Wang Xian, courtesy name Shirong, was involved in an incident during the pregnancy of Empress Wenzhao with Emperor Shizong (Xuanwu of Northern Wei). The Empress dreamed that she was chased by the sun and transformed into a dragon circling around her. Upon waking, she felt startled and palpitations, which subsequently developed into Xin Ji (Heart Disease, referring to mental restlessness or cardiac disorders). The Dowager Empress issued an edict summoning Xu Jian and Wang Xian, among others, to diagnose the Empress's pulse. Xu Jian stated that this was caused by mild wind invading the Zang organs, and recommended herbal decoctions combined with acupuncture. Wang Xian diagnosed and said: "Palpating the three positions (Cun, Guan, Chi) reveals no signs of Heart Disease; rather, this is a sign of pregnancy with a male child." The outcome indeed matched his prediction.
Wang Shishan diagnosed a woman who was tall, had a purplish complexion, and was five months pregnant. She requested him to determine the sex of the fetus through pulse diagnosis. Wang said, "The right pulse is larger than the left. The *Mai Jue* (Pulse Classic) states that a large left pulse indicates a boy, and a large right pulse indicates a girl. Since your right pulse is large, it should be a girl." The woman happily replied, "I am carrying a boy! In my previous pregnancy, your father diagnosed me, noting a floating and large right pulse, predicting a girl, but I gave birth to a boy. This time, having the same pulse, I know it is a boy." The outcome was indeed a boy. Wang remarked, "Pulse books only describe the general rules and cannot exhaust all variations. This is why physicians must value the four diagnostic methods: inspection, auscultation/olfaction, inquiry, and palpation."
Zihe Zheng diagnosed a woman in her forties who was pregnant. Believing herself to be old and prone to illness, she thought her condition had relapsed. The physician failed to examine carefully, applying burning needle therapy (Fan Zhen) on both sides of the umbilicus and using toxic drugs to attack the body. This resulted in abdominal pain, reduced appetite, emaciation, and bedridden state. Zihe Zheng palpated her pulse and said, "All six pulses are peaceful, except for the right Chi position, which is flooding, large, and forceful. This is a pregnancy pulse. Coupled with food cravings, it is undoubtedly pregnancy." Those around him laughed. Not long after, she gave birth to a daughter, who had burn marks from the needles under both eyes and nearly lost her sight. When treating women, one must first inquire about pregnancy; rash actions should be avoided.
Wang Huzhi's wife suffered from a mass below the umbilicus, food cravings, sallow complexion, emaciation, and amenorrhea. Some diagnosed it as Gan Xue Qi (Dry Blood Syndrome), but treatment was ineffective. Zihe Zheng observed and said, "It is pregnancy." The patient did not believe him. After repeated requests for treatment, he prescribed mild herbs to appease her intentions (a clever move; otherwise, she might have sought another doctor, leading to errors), refusing to use toxic drugs (all drugs that attack disease are called toxic drugs). Later, menstruation occurred, confirming the pregnancy. Asked how he distinguished it, he answered, "The Chi pulse is flooding." (Note: There are cases where the Chi pulse is weak yet pregnancy exists; see Wang Shishan's case in the Seeking Children section.) This corresponds to the "Yin Bo Yang Bie" pulse described in the *Suwen: Yin Yang Bie Lun*.
A woman in the household of Zhou Jingxing, Magistrate of Kunshan, suffered from abdominal mass pain. A specialist diagnosed it as Qi Accumulation and administered qi-moving and mass-breaking agents. Additionally, someone was ordered to strike her abdomen with a rolling pin, but these were ineffective. Hearing that the Wufeng Temple was efficacious, she prayed there and received an oracle stating, "This is fetal Qi; do not take medicine." Trusting this, she eventually gave birth to a son.
The wife of Han Yuguang, Director at the Ministry of Revenue in Nanjing, suffered from abdominal pain, feeling a mass on either side of the umbilicus upon pressure. A famous physician from Zhejiang happened to be in Beijing. Upon diagnosis, he identified it as Xia (a type of abdominal mass that moves and changes location). After taking herbs containing San Leng and E Zhu for over ten days, the mass seemed to grow larger, so they stopped due to ineffectiveness. Months later, she gave birth to twin boys. These events seem destined; can one not be cautious? (From *Ke Zhong Jian Ji*.)
Cheng Shiguang treated a pregnant woman whose fetus cried in the womb, a condition considered incurable. He poured beans on the ground and instructed the woman to bend down and pick them up, which stopped the fetal crying. (From *Jiangxi Tongzhi*.)
Wan Muzhai stated: Fetal crying in the womb occurs in some women near term. My master's wife, Lady Qian, in the year Jiazi of the Jiajing era, was nine months pregnant when the fetus cried in her womb. Lady Qian was greatly alarmed and instructed her to perform a bowing gesture like a man to stop it. Twenty days later, she gave birth to Senior Brother Bangxiao. (Note: The text following "Master's wife" seems to be written by Wan's disciple; Bangxiao appears to be Wan's son.)
Li Youhuai's maternal relative, Gao Shi, gave birth after twenty-seven months of pregnancy, and the child grew up healthy. (From *Yunjian Zazhi*.)
Zhu Danxi said: Conception results from the deficiency of one Zang organ. For example, if the Liver is deficient, its Qi is solely used to nourish the fetus and has no surplus. It cannot nourish the Liver itself; thus, Liver deficiency leads to cravings for sour foods. (From *Zhi Fa*.)
Xing Shi, whose name is lost, was the wife of Zhu Shengfei. She once had a minor illness and consulted Zhu Danxi. He said, "It is a minor illness; it will heal without medicine. However, you should not become pregnant; if you do, you will die." Her family thought he was speaking madly. A year later, Zhu's wife gave birth to a son, bringing joy to the family for having a grandson. At one month postpartum, Zhu's wife fell ill again. They urgently summoned Zhu Danxi, but he firmly refused to come, saying, "I told you last year; there is no cure." The next day, the woman died, and people found this astonishing. (From *Qiantang Xianzhi*.)
Xue Lizhai treated a pregnant woman at six months gestation who presented with fatigue, poor appetite, sallow complexion, afternoon fever, and failure of the fetus to grow, with a risk of miscarriage due to exertion. This was diagnosed as Spleen Qi deficiency. He prescribed Bazhen Tang with doubled amounts of Renshen, Baizhu, and Fuling. After more than thirty doses, her stomach function improved, the fetus stabilized, and growth resumed.
Another pregnant woman, due to anger, experienced alternating chills and fever, internal heat, afternoon fever, hypochondriac pain, and vomiting. The fetus failed to grow by the eighth month. This was caused by Liver-Spleen depression and anger. He used Liujun Zi Tang added with Chaihu, Shanzhi, Zhike, Zisu, and Jiegeng. The illness resolved, and the fetus grew.
