Ke Wu (Sudden Invasion by Alien Qi), belonging to the category of Zhong E (Sudden Attack by Evil Qi), is often contracted suddenly outside on roads or near doors. It causes severe colicky pain and distension in the heart and abdomen, with rebellious Qi rushing to the chest and heart. If not treated immediately, it can be fatal. The following are methods for rescue.
Apply moxibustion to Renzhong (GV26, Philtrum) thirty moxa cones, ensuring the moxa is applied close to the base of the nasal column. Soak Oryza sativa var. japonica (Jingmi, glutinous rice) in cold water, extract one to two sheng of the juice, and have the patient drink it. If the patient has trismus (lockjaw), use an instrument to forcibly open the mouth.
Another prescription: Grind inkstone soot, mix with water, and administer one qianbi (a small measuring spoon) orally.
Another method: Fill a copper or earthenware vessel with hot water and place it on the abdomen. If it cools down, remove clothing so the vessel touches the skin directly. If it becomes very cold, replace with fresh hot water until recovery.
Another method: Place three layers of clothing on the abdomen, put a copper vessel on top of the clothes, and burn a small amount of cogon grass (Imperata cylindrica, Maocao) inside the vessel. Add more grass as needed when it burns out, but do not add too much at once. Stop when recovered.
Another method: Measure the width of the patient's mouth horizontally with a rope, and use this measurement to mark points around the umbilicus (one point above, below, left, and right). Apply three moxa cones to each point, igniting all four fires simultaneously to achieve cure.
Another method: Measure the mouth width horizontally, fold it in half, place one end at the epigastrium (heart area), and apply five moxa cones to the other end.
Another method: Mix Cinnabar (Zhendan, Zhu Sha) one cunbi with honey three he, and take orally. If there is trismus, pry the teeth open to administer the medicine.
Bian Que had methods for treating Ke Wu involving emergency talismans and drinking salt soup, which are likely beyond the capability of ordinary people, so they are not recorded here. This disease is what modern people call Zhong E (Sudden Attack by Evil Qi), similar to sudden death or Gui Ji (Ghost Strike). Treatments for these conditions are often used interchangeably. For those already deceased...
Crush fresh Acorus tatarinowii (Changpu, Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii) root, squeeze out the juice, and hold it in the mouth for immediate cure.
For sudden Ke Wu where the body is stiff and unable to speak: Burn two pieces of Platycodon grandiflorus (Jiegeng, Radix Platycodonis), grind into powder, and take orally.
Another method: Equal parts of Powdered Asarum europaeum (Xixin, Herba Asari) and Cinnamomum cassia (Gui, Cortex Cinnamomi), place in the mouth.
Another method: Mix chicken comb blood with Pearl Zhenzhu (Zhenzhu, Margarita), form pills the size of mung beans, place in the mouth, administering three or four pills for cure.
If sudden trismus occurs: Powder raw Aconitum carmichaelii (Fuzi, Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), place in a tube, and blow the powder under the tongue for immediate cure.
Another method: Mix human blood with Pearl, form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds, administer two pills by prying teeth open and placing them in the throat to swallow.
Hua Tuo treated cases of sudden Zhong E with shortness of breath approaching death. Apply fourteen moxa cones to the hair tufts behind the nails of both big toes. Cure is immediate. If not cured, apply another fourteen cones. The previous method for sudden death involved thirty-seven cones, which is already documented.
Also from Zhang Zhongjing's essential prescriptions: Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) four liang, Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) seventy seeds, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) one liang. Boil in eight sheng of water until three sheng remain. Divide and have the patient swallow gradually. This treats various forms of Gan Wu (Invasion by Alien Qi).
Another method: One handful of Allium tuberosum (Jiu Gen, Root of Chinese Chive), twenty Strychnos nux-vomica? No, Wumei (Wumei, Fructus Mume/Prunus mume), and half a jin of Zanthoxylum bungeanum (Zhuyu, Fructus Zanthoxyli). Boil in ten dou of water. Insert the patient's comb into the boiling liquid three times until it boils over. If the comb floats, the patient lives; if it sinks, the patient dies. Boil until three sheng remain and give to the patient to drink.
Another method: Cinnamomum cassia (Guizhi, Ramulus Cinnamomi) one liang, Zingiberis Rhizoma (Shengjiang, Rhizoma Zingiberis) three liang, Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi, Fructus Gardeniae) fourteen seeds, Fermented Soybean (Douchi, Semen Sojae Praeparatum) five he. Crush, stir with three sheng of wine, simmer slightly, remove dregs, and take in one dose for cure.
Fei Shi Zou Ma Tang (Flying Corpse Running Horse Decoction): Crotonis Fructus (Badou, Semen Crotonis) two seeds, Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) two seeds. Wrap in cotton cloth, crush until broken, place in two he of hot water, and squeeze with fingers to extract juice. Administer immediately. Bowel movement should occur shortly after ingestion, leading to cure. Take in small doses; this treats various Fei Shi (Flying Corpse) and Gui Ji (Ghost Strike) conditions.
Various pills and powders are also included in the Emergency Medicines section. "Ke" refers to alien qi; "Wu" refers to invasion, meaning alien qi invades the person. This is generally evil qi. Treatment often leads to recovery. Although this qi comes like a ghostly poison or harsh pathogen, sudden contact causes it to weaken and cease, so it does not act like natural evil qi that enters the body and attacks zang-fu organs and meridians. After recovery, further treatment is advisable to eliminate residual pathogenic factors; otherwise, it may become a chronic issue causing recurrent episodes.
