[Background Information]
Book: *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* (Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies)
Author: Ge Hong
Dynasty: Eastern Jin
Chapter: Chapter 67: Formulas for Treating Sudden Irritability Due to Overdose of Medication / Chapter 68: Formulas for Rescuing and Resolving Poisoning by Various Drugs
Category: Formulas
[English Translation]
**Formulas for Treating Sudden Irritability Due to Overdose of Medication and Severe Poisoning with a Desire to Die**
Scrape a small amount of soil from the base of the east wall, mix it with one or two sheng (approx. 200-400 ml) of water, and drink it; this is effective.
Another formula: Dig a pit under the eaves, two chi (approx. 60 cm) square and three chi deep. Pour seven sheng of water into the pit. Agitate the water with an object until foam appears, take one sheng of this foamy water, and drink it. If symptoms do not resolve, prepare another batch.
Yet another formula: Crush Indigofera tinctoria (Lancao, 蓝草/蓼蓝) and drink several sheng of its juice. If Indigofera is unavailable, wash green silk fabric and drink the washing liquid; this is also acceptable.
**Formula for Extreme Irritability Due to Improper Dosage of Medication**
Drink fresh Puerariae Radix (Sheng Gegen, 生葛根) juice; this is highly effective. If fresh root is unavailable, grind dried Puerariae Radix (Gegen, 葛根) into powder, administer with five he (approx. 100 ml) of water, or boil and drink it.
Another formula: Swallow several chicken egg yolks; recovery will follow. If there is no improvement, repeat the administration.
**For Overdose of Mineral Drugs (Shiyao, 石药)**
Crack white duck feces into powder, mix with water, and administer; the patient will recover.
Another formula: Rhizoma et Radix Rhei (Dahuang, 大黄) 3 liang, Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao, 芒硝) 2 liang, and Juice of Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Sheng Dihuang Zhi, 生地黄汁) 5 sheng. Boil until 3 sheng remain, divide into three doses. Once bowel movement occurs, the patient recovers.
**For Incessant Vomiting After Sudden Medication Intake**
Drink one sheng of newly drawn cold water; vomiting will cease.
**For Diarrhea Caused by Crotonis Fructus (Badou, 巴豆) in Medication**
Powder dried Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, 干姜) and Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连). Administer one fangcun bi (approx. 2-3 grams) per dose; the patient recovers.
Another formula: Boil soybean juice (Douzhi, 豆汁) to one sheng and drink it; the patient recovers.
**Supplementary Formula**
From *Waitai Miyao* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold for Emergencies): Treats overdose of medication and severe poisoning with irritability and a desire to die.
Burn rhinoceros horn, powder it, and administer one fangcun bi with water.
**Formula for Death Caused by Eating Gelsemii Radix (Yege, 野葛/Gelsemium elegans)**
Use an object to pry open the mouth, take three chicken eggs, mix them, and swallow. Within moments, the poison will be vomited out.
Another formula: Drink one sheng of warm pig lard (Zhuzhi, 猪脂).
Another formula: Catch a live duck, sever its head at the mouth, and drip the blood into the victim's mouth. Swallowing the blood restores life. If the mouth cannot be opened, take a large bamboo tube with nodes removed. Insert one end into the victim's armpit and pour water into the other end. Change the water frequently. Within moments, the mouth will open, allowing medication to be administered. If treating multiple victims, insert tubes into both armpits and the umbilicus; this is very effective.
Another formula: Drink large amounts of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) juice; this is excellent.
**Yao’s Formula for Poisoning by Various Toxins and Death from Yege**
Mix fresh human urine with human feces, squeeze out one sheng of juice, and administer in one dose. Life returns immediately upon entering the stomach; this juice resolves all toxins better than any other.
**For Death from Zhentu Poisoning (Ibis Poison)**
Take Sanleng (Fen Shuang, 粉霜/Arsenic Trioxide) 3 ge, mix with 3 sheng of water, and drink. If the jaw is clenched, force it open with a bamboo tube and灌 (irrigate/pour) the medicine in.
**For Poisoning by She Wang (She Du, 射罔/Aconite-type Poison)**
Indigo juice, soybeans, pig blood, and dog blood can all detoxify this.
**For Poisoning by Langdu (Wolf Poison)**
Detoxify with Indigo juice.
**For Poisoning by Wild Wolf Kui (Malva-type Poison)**
Detoxify with Malvae Radix juice.
**For Poisoning by Lichuan (Veratrum)**
Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄) and scallion juice can both detoxify this.
