Sun Wenyuan treated the wife of a bamboo craftsman who was five months pregnant and suffered from heart pain. Upon investigating the cause, it was found to be due to falling from a building after losing her footing. Sun instructed her to drink one cup of Chinese chive juice, after which the pain ceased. However, after taking two doses of medicine prescribed by another physician, the heart pain recurred, accompanied by vomiting blood filling a basin, a sensation of Qi rushing upward to the throat, unbearable pain, and imminent danger. Upon re-examination, all six pulses were surging and large (Hong Da), with profuse sweating like rain and intermittent panting. Sun urgently ordered that she be moved to a room on the ground floor and administered Yi Yuan San (Five Element Powder) 5 qian, mixed and taken with Perilla decoction. He warned the family: "If she falls asleep tonight, let her wake up naturally; do not disturb her. Once the sweating stops, she will recover." She indeed slept until dawn, the sweating subsided, the chest discomfort disappeared, and the panting stabilized. Subsequently, one dose of Gu Tai Yin (Fetus-Securing Decoction) was given, resulting in complete stability. Initially, a neighboring physician had diagnosed that the pulse for hematemesis should be deep and fine; since it was now surging and large, combined with sweating and continuous panting, he deemed the patient's life in danger that night. Seeing the patient recover, the neighbor asked: "For pregnant women, diaphoresis, purgation, and promoting urination are forbidden, known as the 'Three Prohibitions.' Yesterday's prescription violated all three, yet achieved efficacy. Why?" Sun replied: "Medicine values accurate syndrome differentiation. The woman's sweating was not caused by disease but by residing in a low, small house under the pressure of intense summer heat. The loss of sweat and blood deprived the fetus of nourishment, causing Qi to rush upward and breathing to become intermittent. Moving her downstairs avoided the summer heat; Yi Yuan San is a sacred remedy for resolving summerheat, and Perilla is an excellent herb for calming the fetus. As Qi descends, blood returns to its origin, and the illness resolves. This method originates from Si Xue Yin (Four Blood Decoction) in *Yi Lei Yuan Rong*." The neighbor agreed and withdrew. (Xu Dachun notes: Although Perilla calms the fetus, is it not too dispersing when there is profuse sweating like rain? Please consider this.)
Zhang Zihe treated the wife of Wu Chanxiang, who suffered from asthma near term. He prescribed Liang Ge San (Cooling the Chest Powder) 2 liang, Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) 2 liang, and Mirabilite 1 liang, divided into two doses. After decocting, they were taken cold. After one dose, the illness reduced by more than half; after the second dose, she recovered. Zhang stated: "When pregnant women are ill, Mirabilite is harmless during the tenth or ninth month; it is contraindicated in the eighth month; it is permissible in the seventh month; by the tenth month, the fetus has already formed." (Xu Dachun notes: Mirabilite should ultimately be used with caution.)
Zhou Renzhai treated a pregnant woman with phlegm-induced asthma. He used raw Pinellia Rhizome 1.5 qian, Cinnamon Bark 0.5 qian, Dried Ginger 0.5 qian, Schisandra Berry 0.3 qian, and Ephedra Stem 0.2 fen. These were first decocted in water, then the herbs were added. The mixture should not be too hot; taken warm, the asthma ceased immediately. (Note: Pinellia Rhizome and Cinnamon Bark are both contraindicated for pregnant women; use with discretion. From *Zheng Zhi Da Shu*.)
Xue Lizhai treated the wife of the second son of Wanhu, a student at the local academy in Wujiang, aged over twenty. She had suffered a miscarriage due to an epidemic disease and experienced frequent coughing. After taking herbs for clearing the lungs and releasing the exterior, she developed急促 panting and insomnia. This was because the Spleen Earth was deficient and unable to generate Lung Metal, and the medication further damaged the body, exacerbating the condition. Initially, Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) plus Poria, Pinellia, Schisandra, and Prepared Ginger was prescribed. After four doses, she gradually improved. Upon subsequent visits, Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction) plus Schisandra, followed by Shi Quan Da Bu Tang (Ten Significant Tonifying Decoction), led to her full recovery.
