(Attached: Frequent Urination and Post-void Dribbling)
Li Shicai treated the wife of Vice Minister Zhang, who suffered from an inability to eat and urinary incontinence. Li stated, "The six pulses are deep and slow; the 'Water Spring' (referring to the bladder/kidney system regulating urine) is not contained, indicating a lack of Fire (Mingmen Fire deficiency)." He administered the ingredients of Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill / Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan), concurrently with Liu Junzi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) augmented with Yizhiren (Pollen Typhae / Oriental Cattail Pollen) and Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi / Cinnamon Bark). After two doses, symptoms decreased; after several doses, she recovered.
Yu Wenxue, due to prolonged worry and indignation, suddenly experienced urinary incontinence. Physicians all prescribed formulas for securing the bladder (Gupao) and tonifying the kidneys. After one month of treatment, the condition worsened. Li examined him and said, "The six pulses are soft when lightly pressed but firm when heavily pressed; this indicates latent heat within the Yin of the Liver and Kidneys." He used Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan / Tree Peony Bark) and Fuling (Poria / Poria cocos) each at 2 qian, Gancaoshao (Radix Glycyrrhizae / Licorice Root tip) at 0.6 qian, and Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis / Coptis Rhizome) at 1 qian. The decoction was prepared and mixed with Huangji Tang (Chicken Broth) for administration. After six doses, he stabilized. A physician from Wu men (Suzhou area) remarked, "Since he has recovered, he should be strongly tonified." Several days later, incontinence recurred, and he sought treatment again. Li said, "The Liver channel has had chronic stagnant heat; tonification caused the heat to flare up." Consequently, Longdan Xiegan Tang (Gentiana Decoction to Drain the Liver) was added to Chicken Broth and administered. After four doses, it stopped. Subsequently, Sijunzi Tang (Four-Gentlemen Decoction) was augmented with Huanglian and Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae / Gardenia Fruit), and he recovered after one month.
Zhang Sanxi treated a man suffering from wind-madness (psychiatric disorder). Due to excessive use of harsh purgatives such as Gansui (Radix Euphorbiae Kansui / Kansui Root), he developed urinary incontinence. He took Sangpiaoxiao San (Mantis Egg-case Powder) and recovered before finishing one dose. The formula consisted of true Sangpiaoxiao (Oötheca Mantidis / Mantis Egg-case) stir-fried with Sangpí (Cortex Mori / Mulberry Bark), Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae / Polygala Root), Changpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii / Sweet Flag Rhizome), Longgu (Os Draconis / Fossil Bone), Renshen (Radix Ginseng / Ginseng Root), Fuling (Poria), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis / Chinese Angelica Root), and Guiban (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis / Turtle Shell) calcined with vinegar. Each ingredient was processed to 1 liang, ground into powder, and taken with Renshen Tang (Ginseng Decoction), 2 qian per dose.
Xue Lizhai treated a woman suffering from frequent urination, with severe fever in the late afternoon. This was attributed to Blood deficiency and Qi stagnation of the Liver and Spleen, complicated by damp-heat. She was cured using Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) augmented with Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis / Plantago Seed).
Another woman suffered from the same condition, with fever, irritability, red face and eyes, and a pulse that was large and empty. This was identified as irritability due to Blood deficiency. She was treated with Danggui Buxue Tang (Angelica Tonifying the Blood Decoction) and recovered after several doses.
A third woman had long suffered from this condition, stubbornly believing it was a Fire syndrome, and indiscriminately used cold-natured drugs, resulting in complete manifestation of deficiency symptoms. Xue said, "This is damage to the Spleen and Stomach, affecting the meridians; the primary approach should be tonifying Middle Qi." Thus, Liu Junzi Tang and Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) were taken together, and she recovered after more than two months.
Liu Dashen, over sixty years old, was thin and weak in form and Qi, suffering from urinary incontinence, sometimes with irritability and frequent urination, internal heat, dry mouth, or cough with phlegm, asthma, dizziness. This was Lung and Kidney Qi deficiency. He was treated with Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) and Yiqi Tang to nourish the source of transformation (generating Qi). He did not believe in this method and instead took Yin-nourishing, fire-draining, and essence-astringing agents, which led to scrotal pain and sometimes difficulty in urination. He eventually resumed taking the previous medicines and recovered in less than two months.
Wang Zhizhong, while studying away from home in his prime, suddenly suffered from post-void dribbling. Upon consulting medical texts, he found a case where Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis / Chinese Gall) powder mixed with wine was curative. He took it and recovered. If a medicine matches the pathology, does it need to be complex? Nor was moxibustion necessary. (From *Zisheng Jing*.)
