Whenever during pregnancy there is puffy swelling of the face and eyes, with water qi retained in the four limbs, it is called Zi Zhong (submersion edema). This is generally caused by Spleen-Stomach deficiency. It is advisable to take Quansheng Baizhu San (Complete Life Atractylodes Powder) or Liyu Tang (Carp Decoction).

For each dose of 4 qian of herbs, add seven slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma), put into the fish broth, decoct and take orally. Continue until cured.
Mr. Tang said: Zi Zhong (submersion edema) often occurs at five or six months of pregnancy. If the abdomen becomes distended and high, surpassing the heart and chest, with rebellious Qi and discomfort, this is caused by water accumulation within the fetus. If not treated early, it will inevitably lead to physiological disabilities in the newborn, endangering both mother and child. It is common to decoct and eat carp congee regularly.
Whenever during pregnancy there is edema of the legs and knees, fluid exuding from the dorsum of the feet and toes, with shortness of breath and chest fullness, this is caused by Spleen deficiency transforming blood into water dampness. It is called Zi Man (excessive amniotic fluid), also known as Zi Qi (fetal Qi disorder). It is advisable to take Jiawei Tianxianteng San (Modified Aristolochia Vine Powder). If the Spleen Qi weakness is severe, it is advisable to take Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction).
Jiawei Tianxianteng San (Modified Aristolochia Vine Powder)
Tianxianteng (Aristolochiae Manshuriensis Caulis) (washed, lightly stir-fried, 6 fen) Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus, 1 qian) Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma, 6 fen) Zisu (Perillae Folium) Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 4 fen) Wuyao (Linderae Radix, 7 fen) Gancao (Licorice Root, 3 fen)

Alternatively, add Chuanjiaomu (Zanthoxyli Semen, 1 qian); Jing Cheqian (Plantaginis Semen, 1 qian) is even better. Decoct in water and take orally.
Note: During the seventh or eighth month of pregnancy, edema of both feet is due to the downward flow of placental fluid and dampness. Mild swelling is called Zhou Jiao (wrinkled feet). Delivery is easy. If the swelling is severe, or if yellow fluid exudes, only then should Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) be taken.
