Ge's Formula: Take a small amount of honey and hold it in the mouth; the obstruction will fall immediately.
Another formula: Take saliva foam from an old cow, about the size of a jujube pit, place it in water, and drink it. One will never suffer from dysphagia again for life.
Supplementary Formulas
*Waitai Miyao*, treating dysphagia.
Antelope horn shavings, quantity as needed, ground into powder. Administer one *cun* bi (square-inch spoonful) with warm water. Alternatively, rub the horn on the site of dysphagia; this is effective.
*Shiyi Xinjing*, treating sudden food impaction.
Use 1 liang of Chenpi (dried tangerine peel), soak in hot water to remove the white pith, dry by baking, and grind into powder. Decoct with one large cup of water until half remains, and take hot.
*Shenghui Fang*, treating Ge Qi (obstruction in the diaphragm/chest), throat blockage, and inability to swallow food or drink.
Use fine bran from the beak of a rice pounder (*dui zui*), mix with honey to form pills the size of a bullet. At non-meal times, hold one pill in the mouth and swallow saliva.
*Guang Wuxing Ji* records: During the Yonghui era, a monk in Jiangzhou suffered from dysphagia and could not eat. He told his disciples, "After I die, you may open my chest and throat."
He asked them to see what was inside. After speaking, he died. The disciples followed his instructions. Upon opening the chest, they found an object. It resembled a fish with two heads and was covered in fleshy scales throughout its body. The disciples placed it in a vessel, where it jumped incessantly. They tested various flavors, but it dissolved completely. At that time, it was mid-summer, and indigo plants were commonly used to make dye. A monk put some indigo powder into the vessel. The creature then ran around inside the vessel and soon turned into water.
Fish bone impaction.
Place the fish bone on the head; recovery is immediate. The text below states that coughing (*qing*) will cause it to come out.
Another formula: Chew Xiaobai (Allium macrostemon / small-root garlic) thoroughly until soft. Tie a string around the middle, hold the end of the string, and swallow the Xiaobai until it reaches the impacted area. Pull the string, and the bone should come out with it.
Treatment for bone impaction.
Take the remaining bone fragment, hold it in both hands, and repeatedly throw it behind your back; the bone will emerge immediately.
Formula for miscellaneous foreign body impaction.
Untie the belt, look down towards the lower part of the body; if it does not go down, it will come out.
Another formula: Use high-quality honey, scoop it up with a spoon, and swallow it slowly to facilitate descent.
Formula for fish bone stuck in the throat when other methods fail.
Take Yitang (maltose), form into a pill the size of a chicken egg yolk, and swallow. If it does not pass, swallow another, gradually increasing the size of the pill until effective.
Supplementary Formulas
*Doumen Fang*, treating bone impaction.
Grind deer horn into powder, hold in the mouth, and swallow with saliva; this is excellent.
*Waitai Miyao*, treating impaction.
Grind tiger bone into powder, administer one *cun* bi (square-inch spoonful) with water.
Another formula: Swallow the brain of a mole (*Lougu*). This also treats splinters that cannot be removed; apply externally, and the splinter will emerge.
Another formula: Verbally utter the name of the cormorant ("Lu E"), and the object will descend.
Also from *Gujin Luyan*, treating fish bone transverse in the throat, not coming out after six or seven days. Take carp scale skin, burn together into ash/shavings, and administer with water. The bone will come out; if not, take another dose.
*Shengjin Fang*, treating all types of bone impaction in children and adults, or bamboo/wood splinters piercing the throat without descending.
In the twelfth lunar month, take gallbladders of mandarin fish (*Guiyu*), hang them under the north eaves to dry. Whenever there is a fish bone impaction, take an amount the size of a soap nut, decoct with wine until melted, and sip warm.
If vomiting occurs, the bone will come out along with the stubborn phlegm. If no vomiting occurs, drink more warm wine. Vomiting is the desired outcome; the amount of wine should be adjusted according to individual tolerance. If it has not come out, decoct another piece; nothing will fail to come out. This medicine works for any foreign body lodged in the viscera. For those suffering from long-term pain, yellow complexion, and severe emaciation due to impaction, taking this will cause expulsion. If mandarin fish cannot be obtained suddenly, Li fish, Cao fish, or crucian carp are all acceptable. Collect them in the twelfth lunar month for best results.
