reaching Liyang, I saw an elderly woman who also suffered from heat in summer. She slept in the hall at night and suffered wind-stroke the next day. Fortunately, her son had previously prepared Xiaoxuming Tang (Minor Continue Life Decoction) for her, which cured her. Thus, I realized that wind-stroke arises from excessive internal heat in the heart and abdomen, which then triggers the condition. (All above from *Zisheng Jing*)
Zhongcheng Zheng of Yue-E went to Mianyang in recent years. After eating a meal of hot meat daily, he suddenly contracted violent wind pathogen. His nephew Lu, who served as Magistrate of Mianyang, had this prescription. He took it immediately, sweated, and recovered instantly with miraculous effect. The prescription uses tight and fine Arctii Radix (Niubanggen). When harvesting, avoid wind. Scrape off dirt with a bamboo knife or thorn knife, wipe clean with raw cloth, crush, and squeeze out one large sheng of juice. Mix with four he of boiling good honey. Warm and divide into two doses. Take each dose five or six li apart. The first dose induces sweating, and upon sweating, the disease resolves. (From *Bencao Gangmu*, Ibid.)
Tang Run (courtesy name Guan Yun), Vice Prefect of Xinwuyi: Remember, when struck by wind, do not immediately administer wind-dispelling drugs; when struck by Qi stagnation, do not immediately administer Qi-regulating drugs. If one feels these symptoms, urgently take three qian of high-quality musk flesh, grind it to an extremely fine powder in a mortar, mix with sufficient pure sesame oil to make a thin liquid drinkable, and have the patient consume it all at once. Must distinguish that rapeseed oil cannot be used; less medicine leads to slower effect. If the jaw is tightly closed, pry it open and pour it in. Once the patient regains consciousness, then administer Zi Tang. This prescription uses Chuan Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), washed to remove sand and soil, sliced thinly, and decocted in Dou Lin Jiu (Soybean-dripping wine) to make a concentrated juice. Cumulative intake of one or two jin is harmless. Taking these two medicines permanently prevents hemiplegia and slurred speech. Later, if diagnosed as wind-stroke, only take Xiaoxuming Tang (Minor Continue Life Decoction); if diagnosed as Qi strike, only take Yunqi San (Qi-Regulating Powder), and naturally there will be no trouble. He obtained this from Prefect Zhang Shaowei while serving as Instructor in Handong, who claimed it was frequently tested and effective. Jun also treated several people with it, mentioning another prescription of Sesame Oil and Musk frying Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder). (*Shizhai Fang*, Ibid.)
Luo Qianfu said: Li Zhongkuan, Secretary of the Surveillance Commissioner, over fifty years old, suffered from wind syndrome in the spring of Jisi year of Zhiyuan. Symptoms included hemiplegia, limb numbness and paralysis, slurred speech, and mental confusion. A friend prescribed a method: Boil half a jin of Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and three sheng of Hei Dou (Sojae Semen Nigrum) in one dou of water. When beans are cooked, remove Da Huang. Wash Hei Dou thoroughly with fresh water. Take two or three he daily, and wind-heat will naturally dissipate. After taking half, another friend suggested combining Tongsheng San (Unimpeded Salvation Powder), Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), and Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxicity). They claimed combined use would be faster. After taking for over a month, spirit became more exhausted, and aphasia developed, along with cold limbs. I was called to diagnose. Detailed inquiry revealed the history. Pulse was thread-like and minute. I told him: Diseases vary in exterior/interior, deficiency/excess, cold/heat. Medicines have specific formulations of sovereign, minister, assistant, and courier. Your medication lacked basis, hence the worsening condition. Now it is incurable; you brought this upon yourself. Soon after, he died. Cao Tongfu, Assistant Director, had a wife surnamed Xiao, over sixty, poor and alone. In spring, she suddenly suffered wind disease with hemiplegia, slurred speech, mental confusion, and facial paralysis, identical to Li Zhongkuan's symptoms. I punctured the Jing-well points of the twelve meridians to unblock the meridians, and moxibusted Jianjing (GB21) and Quchi (LI11). Considering the date and season, I prescribed medicine. After taking half the course, I said: No need for further medicine; the disease will heal itself. The following spring, I saw her walking normally at the home of Langzhong Zhang Zijing. I sighed: This lady's recovery was due to not taking random medicines. From this, we see Li Zhongkuan's reckless medication led to death; Xiao's poverty and tranquility led to peace. *Neijing* says: Medication without basis becomes a thief of Qi; the Sages warn against this. Yao Xuezai quoted Mr. Xuzi (Lu Zhai): Rich and noble people have two disadvantages compared to the poor and lowly: they cannot correct their faults, and they cannot receive proper medical treatment. Alas! This refers to the Li family.
