Postpartum sweating during sleep, which stops upon waking. It is like a thief stealing while people are asleep, hence called "night sweats" (Dao Han), which differs from spontaneous sweating (Zi Han) and requires different treatment. Blood-invigorating or blood-nourishing herbs should be used concurrently; however, Danggui Dahuang Tang (Angelica Sinensis and Rhubarb Decoction) is not the appropriate formula for postpartum night sweats.
Zhihan San (Sweat-Stop Powder) treats postpartum night sweats.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 2 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 qian), Mahuang Gen (Ephedrae Radix et Rhizoma, 1.5 qian), Huai Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 3 qian), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 0.5 qian, stir-fried with wine), Fu Xiao Mai (Tritici Fructus Levius, a pinch).
Another prescription: Mu Li (Ostreae Concha), ground into fine powder; stir-fry wheat flour until yellow, grind into powder. Place in a silk bag and apply externally by dusting.
Generally, postpartoral dryness of the mouth and throat with thirst, or accompanied by difficult urination (Xiao Bian Bu Li), results from blood loss during childbirth or excessive sweating, leading to a deficiency of fluids derived from food and drink. Daily consumption of food and drink is received by the Stomach (Wei), dispersed by the Spleen (Pi) and Lungs (Fei); the finest clear qi becomes Jin Ye (Body Fluids). This qi connects to the Heart (Xin), receives the color of Fire, and transforms into Blood, descending to the Bladder (Pang Guang) to become urine. When childbirth causes blood loss, combined with excessive sweating and fatigue damaging the Spleen, which fails to transport fluids for the Stomach, the transformative Qi does not move, and the draining/disseminating function fails. Consequently, there is no fluid circulation above, causing dry throat and thirst; below, Qi does not ascend, leading to closure of the Stomach and Kidney (Shen). The treatment must assist the Spleen, benefit Qi, and raise/nourish Blood and Qi. Then, Qi transformation circulates, Yang ascends and Yin descends; water enters the meridians to become blood and fluids, grain enters the stomach to nourish Qi and promote pulse flow, naturally replenishing fluids and regulating bowel movements. If one mistakes dry throat and mouth for Fire and uses Qin Lian Zhi Bai (Scutellaria, Coptis, Gardenia, Phellodendron) to descend it; or if one mistakes difficult/obstructed urination for Water stagnation and uses Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) to unblock it, both are incorrect. One must warm and tonify due to labor-induced damage, moisten and promote movement due to dryness, measure the condition, and treat accordingly, thus avoiding errors.
Shengjin Zhike Yishui Yin (Fluid-Generating, Thirst-Quenching, Water-Benefiting Drink): Add Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen, 1 qian) according to need.
Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 1 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 3 qian), Huai Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix, 3 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 3 qian), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus, 10 grains), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 0.8 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.4 qian), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 0.4 qian), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 1 qian).
If sweating is excessive, add Mahuang Gen (Ephedrae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, 1 qian), Fu Xiao Mai (Tritici Fructus Levius, a pinch). If large and small bowels have been obstructed for many days, add Rou Cong Rong (Cistanches Herba, 1.5 qian). If thirst is severe, use Shengmai San (Generate the Pulse Powder) as tea without hesitation.
Shengjin Yeye Tang (Fluid-Generating and Body Fluid-Benefiting Decoction) treats postpartum weakness, thirst with shortness of breath, excessive sweating with internal vexation, and failure to generate body fluids.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 1 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 1 qian), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 3 pieces), Zhu Ye (Bambusae Folium, 30 slices), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 qian), Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthis Radix, 3 qian), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Herba, 3 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 qian; if intense heat and unquenchable thirst persist, add Lu Gen).
Decoct in water; extremely effective.
