众人能安神矣,而不能使神昏得睡。此乃灵苑方中朱砂枣仁乳香散也,人不能用耳。辰砂一两,光明有墙壁者;

Sun Zhao treated a monk named Chong from the Xiangguo Temple who suffered from dian disease (epilepsy/mental disorder). After half a year, he had taken medicines from many famous doctors without effect. The monk's lay brother, Mr. Pan, whose family was wealthy, invited Sun Zhao to treat him. Sun Zhao said, "Let him sleep tonight, and he will be cured by tomorrow or the next day." Mr. Pan said, "Please inform me of the medication first, so I may remember your kindness in gratitude." Sun Zhao said, "Prepare some salty food, just have the master eat it, and come find me when he is thirsty." That night, the monk indeed felt thirsty. When Sun Zhao arrived, he requested a cup of warm wine, mixed one dose of medicine, and gave it to him. After a while, he asked for more wine, giving him half a cup. The monk then slept for two days and two nights before waking up, with his mental state as usual. Mr. Pan thanked Sun Zhao and asked about the treatment method. Sun Zhao said, "Others can calm the spirit but cannot induce a state of spiritual昏沉 (drowsiness/unconsciousness) to allow sleep. This is the Zhusha Zaoren Ruxiang San (Cinnabar, Sour Jujube Seed, and Frankincense Powder) from Lingyuan Fang, which people simply do not know how to use. Chen Sha (Cinnabar) 1 liang, choosing those that are bright and wall-like; Zaoren (Sour Jujube Seed) 0.5 liang, slightly stir-fried; Ruxiang (Frankincense) 0.5 liang, choosing those that are bright and translucent. Based on the amount of alcohol the patient usually drinks, first let him drink freely until drunk, but do not let him vomit. In a quiet room, take all the above medicines as one dose, mix with warm wine, prepare as one cup's worth, and instruct him to take it all at once. If the patient usually drinks little alcohol, just take the medicine with an appropriate amount of wine, then place him on a bed with pillows to sleep. For mild illness, recovery takes half a day to one day; for deep illness, two to three days. Have family members observe secretly; as long as the breathing is even and harmonious, do not wake him. Wait for him to wake up naturally, indicating the spirit and soul are settled. If startled awake, it cannot be treated again. Wu Gong, styled Zhengsu, suffered from heart disease in his youth. He took this one dose, woke up after five days, and was cured. (From *Yi Yao Gang Mu*.)
A woman in Zhejiang suffered from continuous dian kuang (mania/epilepsy). A doctor used Gudi (Melon Twig) 0.5 liang ground into powder, each dose being 1 qian, mixed with well water to fill one cup, and administered it. She immediately vomited heavily, fell into a deep sleep afterward, and was not disturbed. From then on, she was fine. (Ibid.)
Dou Cai treated a man suffering from feng kuang (wind-manial disorder) for five years, intermittent, with no effect from various methods. Dou Cai administered Shui Sheng San (Sleep-Saint Powder) 3 qian, moxa Ji Que (CV14) acupoint 30 moxibustion cones first, and administered the medicine again upon waking. He also moxa Xin Shu (BL15) 50 cones and administered Zhen Xin Dan (Heart-Calming Pill) one batch. However, since the illness had persisted for a long time, it required a major outbreak to heal. Indeed, a major outbreak occurred later, and he recovered completely in one day. Another woman developed this syndrome postpartum; she was also moxaed as described above and cured by taking Jiang Fu Tang (Ginger and Aconite Decoction).
