Formulas for Treating Acute Wind Stroke and Emergencies. Moxibustion at the center of the transverse crease on the plantar aspect of both big toes, with the number of moxa cones (Zhuang) corresponding to the patient's age. There is also a separate Xuming Decoction (Cure-all Decoction).
If the pathogenic toxin is urgent and the patient cannot walk, with internal tendons tense, moxibustion should be applied to the medial malleolus; if external tendons are tense, moxibustion should be applied above the lateral malleolus, twenty Zhuang. If there is swelling and bi-syndrome (painful obstruction), for deficiency patterns, take Bai Lian (Bletilla Rhizome) two fen, Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root) one fen. Pound into powder and administer half a Dao Gui dose, up to three times daily.
If the eyeballs roll upward, apply three Zhuang of moxibustion behind both eyes.
If the patient does not recognize people, apply seven Zhuang to the costal margin and seven Zhuang to the head. The costal margin here refers to the curved area of the small ribs.
If the patient cannot speak, apply fifty Zhuang to the second or fifth "chui" (a specific anatomical landmark or point). There is another formula for aphasia in later chapters.
Another formula: Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean) and Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit), each one sheng. Add five sheng of water, boil to obtain two sheng. Administer in small, frequent doses.
If the eyes are retracted and the jaw is clenched, with severe abdominal pain, apply fourteen Zhuang of moxibustion to the first transverse line below the scrotum. There is also a formula involving the administration of an ointment.
If the patient runs wildly attempting to stab others, attempts suicide, curses incessantly, or speaks as if seeing ghosts, apply one Zhuang to the red fleshy corners of the mouth, five Zhuang to the flexor creases of both elbows, and three Zhuang to the middle of the back blades. Repeat this moxibustion three days later for three sessions. This is the secret method of Cang Gong; additionally, thirty Zhuang should be applied to the seam below the scrotum. There is another formula for treating manic disorders.
If the patient goes mad, take axle grease the size of a chicken egg, warm pure sour vinegar, and stir vigorously until the grease dissolves. Administer the entire mixture.
If the patient feels heart vexation and confusion, abdominal distension and pain, or experiences intermittent syncope followed by recovery, take five sheng of soil from under the cooking pot, pound and sieve it, mix with eight sheng of cold water, and drink all the juice. If the mouth is clenched, force it open and pour the medicine in using a bamboo tube to ensure swallowing; the patient will recover, which is excellent.
If the body is arched backward like a bow, limbs are uncoordinated, and the patient is vexed and restless to the point of near death, mix five sheng of clear wine with one sheng of white chicken excrement. Pound and sieve, then mix and toss a thousand times. Drink the mixture: adults take one sheng, three times daily; children take five he. The disease will resolve.
If the head and body are in pain everywhere, with turning over, vexation, and fullness leading to near death, take head dirt the size of a soybean and ingest it. Also, store soybeans in a cloth bag, steam them, and apply hot compresses to the painful areas. Make two bags and alternate them. If soybeans are unavailable, rat nest soil can be steamed and used for hot compresses.
If only the abdomen suffers severe pain, take half a jin of salt, roast it until dry, place it in the mouth, and drink two sheng of hot soup. Vomiting will occur, and the patient will recover.
Another formula: Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root) six fen, Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) three liang sliced. Boil in two sheng of water to obtain one sheng. Divide into two doses.
For limbs that do not move, burn green cloth to produce smoke and fumigate the painful area using a vessel with a small opening.
Another formula: Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean) three sheng, water nine sheng, boil to obtain three sheng. Divide into three doses. Also, take one sheng of Dou Chi, lightly roast it, store in a bag, and soak in three sheng of wine for three nights. Warm and drink; slight intoxication is ideal.
If there is pulling pain and numbness in the body at non-fixed locations, take a handful of dried Ai Ye (Mugwort Leaf), form into pills, place under a clay steamer, seal other holes leaving only one opening. Place the painful area over the opening and fumigate with burning mugwort for one shichen (two hours); it will heal.
Another formula: Take rotten wood shavings, boil in water until thick and hot. Soak the painful area; it is effective.
If the mouth is clenched shut, take five sheng of soybeans, roast until yellow-black, soak in five sheng of wine to extract the juice. Force the mouth open with an object and pour in the liquid; induce sweating upon completion.
Another formula: Du Huo (Angelica Pubescens) four liang, Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) two liang. Boil in two sheng of wine and water mixture to obtain one and a half sheng. Divide into three doses, administer by forcing the mouth open. Cover warmly and lie down, use fire to induce sweating.
If the body is straight and cannot bend or stretch, cut Huang Bai Bai Pi (Yellow-white Phellodendron Bark), boil in six sheng of wine and water to obtain two sheng. Remove dregs, adjust temperature, and drink in small frequent doses.
Another formula: Scrape Zhi Pi (Aurantii Fructus Perforatus Bark) to obtain one sheng, soak in one sheng of wine overnight. Drink five he to one sheng; when the wine is finished, prepare more. The disease will resolve.
If there is facial deviation (mouth skewing), apply moxibustion between the horizontal creases of the mouth corners. Remove the moxa when heat is felt; it will heal immediately. Do not use excessive moxa. If the mouth deviates to the left, moxa the right corner; if to the right, moxa the left corner. Also, apply one pill-sized moxa cone to the joint of the middle finger (left side for right deviation, right side for left deviation). Another method for treating facial deviation follows later.
Another formula: Take Kong Qing (Azurite) powder, place in the mouth, and swallow; it heals immediately. Yao agrees.
Another formula: Rub spider eggs on Jiache (Stomach Meridian point ST6) on the tense/affected cheek. Stop when alignment is restored. Alternatively, rub while facing fire.
Another formula: Mu Li (Oyster Shell), Fan Shi (Alumen), Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root), and Zao Zhong Huang Tu (Soil from the center of a stove) in equal parts. Pound into powder, mix with the comb blood of a three-year-old rooster, and apply urgently. Hold water nearby; when the face begins to return to normal, wash off the medicine immediately. Reapply if necessary until healed.
Another formula: Apply Bie Jia (Tartar Testudinis) and Wu Tou (Aconitum Carmichaelii Dehan Root) topically. Remove when correction is achieved.
If the four limbs are cold, with clear sweat, rolling in pain, crying and calling, take Gui (Cinnamon Twig) one liang, crush it, boil in three sheng of water to obtain two sheng. Remove dregs, adjust temperature, and drink completely.
For joint pain, take Pu Huang (Typha Pollen) eight liang, Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root) one liang (processed). Pound into powder. Administer one Qian Bi dose, three times daily, gradually increasing to one Fang Cun Bi dose.
If bone joints are painful and vexed, unable to bend or stretch, painful upon touch, short of breath with sweating, or prone to swelling, take Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root) two liang, Gui (Cinnamon Twig) four liang, Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) three liang, Gan Cao (Licorice Root) two liang. Boil in six sheng of water to obtain three sheng. Divide into three doses; healing occurs with sweating.
If struck by sudden wind with profuse white sweat resembling water, take Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) and Gan Cao (Licorice Root) in equal parts. Pound, administer one Fang Cun Bi dose with wine. Move forward one zhang (approx. 3.3 meters) between doses.
If struck by mild wind with flaccid limbs, take Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean) three sheng, water nine sheng, boil to obtain three sheng. Divide into three doses, twice daily. Can also be soaked in wine and boiled for drinking.
If sudden wind stroke paralysis occurs, with inability to control the body, aphasia, confusion, and loss of recognition, Chen Yuan Li Gu Gao (Chen Yuan Cat Bone Ointment) is essential and found in the Emergency Medicine Formulas section.
