The "Five Corpse" diseases (including Fei Shi [Flying Corpse], Dun Shi [Escaping Corpse], Feng Shi [Wind Corpse], Chen Shi [Sinking Corpse], and Shi Zhu [Corpse Transmission], for which the currently recorded formulas provide combined treatment) manifest as abdominal pain, abdominal distension and urgency, dyspnea, rebellious Qi rushing upward to the chest and heart, attacking laterally into both hypochondriac regions, or presenting with protruding masses, or drawing sensations in the lower back and spine. The following are formulas for combined treatment of these conditions.
Apply moxibustion three cun posterior to the nipple, 14 moxa cones (Zhuang), on the left side for males and the right side for females. If symptoms persist, increase the number of moxa cones until recovery is achieved.
Another formula: Apply moxibustion three cun below the xiphoid process (Xin Xia), 60 moxa cones.
Yet another formula: Apply moxibustion one cun below the nipple, on the side corresponding to the location of the illness, increasing the number of moxa cones until recovery is achieved.
Yet another formula: Press the painful area with the tips of four fingers. Apply several moxa cones at the lower edge of the fingers, inducing pain. Simultaneously, press the Renzhong (GV26) acupoint in the philtrum with fingernails, and press one cun below the xiphoid process. Increase the number of moxa cones to achieve recovery.
Yet another formula: Break an egg white and swallow it in one go. For patients with closed mouths, insert the egg white into the throat and shake/swallow it; recovery will be immediate.
Yet another formula: Break seven egg whites and swallow them in one go. If this is not feasible, administer in two doses.
Yet another formula: Process the root of Phytolacca acinosa (Shanglu), heat it, store it in a cloth bag, and apply hot compresses alternately. Replace when cool. Although named "Five Corpses," their patterns are generally similar with minor differences (Fei Shi [Flying Corpse] wanders through the skin and penetrates the Zang-Fu organs, causing stabbing pain upon onset with unpredictable changes; Dun Shi [Escaping Corpse] attaches to bones and muscles, attacking blood vessels, making proximity difficult during attacks, often triggered by witnessing funerals or hearing mourning; Feng Shi [Wind Corpse] agitates the limbs, obscuring the location of pain, causing dizziness and confusion upon onset, often triggered by wind and snow; Chen Shi [Sinking Corpse] knots within the Zang-Fu organs, impacting the heart and hypochondrium, causing cramping pain upon onset, often triggered by cold; Shi Zhu [Corpse Transmission] causes heaviness of the whole body, mental confusion, and a sensation of limb paralysis, leading to severe deterioration during solar term changes. This specific condition has a separate post-treatment hot compress method). Generally, the Five Corpses are attributed to the guidance of dead spirits within the body, jointly causing disease. Although scriptures contain methods to eliminate them, they are not easily accessible to laypeople. Here, I compile the essential points to remedy the inadequacy of common formulas.
Realgar (Xionghuang) 1 liang, Garlic (Dasuan) 1 liang. Mix them into a pill-sized ball. Dissolve in 2 ge of warm wine. Take orally. Recovery occurs shortly after. If not recovered, prepare and take again. Patients who have contracted this should keep this medicine on hand.
Another formula: Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) and Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi), equal parts. Grind into powder. Take a pinch measured by a salted finger, stir-fry until it turns into a green powder. Mix with water and take orally; recovery follows immediately.
Another formula: Crush Tribulus terrestris seeds (Jili Zi), make honey pills. Size like broad beans. Take 2 pills, three times daily.
Another formula: Japonica Rice (Jingmi) 2 sheng. Add 6 sheng of water. Boil once and take orally.
Another formula: Pig Fat (Zhufang) 8 he. Decoct in a copper vessel until slightly boiling. Add Vinegar (Ku Jiu) 8 he. Mix well and take orally in one dose; recovery follows immediately.
Another formula: Dig a small pit, fill it with water, stir thoroughly, and take the juice orally.
Another formula: Collect thatch from the four corners of a roof. Place in a copper vessel. Cover the abdomen with three strips of red cloth. Place the vessel containing the thatch on the cloth. Burn the thatch to generate heat. Move the heat source along the path of pain. Itching in the lower area indicates recovery. If using a tiled roof, shave off the wood from the four corner pillars and burn them; this is also highly effective.
Another formula: Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) 1 chi, Ginger 1 liang, Croton Seed (Badou) 3 pieces. Pound together into powder. Mix with vinegar to form a paste. Apply to the area affected by the "Corpse." When dry, recovery is achieved.
Another formula: Root of Sapium sebiferum (Wujiu), crushed, 2 sheng. Decoct until thick. Strain. Further reduce the decoction to obtain 5 sheng of liquid. Add 1 liang of water. Take 5 he to 1 sheng orally. This is effective.
Another formula: Stems and leaves of Lonicera japonica (Rendong), crushed, several hu. Decoct until thick. Reduce the juice. Take an amount equivalent to one egg yolk per dose. Take two to three times daily for best results.
Another formula: Scalded Human Hair (Luofa), burned. Equal parts of Apricot Kernel (Xingren). Pound into a paste. Form pills. Take with wine. Pill size like Toona sinensis seeds (Tongzi). Take 3 pills, five to six times daily.
Another formula: Fossilized Bone (Longgu) 3 fen, Veratrum nigrum (Lilu) 2 fen, Croton Seed (Badou) 1 fen. Pound together. Mix with clear well water (Jinghua Shui). Take pills the size of hemp seeds. Prepare according to standard methods.
Another formula: Lacquer Tree Leaf (Qiyè), dried in the sun. Pound into powder. Take with wine.
Another formula: Liver of Alligator (Tuogan), one piece. Cook thoroughly, slice. Consume completely. Can also be eaten with garlic shoots.
Another formula: Cut off the head of a soft-shelled turtle (Bie), burn to ash. Take with water. Divide into three doses. Expulsion of meat-like material is expected. If not fully expelled, prepare again upon recurrence.
Another formula: Realgar (Xionghuang) 1 fen, Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi) 15 pieces, White Peony Root (Shaoyao) 1 liang. Add 3 sheng of water. Decoct to obtain 1.5 sheng. Divide into two doses.
Another formula: Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi) 14 pieces. Burn to ash and take orally.
Another formula: Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) and Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi), each 1 liang. Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) 2 fen. Croton Seed (Badou) 30 pieces (remove hearts, use raw). Pound and sieve. Mix with honey and pound ten thousand times. Take 2 pills, size like small beans. This medicine treats all ailments.
Another formula for treating death caused by Fei Shi [Flying Corpse] entering the abdomen with stabbing pain. Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao), Aconitum poison (Shewang), and Wuzhu Wan are all excellent medicines, detailed in larger formularies. This formula treats sudden occurrence of a foreign body in the skin, resembling a toad, which descends into the abdomen overnight, remaining stationary like a cup, causing unbearable pulling pain, leading to death after several days.
Croton Seed (Badou) 14 pieces, Gentian Root (Longdan) 1 liang, Pinellia Tuber (Banxia) and Earth Melon Seeds (Tugua Zi), each 1 liang. Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) 1.5 jin. Pound together. Store in two cloth bags. Steam until hot. Apply alternately as hot compresses. Alternatively, decoct and drink, taking small amounts orally.
This formula originally appeared in miscellaneous treatments. The disease name is Yin Shi [Yin Corpse]. Patients with this condition often die.