**For Poisoning by Zhizhu (Rhododendron/Mountain Azalea)**
Detoxify with Gardenia juice.
**For Poisoning by Badou (Croton Seed)**
Coptis, bean leaf juice, and soybean juice can all detoxify this.
**For Poisoning by Xionghuang (Realgar)**
Detoxify with Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix (Fangji, 防己) juice.
**For Poisoning by Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper) and Wugong (Centipede)**
Both poisons can be resolved by mulberry juice or boiled mulberry root juice.
**For Poisoning with Mingfan (Alum)**
Detoxify with soybean juice.
**For Poisoning with Yuanhua (Genkwa Flos)**
Periplocae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), Licorice (Gancao, 甘草), and Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi, 桂) can all detoxify this.
**For Poisoning by Banxia (Pinellia Tuber)**
Fresh Ginger Juice (Shengjiang Zhi, 生姜汁) and dried ginger (Ganjiang, 干姜) can both detoxify this.
**For Poisoning by Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) and Chutou (Aconite)**
Soybean juice and Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi, 远志) juice can both detoxify this.
**For Poisoning by Xingren (Apricot Seed)**
Detoxify with Indigo seed juice.
**For Death from Eating Gold Foil**
Take half a sheng of chicken manure, leach with water to obtain one sheng of liquid, and drink. Take three times a day.
Another formula: Swallow two liang of Mercury (Shuiyin, 水银); it will wrap around the gold and expel it. One liang is sufficient for smaller amounts.
Yao states: Take one liang per dose, administered three times. Support the patient in a sitting position while administering; life returns once it enters the stomach.
Another formula: Duck blood and chicken eggs can also detoxify this.
**A Single Formula to Resolve Multiple Toxins**
Take Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), cut into pieces, and boil strongly. Drink plenty of the juice and consume plenty of onion mucus; this is beneficial.
Another formula: Boil soybeans until boiling vigorously, and drink plenty of the juice. If soybeans are unavailable, fermented soybeans (Chidou, 豆豉) are also good.
Another formula: Indigo plant (Lanqing, 蓝青) and Indigo seeds (Lanzi, 蓝子) can generally resolve various toxins; keep them in reserve regularly.
Another formula: Boil Shepherd's Purse (Jicai, 荠菜) until thick, and drink one to two sheng. This is a secret formula. If suddenly unable to boil it, chew it raw or make it into powder and take it. Among all antidotes, this herb is effective for all drug poisonings.
Another formula: When boiling this herbal juice for detoxification, do not drink it hot, as heat exacerbates most toxins. It is best to let it cool slightly before drinking.
Governor Xi Bian stated that the Li people in Lingnan acquire their poisons through food. Symptoms are not immediately apparent but gradually lead to loss of appetite, abdominal distension, back stiffness and irritability, and chills resembling malaria.
If slight discomfort is felt, urgently hold a piece of silver in the mouth. Overnight, if the silver changes color, it indicates poison. Silver turning blue/green indicates "Blue Medicine" (likely arsenic compounds); yellow/red indicates "KT Medicine." If prolonged, the eyes may turn blue/green or yellow/red. The Li people who possess antidotes hide their knowledge, claiming they have "Three Hundred Ox Medicine" or "Three Hundred Taels of Silver Medicine." Having served long-term and being close to tribal leaders, I know these are common drugs misidentified by the Li people who lack knowledge of Materia Medica. Their formulas are as follows:
**Initial Treatment for Li People's Poison**
First, stabilize the condition.
Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang, 生姜) 4 liang, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) 3 liang (roasted), cut into pieces. Boil in six sheng of water until two sheng remain. Take in three doses in the morning. Afterward, seek specific antidotal treatment.
**Antidotal Formulas**
**Formula 1:**
Polygoni Cuspidati Rhizoma et Radix (Changshan, 常山) 4 liang (cut), White Salt (Baigan, 白盐) 4 qian. Soak in one dou (approx. 10 liters) of water overnight, specifically on the last day of the lunar month. On the first day of the new moon, at the fifth watch (3-5 AM), boil in an earthen pot. Do not allow servants, chickens, or dogs to see this process. Boil until two sheng remain. Divide into two morning doses. Shortly after ingestion, the patient will vomit; collect the vomitus in a copper vessel. If the vomitus is blue-green and does not break when lifted five chi with a stick, the poison is not fully expelled; administer another dose after two days. Governor Xi Bian contracted this poison after drinking wine and realized it over a month later. Tribal Leader Liang Fen treated him with local Changshan, calling it "One Hundred Ox Medicine." He recovered. For twenty days post-recovery, strictly avoid toxic foods and eat only cooked rice. Nine people were cured in total using this method.
