Postpartum headache: In the human body, Qi belongs to Yang, and Blood belongs to Yin. When Yin and Yang are harmonious and flowing smoothly, there is no disease. After childbirth, excessive blood loss causes a severe deficiency of Yin Qi. Without a foundation for attachment, Yang Qi floats upward. The head is the convergence point of all Yang meridians; when pathogenic factors invade the head, headache occurs. By tonifying Yin and Blood, Yang Qi becomes sufficient, and the illness naturally ceases. Xiong Gui Tang (Safflower and Angelica Decoction) is the primary prescription.
Chuanxiong Rhizoma (San Qian / 3 qian) Danggui Radix (Liu Qian / 6 qian, washed with wine) Congbai Bulbus Allii Cepae (Wu Qian / 5 qian) Lianxu Stamen Nelumbinis Shuxu Herba Shengjiang Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens
Decoct in water and take orally.
In other cases, retained blood (stasis) lingers in the uterus. The Jueyin Liver Meridian ascends through the vertex; thus, it can also cause pain. To the previous decoction, add Sheng Puhuang Pollen Typhae (Er Qian / 2 qian) and Chao Heidou Semen Sojae Preparatum (Yi He / 1 he). Decoct using half wine and half water.
Postpartum abdominal distension and fullness: This is caused by retained blood scattering into the Spleen and Stomach. When the Spleen is affected, it fails to transform and transport fluids, resulting in abdominal distension. There are also cases of abdominal distension due to food stagnation, which can be distinguished by pulse diagnosis. If caused by blood stasis, the pulse is knotted and choppy, and there is no aversion to food. If caused by food stagnation, the pulse is wiry and slippery, accompanied by an aversion to food. Ping Wei San (Calm the Stomach Powder) with modifications is the primary prescription.
Cangzhu Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (soaked in rice wash water, peeled, stir-fried) Houpo Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis (stir-fried with ginger juice) Chenpi Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Xiangfu Rhizoma Cyperi Racemosi (stir-fried with vinegar) Renshen Radix Ginseng (each Er Qian / 2 qian) Shenqu Mass Medicamentosa Fermentata (Yi Qian / 1 qian, stir-fried) Shengjiang Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Wu Fen / 0.5 qian, stir-fried)
For food injury, add Shanzha Fructus Crataegi and Maiya Fructus Hordei Germinatus. Abdominal distension is invariably accompanied by asthma/wheezing; Renshen Dingchuan Tang (Ginseng Asthma-Calming Decoction) is the primary prescription.

Postpartum cough: The Lung governs Qi. Qi is active and serves to nourish the skin and hair and consolidate the Couli (skin pores and interstitial spaces). Postpartum Qi deficiency leads to insufficient nourishment of the skin and hair and lax Couli. The Lung contracts Wind-Cold, resulting in cough. Symptoms include fever, aversion to cold, nasal congestion, and heavy voice. Xuan Fu Hua Tang (Inula Flower Decoction) is the primary prescription.
