Hua Tuo's Forbidden Prescription.
Instruct the patient to use their own two fingers to pry open the affected eye. Recite a spell into the void, saying: "Pi pi (onomatopoeia), the house is narrow and cannot accommodate a guest who stays overnight; please leave immediately."
At the end of the Shanghan Fang (Treatise on Cold Damage Prescriptions), there is also an eye prescription from Yao's medical texts. For cold tears flowing from the eyes, redness, and itching, use a decoction prepared with milk.
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) 3 fen, Prunus persica kernel or specific herb Ruiren 2 fen, Zingiberis Rhizoma Exsiccatum (Ganjiang) 4 fen. Soak in one sheng of milk overnight, then simmer gently over low heat until three ge of liquid remain. Strain the dregs. Take particles the size of rice grains and apply externally to the affected area.
Prescription for Eye Injury and Rupture.
Apply Niu Xuan twice daily, avoid wind exposure. Even if the cornea (black pupil) is ruptured, it will heal.
Supplementary Prescriptions
Fan Zhu's Prescription, primarily for tearing, inability to open the eyes, and severe stinging pain.
Take salt the size of a soybean, place it in the eye. When a slight tingling sensation occurs, remove the salt. Wash the eyes several times with cold water until healed.
Bo Ji Fang (Universal Relief Formulas), treating wind-toxin attacking upward, causing eyelid swelling, itching, and astringency, unbearable pain, or redness and ulceration of upper and lower eyelids, floating nebulae, and caruncle tissue invading the cornea. Shenxiao Qufeng San (Divine Efficacy Wind-Expelling Powder): Bletillae Rhizoma (Wubeizi) 1 liang, Viticis Fructus (Manjingzi) 1.5 liang. Pound together into powder. Take 2 qian per dose with two zhan of water, decoct in a copper or stone vessel until one zhan remains. Clarify the dregs. Rinse the eyes while hot. Retain the dregs for two more doses, decocting again as before for rinsing. This greatly brightens the eyes and removes astringency and itching.
Jianyao Jizhong (Brief and Effective Aid to the Masses), treating Liver deficiency, eyeball pain, continuous cold tears, meridian pain, photophobia, and aversion to sunlight. Bugan San (Liver-Nourishing Powder): Prunellae Spica (Xiakucao) 0.5 liang, Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfuzi) 1 liang. Grind together into powder. Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with wax tea, at any time.
Shenghui Fang (Sage's Grace Formulas), treating acute eye itching, redness, and astringency. Inject bile from a dog into the eyes.
Another prescription, treating wind-induced red eyes.
Take 10 earthworms (Dilong), dry them by roasting, grind into powder. Before sleep, mix with cold tea and take 2 qian bi.
Another prescription, treating heat toxin from cold damage attacking the eyes, resulting in white nebulae.
Use Sepiae Endoconcha (Wouyu Gu) 2 liang, removing the outer membrane. Pound into powder, add a small amount of Borneolum Syntheticum (Longnao/Bingpian), and grind finely. Apply a small amount to the eyes 3-4 times daily.
Another prescription, treating chronic internal cataracts.
Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shu Dihuang), Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong) in equal parts. Grind into powder, form pills with honey the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Repeated administration yields effective results.
Many prescriptions for eye diseases use Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian). However, Sheep Liver Pills are particularly remarkable.
Take 1 da liang of Coptidis Rhizoma powder and one whole liver from a white lamb, removing the membrane. Grind together extremely finely in a mortar. Roll into pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Swallow 14 pills with warm grain water before each meal. Complete five courses for a cure. This treats all types of eye diseases, including nebulae, blindness (Qingmang), etc. Avoid pork and cold water. Liu Yuxi stated that a man named Cui Chengyuan once saved a prisoner sentenced to death due to official duties. Years later, that prisoner died by suicide. One day, Cui Chengyuan suffered from internal cataracts and lost his sight. Over a year later, sighing in the middle of the night, he heard rustling sounds on the steps. Asking who it was, the voice replied, "I am the prisoner you once saved, here to repay your kindness." He then received this prescription and passed away. Cui Chengyuan prepared and took the medicine according to this method, and within a few months, his sight was restored. Thus, this prescription was transmitted to the world.
Another prescription, Jin Yi Jia Xi Yan Tang (Modern Nebula Family Eye-Washing Decoction).
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), and Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) in equal parts. Finely chop. Decoct strongly in snow water or sweet water. Wash the eyes while hot; reheat when cool.
This is highly beneficial for the eyes, especially for wind-toxin, red eyes, and floral nebulae. The theory states that all eye diseases result from blood vessel stagnation. Therefore, blood-invigorating herbs combined with Coptidis Rhizoma are used. Blood flows when heated, hence the hot wash. Users report divine efficacy.
Another prescription, treating nyctalopia (night blindness) regardless of duration.
Use Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu) 2 liang, pound and sieve into a powder. Take 1 qian per dose at any time. Take one good lamb liver, slice it open with a bamboo knife, sprinkle the powder inside. Tie tightly with hemp rope. Cook in one zhan of millet washing water until done. The patient should first fumigate the eyes with the steam. Once the medicinal vapor dissipates, eat the liver. Jianyao Jizhong also treats pediatric nyctalopia.
Meishi Fang, treating dim vision where objects cannot be seen at dusk.
Slice green sheep liver and eat it with light vinegar. Boiling is also good.