Zhang Zihe treated a sixty-year-old man who suddenly developed kuang (mania) due to the harassment of corvée labor. He felt insects crawling in his mouth and nose, scratched his hands continuously for several years without relief, and both radial pulses were surging and large like ropes. The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian starts at the nose, crosses the forehead, receives the Taiyang meridian on the side, descends along the nasal bridge, crosses Ren Zhong (GV26), circles the lips, and meets at Cheng Jiang (CV24); thus his symptoms manifested this way. Corvée harassment belongs to Fire transformation. Fire invading the Yangming meridian causes kuang. The classics state that Yangming disease involves climbing high and singing, discarding clothes and running, cursing without avoiding relatives or strangers. Moreover, the Liver governs planning, and the Gallbladder governs decision-making. Urgent corvée means finances are insufficient; the Liver plans repeatedly but the Gallbladder cannot decide, leading to unexpressed grievance and unvented anger. Heart Fire becomes rampant and attacks the Yangming. Although the Stomach belongs to Earth, the Liver belongs to Wood, and the Gallbladder is Ministerial Fire, Fire follows Wood Qi into the Stomach, causing sudden kuang. He ordered the patient to be placed in a warm room, inducing vomiting and sweating, repeating this three times. *Neijing* states: "For Wood stagnation, vent it; for Fire stagnation, disperse it," referring precisely to this. He then used Tiao Wei Cheng Qi Tang (Regulate the Stomach and Purge the Bowels Decoction) 0.5 jin, boiled in 5 sheng of water until half-boiled, divided into three doses. The patient had over twenty bowel movements, expelling several sheng of blood-tinged fluid and stasis, leading to recovery. Later, he used Tong Sheng San (Unimpeded Salvation Powder) for regulation. Subsequent purgation exemplifies "purging Earth stagnation."
A man fell from a horse and became manic. Upon rising, his eyes stared wide, he spoke deliriously ignoring kinship, discarded clothes and ran, cursed incessantly, and possessed double strength, unable to be restrained by three men. They burned talismans, held rituals, consulted ghosts and shamans, disregarding everything. Wealth was spent on Zhusha (Cinnabar), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn), Pearl, Bingpian (Borneol), and Shexiang (Musk), leaving the house desolate. Zhang Zihe buried a cart wheel in the ground, about two zhang high, placed a medium-sized wheel on top, carved a hole in the rim resembling a foot basin, tied the patient on it to lie prone, cushioned with soft material. One person sat below operating a mechanism, stirring with a stick, rotating thousands of times. The patient vomited one or two dou of green-yellow phlegm and foam, circling the wheel several times. The patient said, "I cannot endure this, release me." They released him as requested, asked for cool water, and gave him several sheng of ice water, stopping the mania. (Ingenious fantasy, unprecedented. Master Zhang is truly a wonderful person.)
Fan Chunyou's daughter developed kuang after her husband's death. Locked in a room, she broke window frames at night, climbed trees, and ate almost all peach blossoms. By dawn, family members brought her down, and she recovered thereafter. Analysis: This is also due to fright injuring the Liver, with Phlegm carrying defeated Blood, leading to kuang. Accidentally utilizing Peach Blossom's ability to promote Phlegm discharge and dissipate stagnant Blood aligns with Zhang Zhongjing's intent of using Cheng Qi Tang for accumulated Heat kuang and Tao Ren Cheng Qi Tang for Blood Stasis kuang. (Su E's *Du Yang Bian*, cited in *Ben Cao Gang Mu*.)
A woman suffered from dian kuang for ten years. Someone taught her to use Zhen Yujin (Turmeric Root) 7 liang and Mingfan (Alum) 3 liang ground into powder, made into pills the size of wutong seeds with thin paste. Each dose was 50 pills, taken with white soup (warm water). Initially, she felt something detach from her chest and heart, feeling refreshed. After a second dose, she revived. This was caused by fright/worry, with Phlegm and Blood coagulating in the Heart orifices. Yujin enters the Heart to remove evil Blood; Alum resolves stubborn Phlegm. (*Ben Cao Gang Mu*.)
Gong Zicai treated a man beating wildly in dian kuang, running and shouting onto roofs. He used Gudi San (Melon Twig Powder) to vomit out several sheng of foul phlegm, then used Cheng Qi Tang to purge the bowels, resulting in recovery.
A man suffered from Qi Xin Feng (Qi Heart Wind), which is kuang caused by Phlegm confusing the Heart orifices. He used Zhen Huarui Shi (Flower Ore Stone) and Huang (Sulfur), quenched in wine once, ground into fine powder. Each dose was 1 qian, taken with yellow wine.
