Any sweating occurring during childbirth is caused by labor damaging the Spleen, fright injuring the Heart, and fear damaging the Kidney. The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: When the body suffers from excessive toil, sweat originates from the Spleen; when essence is depleted due to fright, sweat originates from the Heart; when the Stomach Qi is affected by fear, sweat originates from the Kidney. Parturient women often suffer from sweating due to a combination of these three factors. There is no need to immediately administer astringent herbs to stop sweating; once the Spirit (Shen) is calm, the sweating will cease naturally. If pain is caused by blood stasis (blood clots), it is not advisable to abruptly add Bai Shao (White Peony Root) or Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome). It is appropriate to take Shenghua Tang (Life Return Decoction) for two or three doses until the pain from blood stasis subsides, followed immediately by Jia Shen Shenghua Tang (Shenghua Tang with Ginseng) to treat deficiency-type sweating. If the woman is extremely fatigued after delivery and experiences continuous sweating (Ji Ran Han Chu), accompanied by signs of collapse in complexion and form, this is "Wang Yang Tuo Han" (Collapse of Yang leading to profuse sweating). In such cases, one should adapt the treatment by continuously administering Jia Shen Shenghua Tang with doubled dosage of Ren Shen (Ginseng) to rescue the critical condition, without being constrained by concerns over blood stasis pain. Sweat is the fluid of the Heart; within the body it becomes Blood, and outside the body it manifests as Sweat. After significant blood loss during childbirth, excessive sweating occurs because fright and labor have injured the Heart and depleted Shen, failing to secure the fluids. Treatment should focus on strengthening the Spleen and Stomach to assist in transforming grain essence back to the Spleen, tonifying Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi to guide Blood back to its source, irrigating the four extremities, and preventing fluids from leaking out abnormally as sweat. Although difficult conditions may be divided into spontaneous sweating and night sweats, Dang Gui Da Huang Tang (Angelica Sinensis and Rhubarb Decoction) cannot be used to treat night sweats postpartum. Both conditions are suitable for treatment with Jia Shen Shenghua Tang and Jia Wei Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Modified Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction). If heavy doses of Ginseng are administered but sweating persists, or if sweating is limited only to the head and does not extend to the waist and feet, this indicates a critical condition.
Mahuang Gen Tang (Ephedra Root Decoction) treats persistent postpartum deficiency sweating. Within three days, if blood stasis has not cleared, do not add Bai Shao or Bai Zhu.
Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 1.5 qian) Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 qian) Mahuang Gen (Ephedrae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian) Fen Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle, 0.5 qian) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 2 qian) Mu Li (Ostreae Concha, 0.5 qian) Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 0.5 qian) Fu Xiao Mai (Tritici Levis Fructus, a pinch) Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 qian).
If blood stasis pain does not worsen, it is because Bai Shao and Bai Zhu are tonifying but lack moving properties. For deficiency collapse with profuse sweating and cold hands and feet, add one piece of Shu Fu Zi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix) and 0.4 qian of Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma). For thirst, add 1 qian of Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) and ten grains of Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus). If there is no blood stasis pain, add 3 qian of Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata). For aversion to wind and cold, add 0.5 qian of Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) and 0.5 qian of Gui Zhi. For obese, fair-skinned women with postpartum sweating, add one wine-cup of Zhu Li (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia Succus) and half a spoonful of Jiang Zhi (Zingiberis Recens Juice) to clear Phlegm-Heat.
Take at night: Ba Wei Di Huang Wan (Eight-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill).
Shan Yu Rou (Corni Fructus), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Huai Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix).
Grind equal parts into fine powder, and make pills with honey.
Persistent postpartum deficiency sweating is caused by the loss of Yin Blood during childbirth, leading to an excess of Yang Qi. The *Huangdi Neijing* states: When Yang acts upon Yin, sweating occurs. Consequently, encountering Wind pathogen may transform the condition into other diseases.