Chen Ziming treated a woman with wind-stroke, rigid jaw, and overflowing saliva/phlegm. He gave one pill of Shenxian Taiyi Dan (Immortal Supreme One Pill), and she recovered. (Formula seen in Gu Men section.)
During the Song Dynasty, digging for a canal in Tokyo unearthed a stone tablet with Sanskrit seal script, which no one could read at the time. The True Man Lin Lingsu deciphered it character by character. It was a prescription for treating wind-stroke named Qufeng Dan (Wind-Removing Pill). The poem reads: Nature born spiritual grass has no root or trunk, neither in the earth nor on the shore. Initially chasing the east wind like flying catkins, floating stems drift green on the water surface. One divine remedy removes deep ailments, harvest must be in mid-July. Whether severe flaccid paralysis or great wind, even slight wind is insignificant. Dissolve three pills in Soybean-dripping wine, sweat will flow even from an iron pestle head. The method uses purple duckweed (Zi Piao Ling), dried and powdered, mixed with refined honey into pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill per dose, dissolved in Soybean-dripping wine. Treats left/right flaccid paralysis, thirty-six types of wind, lateral/frontal headache, facial paralysis, leprosy/wind sores, all unnamed winds, Hong Kong foot (gout), trauma/fractures, and injured pregnancy. Taking over one hundred pills restores full health. Later generations renamed this formula Ziping Yili Dan (Purple Duckweed Single Pill). (Similar to herbal pills, suitable only for excess syndromes, not for deficiency. *Bencao Gangmu*.)
Xu Shuwéi said: Fan Zimo recorded that during the Chongning era, anyone struck by wind in the rain. Initially facial paralysis, then phlegm tide and obstruction. Moxibusting twelve acupoints on both sides unblocked the Qi. The twelve acupoints are Tinghui (GB2), Jiache (ST6), Dicang (ST4), Baihui (GV20), Jianyu (LI15), Quchi (LI11), Fengshi (GB31), Zusanli (ST36), Juegu (GB39), Faji (hairline), Dazhui (GV14), and Fengchi (GB20). Following this method yields no ineffective cases. (*Yixue Gangmu*)
Pingshi Gao suffered wind-stroke slowly. Zhang Lingyong treated him, who later took Tiedan Wan (Iron Pill), found in the modified formulas of *Puji Fang*. Someone asked Zhang: You often laugh at people taking Tiedan Wan for wind-stroke; why use it now? Zhang said: This is a post-recovery medicine. People today use it when the major pathogen is just arriving, like an ant trying to shake a tree, not understanding the sequence.
The Longshi suffered from facial paralysis. Zhang treated him. For deviated eyes, moxibustion Chengqi (ST1); for deviated mouth, moxibustion Dicang (ST4). Both were effective. If ineffective, moxibust Renying (ST9). Because Qi deficiency allows wind entry causing deviation, unable to exit upwards or drain downwards, true Qi is陷 (sunken) by wind-pathogen. Moxibustion is indicated. *Neijing* says: Sunken conditions require moxibustion. This is exactly what is meant, thus immediate recovery. Another man in Dongqi had the same condition. His bilateral pulses were rapid, string-taut, forceful, and solid. He had strong teeth and abundant Qi, different from the Longshi. Likely wind-fire competing. Prescribed Chengqi Tang (Descending the Yellow Decoction) six liang, decocted in four sheng of water to three sheng, divided into four doses, taken warm. He defecated forty to fifty times, expelling one or two basins of stool. Then used emetics, several doses of detoxification, to ascend/descend Water/Fire. Recovered in ten days.
Wang Keming treated Wang Andao, Prefect of Luzhou, with wind-stroke, locked jaw, and inability to speak. Other physicians looked and left. Wang Keming said: This cannot be reached by decoctions. Heat the ground, sprinkle medicine, and let Andao lie on it. He revived shortly after. (*Jiangxi Tongzhi*)
Li Dongyuan treated Military Supervisor Dong. In cold winter, he suddenly felt wind, then collapsed. Pulses were string-taut and very strong, pressing revealed surging and solid strength. Symptoms: hand spasm, constipation, red hot face. This is initial Wind-Cold attacking the body. Limbs belong to Spleen; Wind-Cold damages them, causing tendon spasm. The patient loved alcohol, had internal excess heat, affecting intestines/stomach, causing constipation and red hot face. Internally, Hand-Foot Yangming meridians were attacked; externally, Foot-Taiyin Spleen meridian was attacked by Wind-Cold.