A woman developed kuang, discarding clothes and running, jumping over walls, ignoring kinship, speaking deliriously, unable to be caught. Doctors were helpless. Gong instructed family members to splash cold water indiscriminately, countless times, until she collapsed. Pulse diagnosis showed all six positions were wiry, rapid, and forceful, indicating extreme Heat generating Wind. He used Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Unimpeded Salvation Powder) plus Sheng Dihuang (Rehmannia Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Taoren (Peach Kernel), Honghua (Safflower), and Danpi (Moutan Cortex). Three doses brought peace. Later, she took Qu Feng Zhibao Dan (Wind-Expelling Precious Treasure Pill) and fully recovered.
Ling Hanzhang treated a wealthy widow in Jinhua who developed kuang in her youth, standing naked in the wild. Ling observed, "This is called losing the mind. I will needle her Heart area. If the Heart is correct, she will know shame. Cover her with a curtain, comfort her with kind words, relieve her embarrassment, and it will not flare up." He ordered two people to hold her, sprayed cold water, and then needleed. It indeed cured her. (*History of Ming*. Xiong's note: Although theoretically sound, it may be difficult to replicate.)
Sun Wen Yuan treated Wu Mou, who developed dian kuang due to depression from failing an exam because of malaria despite astrological predictions of success. Symptoms included sadness, singing, clapping, stomping, and cursing without avoiding kinship. Diagnosis: Pale face with bluish tint, Cun positions short and choppy, Guan position wiry on the left and slippery on the right, Chi positions level. This indicates insufficiency of Spirit in Heart and Lungs, high aspirations unfulfilled, stagnation not dispersing, fluids generating Phlegm instead of Blood, and excessive attack on Phlegm damaging Heart Spirit nourishment, leading to confusion. Classics say: "If the Ruler is unclear, the twelve meridians are endangered." Therefore, tonification is needed, gathering Spirit, clearing Phlegm. Used Zaoren (Sour Jujube Seed), Renshen (Ginseng), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Licorice), Danshen (Salvia), Danggui (Angelica) to tonify Heart and calm Spirit; Huanglian (Coptis), Zhuru (Bamboo Shavings) to clear Liver/Gallbladder Fire; Xuanshen (Scrophularia) assisting. Externally prepared pills with Longchi (Dragon Bone), Zhenzhu (Pearl), Lingyangjiao (Antelope Horn), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Danning (Phlegm-resolving Star), Tianma (Gastrodia), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), Chen Sha (Cinnabar), Quanxie (Scorpion), Bingpian (Borneol), Huanglian, Gancao paste, coated with Jinbo (Gold Leaf). Recovery through regulation.
Zhang Luyu treated Huang Wenxue with delirium and falling, occurring every 6-7 days or 2-3 times daily, vomiting saliva and blood foam, recovering after half a day. (Symptoms similar to epilepsy). Day and night, he saw two ghostly maidservants haunting him, sometimes unconscious, sometimes delirious, with frequent essence loss. Medicines like Dongdong (Winter Melon/Winter Bamboo), Erdi (Rehmannia), Lianqiao, Jinyingzi, Shilian failed, causing diarrhea and anorexia. Diagnosis: Cun pulse strong, Chi pulse weak, front large back small, pressing makes it vanish, lifting makes it appear, indicating floating/scattered Spirit Qi. Prescribed Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) plus Longchi, Changpu (Acorus), Yuanzhi (Polygala), delivered with Yangzheng Dan (Nourishing Righteousness Pill), administered intermittently. After 6-7 doses, delirium and falling ceased, ghosts disappeared. Only nocturnal emission remained as a chronic issue, treated with Pingbu Zhenxin Dan (Level Tonification Heart-Calming Pill) for two months until cured. (Similar to the previous Sun case.)
A woman shouted curses, sang and laughed irregularly, seemingly possessed, with one eye and corner of mouth pulled up. Treatment as kuang or Xin Feng failed. It was an old Tou Feng (Head Wind) condition caused by Wind-Phlegm. Used Xiongxin San (Ligusticum and Asarum Powder) plus Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia). Instant recovery.
