(Also known as Gui Zhu disease.)
Xue Lizhai treated Yang Gongxing of the Jin Yi Wei (Embroidered Uniform Guard). The entire family was avoiding a disaster, but one servant failed to take shelter due to drunkenness. Soon after, the servant's mental state became confused and dull, with blue bruises covering his whole body. Xue Lizhai ordered decoction of Lonicerae Japonicae Herba (Jinyin Teng) soup, which cured him immediately upon administration.
Another woman suddenly fell into a coma, speaking deliriously. She claimed that because she had previously plotted to default on a debt to someone, a deity blamed her and was having her arrested and taken to the City God Temple for interrogation. Her ankles, knees, and kidney areas were all swollen and bruised blue; the pain was unbearable, and she cried out in agony. She regained consciousness the next day, but the pain persisted. Xue Lizhai prescribed over one tael of Lonicerae Japonicae Herba (Jinyin Teng), decocted in water. She recovered immediately after taking it.
A woman who entered an ancient tomb suffered from the aforementioned symptoms. She was revived immediately after being administered Zijin Ding (Purple Gold Pill). Yu Zihua, Commissioner of Communications, and Wang Yongzhi, Grand Secretary of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices, both died while attending funerals at mourning households. (Note by Xiong: I treated the son of the Shao family and the daughter of the Tu family, who both contracted this illness while attending funerals, and cured them both with Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pill).)
Xie Shitai’s *Shanfan Fang* treats Shi Zhu (Corpse Transmission) characterized by seeing corpses or hearing crying sounds. It prescribes taking discarded mats belonging to the dead found on roadsides. Cut a piece three cun long (approximately the width of a tiger's mouth), boil in three sheng of water until reduced to one sheng, and administer orally for immediate effect. Note: This follows the tradition of using "dead man's pillows." (From *Bencao Gangmu* / Compendium of Materia Medica.)
In the Gengshen year, a woman in my household dreamed of two dark-skinned servants, one ahead and one behind, holding an object. The front one asked, "Have you arrived?" The back one replied, "Yes." Then a blow struck with a cracking sound, causing her to be pinned down by a nightmare (Ya Mo). Upon waking, she felt sharp, unbearable pain at a specific point in her heart region and remained faint and dizzy for about an hour. I suddenly recalled that Shenjing Dan (Divine Spirit Pill) treats this specific symptom. I took three pills and had her ingest them. After a short while, she was free of illness. She reported that after taking the medicine, the pain stopped and her spirit cleared, returning to normal. In subsequent years, if acquaintances showed slight signs of evil qi invasion, administering one or two doses proved invariably effective. This formula is found in *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) and is a key remedy for wind-stroke. However, in recent times, Cengqing (Azurite) and Citrigyri Magnetitum (Magnetite) are scarce, making preparation difficult. (From *Yixue Gangmu* / Outline of Medical Knowledge.)
Dou Cai treated a woman whose Heart Qi was deficient, causing young men to attach to her body every night. Pulse diagnosis revealed no abnormalities in the six pulses. Dou Cai ordered moxibustion on the Shangwan (CV13) acupoint, fifty moxa cones. At night, when the ghosts came, they could not approach within five chi of the bed. She then took Jiangfu Tang (Ginger and Aconite Decoction) and Zhenshen Dan (Heart-Calming Pill) and recovered in five days.
The wife of a nobleman was possessed by a ghost; various methods failed. A Daoist priest wrote a Tianyi Fu (Heavenly Physician Talisman) and presented it to the Jade Emperor, but it also failed. Dou Cai ordered her to take Shuisheng San (Sleeping Sage Powder), three qian, followed by moxibustion on the Jueque (CV14) acupoint, fifty cones, and further moxibustion on the Shimen (CV5) acupoint, three hundred cones. By the time two hundred cones were applied, the patient opened her eyes normally. She then took Jiangfu Tang and Zhenshen Dan and recovered.
A woman suffering from Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption) had her True Qi nearly depleted and was possessed by a ghost. Dou Cai used large moxa fires on the Guanyuan (CV4) acupoint. The patient found the pain intolerable. Therefore, he had her first take Shuisheng San, three qian, before continuing moxibustion up to one hundred and fifty cones, after which she woke up. Through repeated administration and moxibustion, totaling three hundred cones, the evil spirits departed, and the consumption disease improved.
Gao Shier, a commoner from Yue, lacking food due to poor harvests, brought his wife and children to Deqing. His wife worked as a wet nurse in the household of Li Shen in Xiuzhou Cangde. Gao Shier received money and returned to Yue, where he died. Li's servant, Xu Ba, was traveling in Xiuzhou and later returned to Deqing via an official boat. When Li Shen visited again, the wet nurse exhibited trance-like states and delirious speech, imitating her deceased husband's voice, scolding her late self for not providing spiritual offerings for her husband. Li Shen asked how she came to be in this state. She said, "I came back conveniently following Servant Xu's boat." Li Shen summoned a shaman, but before he arrived, they casually burned Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu) smoke to fumigate. The ghost hastily said, "I fear the smoke and dare not stay," and then fell silent. The wet nurse's illness also subsided. Nowadays, when people encounter malignant influences, they must use Cangzhu, as it is feared by evil ghosts. (From *Leibian*, citing *Yishuo*.)
Li Xingjian's niece, widowed from the Ge family, remarried Zhu Xun. She suddenly fell ill with symptoms resembling wind-stroke. The recluse Cao Jubai examined her and said, "This is an evil disease." He then used acupuncture needles to prick approximately two cun above the swelling on her foot. After the duration of brewing a cup of tea, the woman woke up and said, "The illness has ceased." She explained that whenever the illness occurred, she dreamed of her deceased husband leading her through forests. That morning, the dream recurred, but her deceased husband was pricked by thorns between his calves and could not escape. Panicking and tossing about, he managed to return. Cao Jubai smiled and said, "The acupoint I just needled was Baxie (EX-LE5)." (From *Suoshuo*.)