**Formula 2:**
Yellow Vine (Huangteng, 黄藤) 10 liang, available throughout Lingnan. Cut into pieces, boil in one dou of water until two sheng remain. Divide into three doses. After ingestion, internal poison dissipates. If exposed to Fangji-type Li poison, regular consumption of this vine prevents natural poisoning from manifesting. Xi Yun states that regular use promotes urination and has cured several people.
**Formula 3:**
Dulin Vine (Dulin Teng, 都淋藤) 10 liang, available throughout Lingnan, known to locals, called "Three Hundred Taels of Silver" by the Li. Leaves are slender; vines are about three chi long. Use fresh, cut vines. Boil in one dou of water with two sheng of wine until three sheng remain. Divide into three doses. After ingestion, poison is excreted via urine. Avoid toxic foods for ten days. If not cured, repeat the dose for recovery.
**Formula 4:**
Dried Indigo Fruit (Gan Lan Shi, 干蓝实) 4 liang, White Flower Vine (Baihua Teng, 白花藤) 4 liang (best sourced from [Specific] Prefecture; avoid those growing with Yege). Cut into pieces. Boil in seven sheng of water and one sheng of wine until half a sheng remains. Take on an empty stomach in one dose. Mild irritability is normal. Alternatively, powder single dried Indigo and take in one dose; this also cures.
**Treatment for Internal Abdominal Toxins**
Dulin Vine (Dulin Teng, 都淋藤) 2 liang, cut into three-cun pieces and finely chopped. Place in three sheng of wine in a clay jar, seal tightly. Roast around the jar with chaff fire until three boils occur. Cool, remove, and take warm. Maintain a wine-colored appearance; no dietary restrictions apply. Highly effective.
**If Accidentally Consuming Li Food**
First, take one cun of roasted Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), chew thoroughly, and swallow. If poison was ingested, vomiting will occur, confirming poisoning. Treat according to previous methods. Governor Xi Bian advises carrying ten slices of Gancao in a pouch for prevention.
**Supplementary Formulas**
**From *Shengjin Fang* (Golden Victory Formula):** Treats all toxins.
Powder Alum (Danzi Fan, 胆子矾). Make pills the size of a chestnut using glutinous rice paste, coat with Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂). Keep nourished with Cinnabar. Dissolve one pill in cold water and take; immediate cure.
**From *Jingyan Fang* (Experience Formula):** *Rusheng San* (Like-Saint Powder) for resolving upward-rising drug toxicity.
Honeycomb of Vespa (Lufengfang, 露蜂房) and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) in equal parts. Stir-fry with bran until yellow, remove bran, and powder. Decoct in two bowls of water until reduced to 0.8 bowl. Take warm just before bed. Evil matter will be discharged the next day.
**From *Waitai Miyao*:** Treats conditions after mineral drug intake, such as fever with trismus, preference for lying on cold ground, and inability to eat hot noodles or alcohol.
Acanthopanacis Cortex (Wujia Pi, 五加皮) 2 liang. Boil in four sheng of water until 2.5 sheng remain. Take when mineral toxicity flares. Repeat if unstable.
**Sun Simiao’s Commentary:** Regarding poisoning by Aconite and Croton.
The claim that Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) settles the abdomen immediately, or that Soybeans (Dadou, 大豆) resolve all drug poisons, was tested but proved ineffective. Therefore, Gancao was added to create *Gandou Tang* (Sweet Bean Decoction), which acts faster.
**From *Meishi Fang*:** Closed-mouth Sichuan Pepper (Shujiao, 蜀椒) is toxic. Accidental ingestion causes near-asphyxiation, white froth, and cold body.
Urgently decoct Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi, 桂) juice and take. Drink one to two sheng of cold water. If sudden vomiting of fluid occurs, decoct strong Fermented Soybean (Chidou, 豉) juice and take.
**From *Shenghui Fang*:** For sudden Qi stagnation due to Sulfur.
Take one he of Sheep Blood (Yangxue, 羊血); effective.
Another formula: For She Wang poison in meat and *Loupou* (leftover bread) poison.
Powder Concha Meretricis (Beizi, 贝子), mix with water, take half qian; effective. Also applicable for noodle poison.
**From *Chu Yushi Fang*:** Secret effective formula for drug toxicity.
Crotonis Fructus (Badou, 巴豆) peeled without oil, and Natrii Sulfas (Mayaxiao, 马牙硝) in equal parts. Grind into a paste. Dissolve an amount the size of a bullet in cold water and take; cured.