Gynecologist Zheng Qingshan, frustrated by unsuccessful treatments, pondered all night, aggravated by sarcastic remarks from other doctors. At dawn, the patient recovered. Mixed feelings of anger and joy arose. The host set a banquet, but the mocker had fled. Anger had no outlet, leading to sudden shouting and kuang. (Thus, medical practitioners are pitiable. Ambitious scholars should avoid this. Some say: 'Not knowing medicine is not the words of sages.') Colleagues' treatments failed. One day, Wang Dao from Ophthalmology visited, examined prescriptions, destroyed them all. Said, "This is deficiency with Spirit not residing in its mansion. How can Phlegm-resolving, Qi-regulating, Heat-clearing drugs work?" Ordered 2 liang of premium Renshen (Ginseng), decocted alone. Immediate relief. Three doses cured it. Followed by Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) for regulation. (*Yi Tong*.)
Li Shicai treated Zhang Shaochun's daughter. Sadness over losing a child, combined with thunderstorm fear, led to crying, laughing, talking to herself, cursing, seeing ghosts. Heart pulse floating and slippery, others deep and fine. Deficiency of Qi and Blood, worry/fright injuring Heart, Heart injury generates Heat, Heat accumulates generating Wind. Used Guntan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill) delivered with Jiegeng (Platycodon), Yanhusuo (Corydalis), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Xingren (Apricot Seed) decoction. Expelled much Phlegm accumulation, cured. (*Yi Tong*. Xiong's note: Deep/fine pulse suggests Qi/Blood stagnation. If truly deficient, why did this harsh drug work?)
Gong Zicai treated a 20-year-old unmarried girl who hallucinated biting men, then fainted, discharged cold semen from the vagina, waking instantly. Jueyin Liver pulse wiry extending past Cun, indicating Yin excess desiring men but unable to obtain. Ordered parents to beat her severely with sticks, making her focus on pain to lose desire. Later cured by Yiqing Wan (Suppress Green Pill). (Xiong's note: Treatment is stern, superior to medicine.)
Han Yifeng treated a youth in Yonghe with feng kuang, untreatable by hundred methods. Father/brothers bound him and sought treatment. Han needled Baihui (GV20) 20 times. Sat in court, summoned the youth, ordered removal of bindings, struck him twice with a cane. Upon finishing, he woke up, unaware of previous events. (*Shenzhen Xinfa*. Xiong's note: This is possession syndrome.)
A woman developed feng kuang because her husband was critically ill. When he recovered, she became ill, sleeping/eating nothing day or night, running naked, climbing heights/kilns, uncontrollable. Sought Han's treatment. As he approached, she was jumping naked, suddenly found clothes to cover herself, composed herself, waiting. Neighbor aunt puzzled. Soon Han arrived, ordered her to kneel, she knelt and received needles. (Han was county magistrate at the time.) Needled Baihui (GV20) one point, Guiyan (Ghost Eye) two points, 21 needles each. After needling, she kowtowed thanking him: "I dare not haunt anymore, beg for mercy, I leave." Spoke then woke up. (Xiong's note: Both cases relied on magistrate authority and skillful needling, causing spirits to retreat. Thus, having talent requires the right position to achieve great success.)
Chai Yuqing treated Madam Chuan Jiayan, wife of Shaotingzhao, who suddenly suffered dian syndrome. Diagnosis revealed chest stagnation. Prescribed Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) plus Yujin (Turmeric Root), Xiangfu (Cyperus). Two doses cured dementia appearance. Spirit still dull/silent. Used same formula as powder, 3 liang, taken with Lingyuan Fang, cured. (Lingyuan Fang seen in Sun Zhao case.)
Wang Haizang treated Xu Shi with Yang Jue Kuang Nu (Yang Reversal Manic Rage), cursing without avoiding kinship, crying/singing, six pulses weak on lift/press, body surface ice-cold, loud screaming during episodes. Jiegu said: "Deprive food and it ends." Withheld food, then used Da Cheng Qi Tang (Major Order the Yellow Springs Decoction). Purged several sheng of intestinal filth, kuang calmed slightly. Recurred days later, purged again, repeated 5-7 times. Passed several dou of stool, illness eased, body warmed, pulse returned, good recovery. This is Yilao's Food-Deprivation Method. (*Da Huan*, *Gang Mu* also collected.)
