This is Phlegm-Fluid (Tan Yin) disease. If incorrect tonification is applied, it will cause stagnation and obstruction in the Middle Jiao; subsequently, if reckless purgation is used, the pathogenic factor will scatter and sink into the Collaterals. This is what is meant by "unable to sweep away and eliminate [the phlegm-fluid] in one stroke," inevitably leading the pathogenic qi to diverge sideways and radiate in all directions. At this time, symptoms of coughing with blood-streaked sputum also appear.