Another prescription, treating eyes protruding spontaneously by one or two cun.
Flush the eyes with freshly drawn water, changing the water frequently. The eyes will naturally return to their sockets.
Cui Yuanliang's Haishang Fang records three names: one is Xiguo Cao, another is Bilengjia, and the third is Rubus chingii fruit (Fupenzi). It treats dim vision, unceasing cold tears, Qingmang (blindness), and epidemic dim vision. Take Xiguo Cao, sun-dry it, and pound until very soft. Wrap thinly in cotton. Soak in male human milk. After the time it takes to walk eight or nine li, apply drops to the eyes. Lie supine immediately. Within three to four days, vision will be as clear as in youth. Avoid alcohol, oil, and wheat products.
Qianjin Fang, treating black flower nebulae, astringency, and pain in children's eyes.
Take one liang of shell teeth, burn to ash, grind like flour. Add a little Borneolum Syntheticum (Longnao). Apply to the eyes. Excellent.
Another prescription, for regular use to brighten eyes and improve distant vision.
Sesamum indicum seed (Huma) one dan. Steam thirty times, grind into powder. Take with wine, one sheng daily.
Another prescription, ancient formula for brightening eyes and darkening hair. Soak Sophora japonica seeds (Huai Zi) in pig gallbladder, dry in shade for one hundred days. Swallow one pill after meals. In ten days, the body feels light; in thirty days, white hair turns black; within one hundred days, spiritual clarity is achieved. Sun Simiao's Dietary Taboos treat eye nebulae. Take Magnsii Sulfas (Mangxiao) one da liang, place in a copper vessel, refine over high fire. Cool down, sift through fine raw silk, and apply to the corner of the eye once nightly before bed. Excellent.
Jingyan Fang, for removing nebulae and brightening eyes: Bailong San (White Dragon Powder).
Take pure Ma Ya Xiao (Saltpeter), wrap in thick paper, press firmly. Keep against the skin in the chest for one hundred and twenty days. Remove, grind to powder, add a little Borneolum Syntheticum (Longnao), and grind fine. Regardless of how long the condition has persisted, if nebulae membranes grow inside the eye causing gradual dimness and blurred distance vision, as long as the pupil is not broken or scattered, it can be cured. Apply about two rice grains of powder to the eye each time.
Another prescription, treating internal and external cataracts.
Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu) 4 liang. Soak in rice water for seven days, changing water daily. Scrape off the black skin, cut finely. Add one liang of Green Salt (Qingyan), stir-fry together until yellow. Remove and discard the salt. Ephedrae Herba (Muzei) 2 liang. Soak in urine from an uncircumcised boy overnight, rinse with water, dry by baking. Pound together into powder. Take 1 qian bi mixed with food and vegetables at any time. Very effective.
Jingyan Houfang, treating dim vision due to deficiency and exhaustion.
Collect Vitex trifolia flowers (Manjinghua) in March, dry in shade, grind to powder. Mix with well water and take 2 qian bi on an empty stomach. Long-term use promotes longevity and allows reading at night.
Waitai Miyao, treating eye nebulae and caruncles/polyps.
Use the whitest Alum (Fanshi). Place a grain-sized amount on the nebula or polyp. Cold tears will flow; wipe with cotton. Continue until foul discharge ceases. The disease decreases daily, the nebula thins and disappears, leading to recovery. Only true, pure white Alum should be used.
Another Liver-Nourishing Powder, treating thirty years of blindness.
Tribuli Fructus (Jili Zi), collected on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, dried in shade, pounded into powder. Take one fang cun bi with water after meals.
Another treatment for blindness.
One pig gallbladder. Simmer gently over low heat. Form pills the size of a millet grain. Insert into the eye. Wait for the time it takes to eat a meal. Good.
Another prescription, treating heavy nebulae.
Dry the white membrane of a pig gallbladder in the sun. Shape into small ropes the thickness of a hairpin shaft. Burn to ash. While cool, apply the ash to the nebula. Three to five applications will cure it.
Another prescription, for lightening the body, boosting Qi, and brightening eyes.
Brassica rapa seed (Wujingzi) one sheng. Boil in nine sheng of water until the liquid is exhausted. Dry in the sun. Repeat this process three times. Grind into powder. Take one fang cun bi with water, three times daily.
Doumen Fang, treating fire eyes.
Burn Mugwort (Ai) until smoke rises. Cover with a bowl. When soot accumulates on the bowl, remove it. Dissolve the soot in warm water and wash the fire eyes. Immediate cure. Adding Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) is excellent.
Guangli Fang, treating eye trauma with polyp protrusion.
Seven raw Almond kernels (Xingren). Peel, chew finely, spit into the palm while still warm. Wrap the tip of a tendon/muscle fiber in cotton, dip into the mixture, and apply to the polyp. Four or five applications will cure it.
Yaoxing Lun states.
On an empty stomach, brush teeth with salt. Spit into water after a short while. Wash the eyes with this water. Allows seeing small characters at night. Good.
Gu Han's Sister-in-Law Lost Sight.
Gu Han served medicine and food to his sister-in-law without wearing a hat or eating himself. His sister-in-law suffered from eye disease requiring Snake Gallbladder (Ranshe Dan). Gu Han sought it everywhere but could not find it. A young boy gave Gu Han a box. Upon opening, it contained Snake Gallbladder.
The boy left the door and transformed into a blue bird, flying away. The sister-in-law's eyes were subsequently cured.
